Which makes you wonder, for sales/reputation/marketing reasons. Why amp manufactures don't just put GOOD speakers in their 'budget' amps? I can't imagine marshall loves seeing their forums filled up with "Man the MG series sound like ass!" When the problem is to for them to eat $30 and upgrade the speaker to something nicer.
Yeah, my crappy old Crate GX-15R actually sounds relatively good when I run it through my 1960AV cab, haha. And it's like 4x louder as well. Don't get me wrong, you can still tell it's a solid state and sounds synthetic, but it most certainly does sound waaay better.
I think Marshall LOVES seeing the forums fill up with "Man the MG series sound like ass!" An MG is only-what?-20% worse than a hand-wired JCM800 reissue. But the MG gets just a minuscule profit margin for Marshall at $359 whereas the JCM800 hand-wired has a much larger profit margin at $2,599 despite the increase in manufacturing cost. Beginners aren't going to be on forums and aren't going to have a budget anyhow. So they'll still buy the MG. Meanwhile, people with more experience are going to be more concerned about reputation and will then shell out the money for a super pricey reissue. Marshall doesn't want people to start saying "Man the MG is pretty darn good. I'm gonna just buy it for $359."
If you never told anybody what you were using, and this tone was a on a record, the snobs would never know. It's a very usable tone! And as always, the cab/speakers make the biggest difference. I sometimes play my little MG15 combo through my 1960A cab and it's a great sound!
Exactly what most people forget the most important part is speakers for overall tone (amp is important for harmonics, saturation, compression and distortion), most amps through a cheap 10inch sound bad, a 212 or 412 with nice speakers can make most things sound better.
I agree brother. Change the shitty speaker and be done with her. I own two of the older MG100DFX and a MG100HDFX, and I love them. I play them thru some Italian Jensens and oh lordy does it sound good.
Could not agree more, the guitar community (the majority I would say) consists of a lot of people in the habit of simply repeating what they have heard. Trust your ears, you own critical facility, and your wallet will be thankful more often than not. I started on a Marshall solid state, then owned about 7/8 other amps, both valve (Orange, Fender, Vox mainly) and solid state, as well as some excellent preamps and my conclusion at the end of it all was I had the best overall sound on the solid state for my way of playing (with a telecaster and modest pedal setup for me). It can be feel a bit overly compressed from the off, so I'd lay off using any more compression but the reverb is very good for a built-in. 1% of 1% may actually be able to hear the higher end detail not quite matching that of valve amp, or the highest end of harmonic series audible to us shelved off at a certain point, but when people start talking about the warmth of valve amps, ask them to define warmth exactly and see what happens :) It's all highly subjective in any case and similarly no one can define the aesthetic qualities in a manner truly intelligible to anyone but themselves. Trust your gut and your ears, if it sounds good to you, its right for you regardless of all other technical/reputational factors. If you connected with something, there's a good chance other people will too.
This model MG is a good amp.. I've owned tube amps , rack gear, so heads etc been playing for 30 years.. tone primarily comes from your hands and having a good ear knowing to dial in an amplifier.. I run this exact head through a 82' Jcm800 1960a cab.. believe me when I say most of the guys posting negative comments would not know there's a SS head plugged into it.. ALSO there's a way to program the mg100fx head into a manual mode that bypasses the preset mode. It is a little tricky to program at first...also for the classic Marshall 80s tone you have to take off the fdd mode..
I was waiting for this) I remember my first "amp" was a distortion pedal plugged into a home stereo system, then I bought an MG, I was so happy with it:)
Johan you are my hero! I hoped and and asked if you had ever done cheap Marshalls (specifically the MG100) and my cries have not fallen on deaf ears! You legend! thank you!
Terrific video! Though it's good fun to hear cranked-up vintage superleads and such, vids like this are valuable for educating the guitar community and disproving biases about the capability of affordable amps. Excellent tones from a fantastic player (and a bit of help a nice 4x12 cab)!

