    For those who cannot get fresh daikon, the best substitute is white turnip.

    I recommend using small red radishes if you can't find daikon, because daikon is a large form of radish itself so the flavour and crunchy texture are very similar. The only difference between daikon and red radishes is in the flavour, daikon is a mild radish and red radishes are a bit hotter. But all you need to do is use less chopped chilli or leave it out altogether. And the other thing you need to do is peel the red radishes which are white underneath, just like daikon, but they're both nice and crunchy. I definitely wouldn't recommend using turnip instead of daikon as they're not similar in any way other than their colour! It would be like using raw potato instead of daikon just because they're both white! I can't imagine eating raw turnip but it's up to you of course.

      radish heat is the same as mustard and horseradish, not the scoville heat that the chili would give you.

    You do seem to give us excellent recipes! Do you use a chicken liver pate or one using chicken thighs or breasts? Recipes vary.

      Me too. They're so yummy. I usually buy them from my local Vietnamese bakery where they use roast pork instead of chicken, but I've never had one with pate on it, so I'm definitely going to try this recipe, I love chicken liver pate.

    Love these pickled veg - are we getting a bread recipe too? That's the most important part & I don't have any Viet bakers near where I live! :(

      Hi, all you need to do is go to any decent bakery and buy some long white rolls. When you look at the recipe you'll see that Nagi says to just crisp up the rolls in your oven for a few minutes, if your rolls aren't crisp enough already. She also says: don't use sour dough rolls or anything fancy because they're too chewy for Banh Mi Rolls. I live in Melbourne where we have a big Vietnamese population and I usually buy my Banh Mi Rolls from my local Vietnamese bakery, where they make them while you wait. I really recommend making these yummy rolls - they're the best! Love from Amanda Jones in Melbourne, Australia ❤️

      Not worth making your own. Buy a crusty French baguette (bread stick) and cut to size.

      @@amandajones6481 All my decent local bakeries are German or French in style. Their bread is good but WAY too dense for a good Banh Mi. When I lived in Sydney I could rely on finding a good Vietnamese baker but not the case at all since I moved to London.

      @@InnuendoXP Oh yes, good point. Not all baguettes are alike. The cheapo $1.50 version I can buy at my local supermarket has served me well as a substitute. I cut it open, scrape out some of the dough inside, crisp it up in the oven or airfryer - et voilà: poor man's banh mi roll. 😁

      Where are you from? There's no MSG in that sauce in Australia. But if you like you could just use soy sauce.
