Good stuff as always! My question - What is output impedance (microphone specification) and what am I looking for when I read this on a microphone spec sheet?
Working in audio post production, I find it’s more useful if people pay attention to good nominal levels and good mic placement while avoiding distortion and air movement hits from wind and breath than worrying about a few recording low frequency artifacts… LF is often the easiest thing to remove from dialog either with editing or EQ. It’s also crazy that on set people do not isolate away from on set noise sources like lighting box hum and air conditioning, etc. You could dampen the noise source, or at least mic the actor to entirely reject the background noise. A widely ignored principal with less experienced crew.
What is the biggest sound f-up you've made on set that you were still able to fix in post, and how did you fix it? What did you do afterwards to prevent yourselves from screwing up again?
How do I deal with selfnoise from my Tascam DR60 II when using either my Lavalier or NTG-3? And how can I manage it when I want to test and compare mics on my TH-cam channel? 😊 Thanks for great videos👍
Also can you do video how get good dialog recording using just deity on cam mic, how set it up, recording, & using phone apps to do post editing &.mixing
Question: What is the minimal amount you can use for decent soundproofing? I've used a mic pointing up to my mouth at maybe a 30 degree angle with a sound blanket draped over a c-stand arm and it improves the sound tremendously. Curious what you guys think, without needing to soundproof the whole room.
You should know that if you record a voiceover in a mono (1 channel, let's say left only) and you put it on a stereo track (like in davinci resolve) you will have +3 db more than if you would put the recorded mono track in a mono track in the editor (davinci resolve) !
Could you do a video on sound recording etiquette? I was on a shoot the other day recording audio and was told by the post sound dude that I was creeping into his territory (I was basically turning the trim down to mute as a character walked off into the distance off camera; he said he would do that anyway in post). At what point do my duties stop and post begin?
I believe you guys covered this somewhat before but can you go in depth on room treatment, such as when recording in a large, empty room? What's the best way to flatten out a lot of that reverb?
What would be some ideas on how to record a speaker at a conference or event when we don't have an opportunity to plug into the soundboard? I've gotten lucky with being able to grab an xlr out from a speaker, but other times I've gotten terrible audio by trying to toss a recorder inside the podium or gaff taping it to the front of the stage or top of a speaker with no xlr out.
Lovely video (that mustache, though).. Question: Can you use an Ambisonics mic to make a stereo output more immersive? And what would be the best workflow for that? (Eg.. for recording a fiction project in a forest)
I have a question about the D-XLR. My understanding is that it turns the dual-mono 3.5mm TRRS to a balanced mono XLR. Does the mono to balanced conversion happen in the D-XLR, or does the D-XLR communicate with the Deity V-Mic to output balanced instead of dual mono? Also is it exclusive to the D3 Pro? Or does it work with standard D3? Finally, if I convert the other end of my XLR back into TRS, would it still work, or does it need Phantom Power? Thanks :)
When i'm needed to record a mono track or a stereo track? If i'm recording ambiences i'm obviously getting a stereo recording but what if i need to record sound effects, animal noises or dialogues? Am i using shotgun mono mic in all three cases?
I've heard many differing answers and curious what you guys think: What's the correct way to set audio levels in post for videos. And what are the ideal levels?
Familiarize yourself with LUFS, Luke! It depends on the end medium (tv vs web vs...) but this is part of normalizing your audio. I normalize to -16 LUFS for TH-cam, for example. Curtis Judd has some great videos on this subject, fyi
Can you guys help explain why and how to solve when I plug my recorder into a speaker output, the signal comes in super hot? Like for live events, so far I have plugged an XLR into those large speakers and at lowest sensitivity the recorder is on the verge of peaking. Sometimes I haven’t had access to the mixer
I don’t a have sound guy I’m it how can i get good audio mix in post I don’t have audtion or premiere pro etc is there any good phone apps that you can get good mixing what’s steps should I take from setting up mic, recording dialog to post editing just a phone
My question is how many mixers have fed the camera boom on the left channel and lavalier on the right and later heard the end product where they are still on left and right in the final mix? ✋🤮
An awesome video as per usual - always engaging, entertaining, informative, interesting & fun. 😁 👌 Cheers gents! 🍻 P.S. What's the name of the brand/manufacturer of the shock mounts that you're using on your mics during this episode?
When shopping for a microphone, is there a GOLDEN rule for whether or not you’d buy it across brands and models? Like, “never buy a mic that has _________.”
I see you ues pop filters on your talking head videos. Do you really think they are required for TH-cam and what are the big pluses of having them for a TH-cam channel you do by yourself?
1. Have you noticed the problem with your mics used so close here? Because they're so directional whenever you turn away from the mic the level drops drastically. 2. XY stereo array requires cardioid not super-cardioid. The SAR will be too narrow with your mic. The stereo array you show on the choir is not XY either. 3. What you state about "dual mono" makes no sense. A mono track can be panned anywhere between left and right. There is already a pan dial on a mono track. No need to duplicate it.
When have you mixed dialogue in stereo?
Good stuff as always! My question - What is output impedance (microphone specification) and what am I looking for when I read this on a microphone spec sheet?
I'm guessing the difference between the input signal and your line output? Did you ever figure this out?
The amount of production value and info in these videos is always amazing. Great jobs guys!
Always entertaining, always informative. Thanks for doing these!
Could you please make a video about Sound report? Thanks :)
Can you please do a video about the best ways to hide a lapel microphone and get clean audio during outdoor shoots? When fighting against the wind.