Congratulations ! Really amazing !With decent loudspeakers, this sound is one of the best Marshall sound I ever heard ! Very interesting : between classic sound and modern.... I love what I've heard... In fact, the superiority of valve amps is a total myth because cheap amps like combos are sold with cheap loudspeakers. Valves amps are sold with Celestion speakers for exemple... The difference is huge !!!
Well! The certainly sounds way nicer than I expected it to! I was excited when I saw the title of the video, and knew that you would make it sound good. I might have to pick one of these things up. I believe they're pretty cheap on the used market. Thanks!!
Thank you Johan! I have one too and it's a great amp. I use it a lot for practice and on stage. Never let me down. With a good cabinet, this amp goes well and the price is affordable. So ideal for beginners! I don't understand the bad rep.
I personally bought a used Marshall MG100 HCFX halfstack with the matching cab from a local music store. I friggin love it. Though, I'm probably gonna replace the speakers. The stock ones are ok, but I want more out of this thing.
Me too, I was really surprised by what I was hearing/feeling. I also own Marshall tube versions so that speaks volumes. The hate is just crazy, these are great sounding solid state amps, especially through quality speakers
I have the 2009 Marshall MG 100FX 2X12 Combo I will not part with it ever it's a remarkable Amp paid $600 for it and 12 years later still going strong and sounds fantastic!
Here you go guys. Cheapest Epiphone bolt-on LP and the infamous Marshall "Oh the horror!" MG. British rock tone in spades. Proof! TONE IS IN THE FINGER! Still won't lose my GAS haha.
I just got a second hand version two day's ago in red tolex. It's a keeper. I'm running through two 212's. It's a real amp, two 1/4 speaker outputs and an 4 ohm min. load, so I can run 2 8 ohm cabs. The footswitch allows me to switch between all 4 channels and that gives outstanding control. It has an FX loop so I can run tube preamps or pedals and turn them on and off as I wish. That's a real lot of control and it sounds good clean and at moderate volumes and also at hi-gain very loud ear hurting volumes. It has reverb, chorus, flanger and delay as a sort of bonus! -Peter age 71 P.S. Mine has a tweed and black cloth weave on the front that looks great inside the red tolex cab. Oh, and leaving my MG100FX on all day is not a concern, I do lower the gain and volume knobs when not playing but that's all I do. Hopefully she shall last decades.
Back when I was growing up this would of been pretty sweet. but luckily I got an Ampeg stack. There wasn't the availability back then it's everywhere now. Sounds fine for noodles but not a go to for sure lol need tubes to satisfy my ears. Thanks again for another great video don't stop.
Sounds good to my ears. Sounds like a Marshall to me. The only thing that bugs me about them is the look. I wish they could have put it in a more classic looking casing like the MOSFET or something. You have great tone built in Johan. Another fantastic demo!
I have one of these and couldn’t figure out why I could never get it to sound right. Then I lowered my pickups way down and boom- tone city. Am running it through a little quarter stack and it sounds fantastic for practice.
The Marshall MG 100FX is much better than most Tube Amps i have had mine for seven years no issues i use both tube and the Marshall MG 100FX Together and you have no clue how many times the Tube Amps Shut down and the Marshall MG 100FX kept going strong no i dont buy into the Tube Marshall Amps are the best No their not not at all when you go on stage with a Marshall MG 100FX your Guaranteed your getting through the next two hour's issue Free and Excellent performance from the Amp cant really say that about a Tube Amp
I want to Add some of these MG Marshall combos aren't Cheap the MG 100FX brand new will set you back $600 USA Dollars and on the used Market in Good condition seen them at $300 Dollar's i personally wont rely on any Tube Amp you cant but i would rely on the MG Marshalls simply put fantastic Amps
I have this amp on 30 watts version, sounds good. The reason why the people hate this amp is because are looking sound like a JCM/Plexi series and this amp is good for beningners, sounds some raw and grungy, is right the fact that combo series has cheap speakers of 4omms but Johan one more time has broken the myth of this amplifier. Good video!
