  • In this episode of Sound 101, Andrew and Ben talk you through 4 different types of locations and how you should be scouting them as a sound mixer on any level. They cover things you should look out for, like crowd noise, popular attractions, wildlife, etc and more importantly how to solve all of those problems, like long shotgun mics, directional lavs, and much more. We want you to be able to get good sound anywhere!
Sound mixers of all levels will learn about how to deal with locations that are hard to film at where many of the variables are out of their control. We even cover more possible issues with RF interference and tools to fix that. Andrew and Ben visit the Santa Monica Pier, beach, a suburban house, and a popular local park. Each location comes with its own challenges and its own creative solutions for sound mixers.
Let us know in the comments below if there’s a particularly tricky location you’ve had trouble with and we will do our best to give you some helpful advice for next time!

What's been your hardest location for sound?

Deity Microphones I haven’t been doing this long enough for a hard location, however I did catch an artist’s fart while doing foley for a music video intro, so I wound up putting it in the outro as an Easter egg haha!

Deity Microphones, my hardest location for sound was in a parking garage where there was echo and noisy traffic coming from the street outside. I ended up having to ADR the whole thing in post.

the most difficult by far... outdoor shooting range during a media event with 10 mph constant winds and gusts to 35 to 40 mph... in the desert. Unfortunately it was so bad I decided to scrub getting as much content there as I was planning.

My own flat where were recording a podcast. We tried recording at 2AM to get the quietest sound possible but then a factory far away had a breakdown and there was a high pitched scream of engines every 3 seconds. Completely ruined everything

Once when shooting a doc at a home in a suburban neighborhood, we showed up to find that several of the neighbors were having garage/yard sales. Once we were all set to start shooting the main interview shot, we heard a racket outdoors. We sent our PA out and learned that one of the neighborhood kids was running around playing a toy trumpet. Fortunately, the bribe to convince the kid to stop playing was pretty small. :-D

Love, love, love this channel and company! Though I wanna extend warning on leaving special items or keys in the fridge as a reminder. It’s easier to do that in a residence cause the owner is likely to be home or in the area, but in a corporate building or apartment, its problematic.
I witnessed someone leave a special item in the fridge in a corporate building. But when we all left for a company move, he completely forgot to get the item until he got to the parking lot and was locked out of the building. He spent quite a bit of time, calling security, owners etc. It was a headache.
I keep timed reminders, gps reminders (when I leave the area), and I have a location-based checklist. I’m very forgetful, and I cant trust myself with keys in the fridge lol.

The problem with long shotgun mics - not even 1m / eft - for example the Azdem SGM-2X with 40cm length is that you just can't fit it into a blimp without buying expensive extensions. I love the wind rejection blimps give, but they get expensive quickly with the length of the mic.

next episode ould you talk about phasing with lavs and mics and how to sync them in post to even the sample level? not just using gates and things which if your having phasing probably wouldnt be best bet.

Awesome thanks I would love to feature your mic brand on my next Spanish independent film production. I have my boom and 3 lav mic set's and they sound good on location but your mic may sound even better on location. I appreciate your tips very much awesome learning curve for me.

Great video! I noticed you have the same cart I’m using, where did you find the wheels you’re using? The ones that came with my cart, they began losing ball bearings after the 2nd day using it!

Filming in a Bar is always tricky, especially here in Las Vegas. So many places are open 24hrs so businesses don't close so we often have to deal with customers still around, but even then, the biggest trouble is always all the coolers/fridge units behind the bar. I love the visual aesthetic of filming in a bar, but man getting clean audio there has always been a problem.

    • @DeityMicrophones
      @DeityMicrophones  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is a great one. The sound of "bar ambience" is highly desirable but not when it gets in the way of clean dialogue!

This was such a helpful episode as I go into my first Feature film! Thank you! I had a question about which wireless I should use, 2.4ghz or UHF, when doing a scene in an airport. Specifically I was going to use my deity connect wireless but also bring my sennheiser g2 and g4 for backups.
    Blessings