Thank you for the information.
Can you give us Kind of a checklist what to do/ look out for before using wireless mic Setups?
What is the biggest sound f-up you've made on set that you were still able to fix in post, and how did you fix it? What did you do afterwards to prevent yourselves from screwing up again?
Great video!!!! Thanks guys
Thank you! This video was very helpful to me!
1. what is the first thing to do as a sound designer when you get a film script?
2. Is there a way to edit 'audio to video' in audition?
Awesome channel guys, thanks for the info!
When will we have our new interchangeable capsules?????????
great video, which microphones are you using?
Always helpful guys!

I say yes to 2020. Been learning a few things the last few months therefore I better do something this year😁

also at 3:53 the lower third title says Sony F8 instead of Zoom F8

Another solid video. Thanks. My query: Are there tricks or advice you would give to something deceptively simple as Room Tone?

i want to start voice over studio.which deity mic best and what setting is best for voice over studio ?
It's like colour correcting then colour grading
what is the most overlooked step when fixing audio that was recorded with a really low gain in post? Thanks, always fun & informative!
What is appropriate LUFS for youtube and podcasting, and how do you guys achieve it?
Great way to begin this year. When can we expect the uni mic to be released? (B-Roll on answer to the low cut question brought it to mind🙂)
Can we get a full eq tutorial?
When i'm needed to record a mono track or a stereo track? If i'm recording ambiences i'm obviously getting a stereo recording but what if i need to record sound effects, animal noises or dialogues? Am i using shotgun mono mic in all three cases?
Are you sure that wasn't Burt Renolds and not Deity Steve?

what is the best way to remove echo in post?
If I get a UHF wireless system, what should I worry about next in terms of the legality of the frequency bands?

Quick question, for a video podcast that consists of 3-4 people speaking would you recommend mono or stereo?
Mono
Nice. Please do the choir challenge.
Hey guys! What are the main benefits of recording a mono audio signal across two channels (dual mono)?
There should just be a compilation of Andrew reacting to Steve's mustache
An awesome video as per usual - always engaging, entertaining, informative, interesting & fun. 😁
👌

If Jack Black and Burt Reynolds had a kid...

Sorry. That's not an x-y setup. X-Y has the capsules as close as possible. The pattern shown is closer to ORTF.
It is an XY setup because the capsules aren't at the tips of the microphones. They are actually much further down the tubes.
that guy is skinny version of Jack Black