This was a great demonstration! I had a little MG15 (?) Had the small 8" speaker.... I was still relatively new to guitar (3 years or so?) And thought "oh man I own a Marshall now!" Then after awhile I realized it sounded awful, buzzy and tinny. Many years later I blew the speaker trying to kill the amp and then removed the chassis from the cab and wired a 1/4 jack to plug into my 4x12... I was pretty blown away how decent that thing sounded! I actually enjoyed recording with it a lot and realized then how damn important speakers are.
I'm playing a Marshall MG 10 in my study. It's perfect for what I want. It doesn't do high gain,. but it does classic rock very well. I've tried loads of others and this is the one of the cheapest AND one of the best....oh and I've owned Marshalls and Peavey valve amps and gigged with Fenders and Mesa Boogies so I think I've got a pretty good idea of what I"m talking about. Anyway, each to their own.
Nice one! I really don't understand why these amps get so much hate 'cos they're actually quite good (especially for the money). I've got the 30w version, which I use for messing around with at home. You can dial-in some great tones & it has built-in effects, which again, aren't that bad at all (certainly nowhere near as bad as some reviews make out) but the big plus is I can just turn it on & play. I don't have to wait for the valves to heat up (as I would for my Orange) & if anything does go wrong, it'd be cheap to replace (unlike my Orange). I hate this ridiculous notion that cost = tone. It doesn't. This is why I really enjoy this channel & guys like Dave Simpson. They use budget gear & make them sound better than many guys who use really expensive rigs, proving it really is all in the fingers. Cheers:)
used one of these with the stock cab and a bit of pedals for a recording for one guitarist, and the other had a full rack rig with a jmp preamp, matching power amp, and a 1960a slant with v30s. That rack rig had lots of issues and way too much going on in the signal path(full 8u rack with fx units and a large pedalboard. Long story short you can guess which rig sounded much better with the same recording setup... very underrated amps.
Nice work, Johan! Not surprised. Marshall MGs are awesome. I'd love to hear an Orange Crush Pro demo from you at some point! Also, dig the scenic shots on the left side.
i do like the pictures on the left...from your own collection? the amp sounds not bad, but i use a red stripe bandit with an eminence v128 so i dont really mind solid state...
Most who have used a Bandit have a preference for the bandit. albeit which stripe you prefer. But in the same frame of thought isnt the bandit tone a bit fuller all around. Which I always though that the bandit and the Pro were of the same line, with different gain and perhas speaker configurations. 30 years of Peavey bedroom amps let me play anything else with ease. but, then again I got away from SS opting for Vintage tone......I can shred on it though. But, I m picking up a Bugera T50 to replace the Peavey s for a while. tube and all. Just not sure about the speakers.....may have to go to Chicago for speakers.
cyrfung Fender Frontman has been sounding pretty decent for a while. Especially the 212 version. If I'm not mistaken Joe Walsh play one when he played at Daryl's House. Check it out. Think you'd be surprised. I also seen a few guys playing them around here for gigs.
X Crow That's nice. I genuinely wonder if Johan could make the overdrive channel of the small Frontman that come with Squier start kits sound nice. :-)
cyrfung The next one should be of a Marshall code 50!Mine sounds great even though I had to bail out on the 100 because it had endless release date push backs!I'm enjoying the hell out of it!
To me the main noticable difference between solid state and tube is the note's attack, with solid states frequently compressing the attack much harder than tube amps. For heavy riffs the extra attack of a tube amp makes the riff sound heavier, but there are also situations (such as unmuted tremelo picking) where the extra attack of a tube amp makes the attack overbearing, while the more compressed attack of solid state can help eleviate that problem. This observation makes me tempted to see how a tube amp would sound if a compressor was used to reduce attack.
Johan Segeborn oh yeah! Johan I have a question? Can I simulate the compression of a cranked Marshall tube amp with a compressor pedal? If so its better to run in front or in the loop? Thanks
No surprise....any head will sound great through that cabinet :) If someone buys this head, and runs it through an MG cab, or even a new 1960 cab, it will sound like a chainsaw, and they may be disappointed. You prove a point though. The amp sounds awesome!! Not a huge step down from a tube head..however, I bet that it does "feel" different when played. The cleans definitely sound solid state, to me. But the distortion sounds nice! The cabs are 80-90% of the tone, it seems :) Thanks for the great vid. Even the entry level Marshall, still sounds like a Marshall!!
the better and more creatively you can play the better any gear becomes. Johan makes everything sound good. then it's just a matter of what flavor tone do you want? we all gravitate towards different flavored tones. one man's mud is another's dream fuzz. one man's ice pick tone is another's perfect clarity. I have a cheap epi practice amp that I used to hate but once my speaker broke in and my playing skills improved it started sounding really good for just playing at home. pedals now sound better through it as well compared to a year or 2 ago. still planning to upgrade my amp and get more pedals out of curiosity but I'm super happy with what I currently have and I'm not in any rush.
I have the Marshall MG10, it is the 10-watts version. I'm totally agree that if a player is used to an amp with effects, in first instance will be not easy to get some sweet spot tones. I used a marshall-voicing in a pedal (like the Xotic SL Drive) into the clean channel and it helped a lot on it. So, the trick is to tweak the EQ knobs and the volume to get anything from roots style up to a heavier distortion. A delay and reverb pedals also work well with it.
Noel Gallagher recorded Definitely Maybe album with this Amp and a Epiphone Dot ES 335. I love solid state Marshall.I have a Mosfet, 8100, VS100, AVT 150 Tribute, all heads. Cab either 4x12 V30 or 4x12 Greenback ;) Great video as always!!
Johan Segeborn Orange as far as I know only only on stage, for that album in the studio the Marshall MG, Epiphone Les Paul CS and a tubescreamer. Great videos!
Everybody hates on these so much compared to the earlier Mosfet Marshalls. It would be cool if you could do a direct side by side comparison of newer Marshall solid state vs older Marshall solid state amps sometime to hear if they're really that much different. :)
Sounds good to me.....I have a MG100HDFX, the version prior to this one and it sounds great, much better than its reputation would suggest. I bought it with a MG 4x12 cab, but swapped out the cheap speakers for a set of second-hand G12T-75's, which transformed it. I think the previous comment about 'cheap speakers' was 100% correct.
That may explain its lack of popularity. I have read that some people found the amp to bright for their tastes. Greenbacks would surely cool it down a bit. Thanks for the info and for all of the very useful demos. Prost!
wow , some years ago i got a mg50dfx and never sound good , still my fender with seymour duncan not sound so good on this amp .... you are amazing man!
I've used the MG100 for rehearsals recently and I agree, the are surprisingly good for the price. Haven't tried a MG50 combo though and that's what most beginners/starters would go for.
Like others have said.. it ain't the head, it's the cabinet and speakers. I was unhappy with my either muddy or fizzy sound.. just couldn't get what i wanted so I set my eyes to a new tube head or a used 3210 after listening to everyone tell me what a waste of money the MG100hdfx was. So i found a good deal on a used cabinet with celestion creams and greens. Before sinking money on a new head i tried the MG head with the used cab.. ear to ear grin and saved $1100. I also have run the head into a Peavey mixer and out to vintage Acoustic PA speakers.. holy crap! The head is totally worth the $300 i paid new in '06. I'm not sure if the MG cabs are big enough to swap out the speakers, or how the cab design/material/construction would sound or hold up with upgrades..
For a little while I had one of these, and I also had a DSL100H. Neither was quite to my tastes. I'm a true JMP era Marshall freak. But honestly I liked the MG100 better than the tube DSL100H.
Made in Vietnam out of biscuit board, the circuit board is the size of a iPhone, no electrical component that if something happens you have to throw it in the rubbish. So I bought the MG 100 dfx made in England at the Marshall factory out of replaceable parts. Like all big manufacturers they try to source and make things in third world countries to cut on costs and you end up getting what you pay for. My mg100fx clean and od buttons had to click it numerous times to make contact and sometimes wouldn’t work and that was when I had it for only 6 months
Johan Segeborn Thanks for your channel. I like the empirical approach you take to these demonstrations. With this MG head, did you observe any degradation of the tonal characteristics at higher volumes? How hard did you push it in this video?
I own an hcfx, Wich has even worse reputation, but yesterday I finally bought a good marshall cab, from the also affordable DSL line, and it blew me away, such a great head (specially in the damping mode)
I have the older DFX model in 100watt combo form..I love mine and is the best sounding solid state ive played. effects are a little naff..but for simple Clean, Crunch and Filth tones its great, just add a touch of reverb...Mint :)
i miss mine :D had a z vex distortron connected to it for the heavier stuff and boy it sounded almost thesame as: van halen-panama at bedroom volume. thinking about rebuying it!
Hi Johan, I really love my MG50dfx combo but it lacks presence. Can you suggest a good 12" speaker with plenty of highs & not so boomy lows? (Maybe a G12-t75 would brighten it up a bit?) Any suggestions is much appreciated. Thanks Johan & Love Your Channel Bud👍
Hi John this the first vid of your and I really liked it . I too like solid state amps . I have a CR120 head , G100r Marshall stack last but not lest a 15 watt mini Marshall stack . Keep the vids Peace out ✌️
I think it sounds a bit like a jcm-800, but without the same amount of definition and dynamic. I have never played an MG, but you do it very well, Johan. Regards Lasse
Hi Johan, great video but this is a bit off topic. You should really try to order a set of Wizz PAF clones for your R8 ! this guy in croatia handwires them, not the cheapest pickups, but said by many to be the absolutely best. I would just love to hear you play them with an old Marshall.. Have a nice day and keep the great videos coming!
After your demo of the valvestate80v I bought the amp, and I'm loving it! I've read a few comments about the size of transformers having something to do with sound quality. Do you think it's true or is it similar to the tone wood debate in electric guitars? Thanks!
+zhauranak Glad to hear that, it's truly a great amp. That's an interesting question, I have always thought so too, I'm gonna ask Aleksander Niemand how that works. Good idea for a video. Cheers!
It comes to a fuller more modern up to date tone. I m not sure if it holds modern shred up all the way.....again. Magic in the pedal choice is a real possibility I think

Dave Simpson is the same way you should check him out if you are into a more blues style guitar playing
JayDog Totally. Johan and Dave are 2 of my favorite guys.
Yes I love the appreciation of cheaper gear!! Very different here from most of the internet!
I've had the MG100HDFX for years. It doesn't matter whether or not I'm using my tube amp or this one, I still get compliments on my tone. Good amp!
ibought one today! 2002 year, made in India great sound with Orange PPC412 cab
@@04Hunters Interesting, I never knew they made any in India. Mine were always Vietnam.
sounds pure Marshall to me..professional sound and quality..great Amp
Thanks Angelo

The speakers, cab, mics (and of course, the player) really brings this amp to life.
Like a lot of cheap amps, I think the reason why these get such a bad rep is that they come with cheap speakers.
+Tilen Marš Yeah, that's a big part of it
Tilen Marš You're totally right!

Yep after throwing thousands down the rabbit hole those amps sound the same every day and every gig hhhha no power conditioners needed etc
You remind me so much of home. There is a very large Finnish community where I grew up. Love your videos bud.
+Woodeso's Guitar Mods Thanks my friend! Glad to hear that.
Another example of Skilled Player + + Excellent Speakers = Great Tone!
+BB2009LZ Thanks, glad you like my playing :-) and yeah that cab is amazing.

+Magnus Hardt Yeah, distortion pedal into home stereo is indeed a classic ;-)
oh boy, THAT was my first "setup" in 2017. when I started playing, except I had to play an acoustic distorted, not an electric.
I had cheap pedal in a cassette player :-)
Fantastic sound honestly. I have a soft spot for these series of amps
Iam from uk you want marshal g50or cd
I bet you could play the Marshall Fridge and it would sound good as well. :)
Starkt jobbat med alla videos!

+Slashaholic Anonymous Thanks, yeah that 4x12 did indeed pitch in ;-)
This just popped up for me in recommended. I think if a lot of people just heard it they wouldn't realize it's solid state. Nice job.
Absolutely
I have a front man 65 and I adore the old channel , it's just fab
+Peter Butler cool, I haven't played that one yet. Cheers
"old" should be o/d of course!! ha ha
I've watched a few of your videos now and its quite an impressive collection you have. I'm also a Marshall guy but your passion is obvious. Cheers.
The Marshall MG 100 FX is the reason i Stopped using Tube Amps on a regular basis Love the Marshall MG 100 FX this Amp Does it All!
Same. So much more reliable. I even sold my pedals and i can just use the clean and overdrive channels
Also an eq pedal in the fx loop instantly made the mg 10 times better
Mate been playing 40 years had loads of amps
Back in 2005 got a TSL 60W 2X12..
After 3 live gigs.
Realised the old MG had more power and better sound...after pissing around with modeling amps..I have just got a new MG100w 1x12.
Happy again.
I have the older version of this amp, and believe, in the right 4x12 you can get amazing tones out of this little amp.
Great video, John. I enjoyed that.
Shoot, I’d figure a man of your knowledge would hate this amp with every fiber of your being. 😮
@@sevenpointsixtwo9707 if it sounds good it is good, simple.
Wow its much tighter than I expected. Especially when you got into the higher gain stuff. Great video!

I just got a Marshall MG100HFX a few months ago along with a 4 speaker cab. It is extremely loud and sounds great to me.
Once again, your cab do the job ^^ Great work and playing, as always ! :)
+Armanthio Thanks! Yeah the cab/speakers are really important to the tone
Well! The certainly sounds way nicer than I expected it to! I was excited when I saw the title of the video, and knew that you would make it sound good. I might have to pick one of these things up. I believe they're pretty cheap on the used market. Thanks!!
+Steve Perry Thanks Steve! :-)
Thank you Johan! I have one too and it's a great amp. I use it a lot for practice and on stage. Never let me down. With a good cabinet, this amp goes well and the price is affordable. So ideal for beginners! I don't understand the bad rep.
Thank you, I just found a low cost back up amp for my 1979 JMP MKII. You are great for making these videos
+Robert Earl Thanks man :-)
sounds like a Marshall! These amps don't deserve the hate they get.
+kraid80 Thanks :-) yeah GAS is an eternal curse :-/
kraid80 you can say that again!
-Peter age 71
P.S. Mine has a tweed and black cloth weave on the front that looks great inside the red tolex cab.
Oh, and leaving my MG100FX on all day is not a concern, I do lower the gain and volume knobs when not playing but that's all I do. Hopefully she shall last decades.
Someone in my street is selling one of these heads for 140 euros, I might buy it and check it out, sounds pretty good here. Love you work Johnny Seg 😎
You make the diference my friend! You make sound good anything! Cheers! Jorge
+harleybrujo Thanks bro, that's great to hear! Cheers Johan
I like the gainstructure of those MG-series
Back when I was growing up this would of been pretty sweet. but luckily I got an Ampeg stack. There wasn't the availability back then it's everywhere now. Sounds fine for noodles but not a go to for sure lol need tubes to satisfy my ears. Thanks again for another great video don't stop.
+Mark B Thanks Mark! :-)
Marshall MG series Are truly Kick Ass Rock Machine's☮️🎸🤘
I also use to think Tube Amps were better than Solid/Modeling Not anymore and the Mg 100fx is incredible
Sounds good to my ears. Sounds like a Marshall to me. The only thing that bugs me about them is the look. I wish they could have put it in a more classic looking casing like the MOSFET or something. You have great tone built in Johan. Another fantastic demo!
+TheMusicIsMyReason Thanks! Yeah it looks better upside down ;-)
Sounds great. Just one more toothpick on the pile long after the camel's back broke. Thanks Johan.
Johan I'm sure you could make sound awesome every amp on this planet! Rock on!
+Nicholas Da Ronch Thanks my friend! Cheers
got to say it sounds darn fantastic with a proper cab! great job Johan segeborn. .. :)

Hello Man , thanks for the great video, Can we able to connect it directly to the soundcard for recording in cubase ? Thanks
love this video. I agree with you 100%. the only complaint I have with mine, is the cab.
I think if you added a compressor, it would sound even more amazing
+RxDoctorDaddy Thanks! Yeah it pays off upgrade speakers.
Johan Segeborn it sounds great through the cab you are playing out of.
+RxDoctorDaddy Thanks, yeah that's a killer cab :-)
Cheers:)
+Ian McDaid Thanks Ian, I'm really glad to hear that!
used one of these with the stock cab and a bit of pedals for a recording for one guitarist, and the other had a full rack rig with a jmp preamp, matching power amp, and a 1960a slant with v30s.
JOHAN, This video just changed my mind as you don't have an idea about solid state amps. Thanks a lot!
i do like the pictures on the left...from your own collection?
the amp sounds not bad, but i use a red stripe bandit with an eminence v128 so i dont really mind solid state...
What's next? Are you going to make Line 6 Spider and Fender Frontman sound good too?
cyrfung
Fender Frontman has been sounding pretty decent for a while. Especially the 212 version. If I'm not mistaken Joe Walsh play one when he played at Daryl's House. Check it out. Think you'd be surprised. I also seen a few guys playing them around here for gigs.
X Crow
That's nice.
I genuinely wonder if Johan could make the overdrive channel of the small Frontman that come with Squier start kits sound nice. :-)
cyrfung The next one should be of a Marshall code 50!Mine sounds great even though I had to bail out on the 100 because it had endless release date push backs!I'm enjoying the hell out of it!
line 6 spider sound good? no such monster lol (crys a little plugs into spider thinks to himself must make a killer bath of meth)
The spider is pretty good clean but the dirty tones are questionable
To me the main noticable difference between solid state and tube is the note's attack, with solid states frequently compressing the attack much harder than tube amps. For heavy riffs the extra attack of a tube amp makes the riff sound heavier, but there are also situations (such as unmuted tremelo picking) where the extra attack of a tube amp makes the attack overbearing, while the more compressed attack of solid state can help eleviate that problem. This observation makes me tempted to see how a tube amp would sound if a compressor was used to reduce attack.
+Messiah of Fire That would be an interesting clip indeed
Johan Segeborn oh yeah! Johan I have a question? Can I simulate the compression of a cranked Marshall tube amp with a compressor pedal? If so its better to run in front or in the loop? Thanks
No surprise....any head will sound great through that cabinet :) If someone buys this head, and runs it through an MG cab, or even a new 1960 cab, it will sound like a chainsaw, and they may be disappointed.
You prove a point though. The amp sounds awesome!! Not a huge step down from a tube head..however, I bet that it does
"feel" different when played. The cleans definitely sound solid state, to me. But the distortion sounds nice!
The cabs are 80-90% of the tone, it seems :)
Thanks for the great vid. Even the entry level Marshall, still sounds like a Marshall!!
Great review as always... Greetings from Chile!
Any video of the Marshall Valvestate 8100 ???
Sounded good to my ears, and cleaned up well too.
the better and more creatively you can play the better any gear becomes.
+Mistic Formula Thanks, that's really well put
4:13 are you playing Nightmare from black sabbath, great sound amp thanks
I have the Marshall MG10, it is the 10-watts version. I'm totally agree that if a player is used to an amp with effects, in first instance will be not easy to get some sweet spot tones. I used a marshall-voicing in a pedal (like the Xotic SL Drive) into the clean channel and it helped a lot on it. So, the trick is to tweak the EQ knobs and the volume to get anything from roots style up to a heavier distortion. A delay and reverb pedals also work well with it.
Marshall makes the best sounding solid state amps in my opinion.
I always say speaker cabinets are so important. I have a vintage Marshall 4x12 and I can make any head sound like me. Tube or solid state.
Cool! Didn't he use an Orange for that? Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn Orange as far as I know only only on stage, for that album in the studio the Marshall MG, Epiphone Les Paul CS and a tubescreamer. Great videos!
Guy that got me into playing had a lead 100 mosfet. He used a Ds-1 for distortion. Amazing tone.
Which cab did he use
Prost!
+San Pedro El Guapo de Monte Thanks, glad you like them!
Replaced the speakers in the mg cab with 2 BlackHawk HP100s and 2 Invader 50s from WGS it became the stuff dreams are made of
I like the tone it makes :-)
You make 'em all sound great. I don't know how you do it!
You have some killer tone!
+puppyy780 Thanks! :-)
Through a 1960A cab it's perfect. It provides a simple tone with not a great uniqueness or complex texture but very very usable.
wow , some years ago i got a mg50dfx and never sound good , still my fender with seymour duncan not sound so good on this amp .... you are amazing man!
Thanks Vincent! :-)
I had a 50watt one and was great for clean rhythm, hard attack tones.
Sounds great to me. Speakers make a world of difference. I just don’t want to lug a 4X12 cabinet around! Great demo!
I've used the MG100 for rehearsals recently and I agree, the are surprisingly good for the price. Haven't tried a MG50 combo though and that's what most beginners/starters would go for.
+bgmnzz I tried the previous generation of MG50 but I liked this this one better.
But honestly I liked the MG100 better than the tube DSL100H.
sounds AMAZING to me
This amp sounds waay better (IMO) than the Bogner Atma you just showcased. It actually has midrange and sounds thicker.
The CFX is the exact same circuit as the FX. The hate probably comes from the carbon look vs the traditional.
i have a small mgfx combo at home. For practice this thing is great. I prefer my Jvm410 tho :D
iggrut as do I. I had the 30cfx and wasn't bad at all for practice. I have a jvm1c for practice now.
Just bought one, the crunch setting doesn’t work without my distortion Pedal. Anyone have a solution?
I have the older DFX model in 100watt combo form..I love mine and is the best sounding solid state ive played. effects are a little naff..but for simple Clean, Crunch and Filth tones its great, just add a touch of reverb...Mint :)
Jared Hind Snap, I love that you can get great crunch/overdrive at bedroom volume, yet can still fill a small venue for a gig.
i miss mine :D had a z vex distortron connected to it for the heavier stuff and boy it sounded almost thesame as: van halen-panama at bedroom volume. thinking about rebuying it!
The Marshall mg would be great if they could shield out some noise at high gain. But the sound is vary good.
Hi John this the first vid of your and I really liked it . I too like solid state amps . I have a CR120 head , G100r Marshall stack last but not lest a 15 watt mini Marshall stack . Keep the vids Peace out ✌️
Johan, this is off topic....but would you consider occasionally posting an instructional video detailing your playing technique/licks?
I use the the G100 R in my band Tube Rider very similar to the amp your using sounds great reliable and it's not $4,000.00
I think it sounds a bit like a jcm-800, but without the same amount of definition and dynamic.
Cheers!
My pastor has an s80, after every church service I hook up and jam the crap out of it. It's a really good amp, being a solid state
Tengo el combo 100 FX. y para mi suena increible. yo lo uso por return!
It comes to a fuller more modern up to date tone. I m not sure if it holds modern shred up all the way.....again. Magic in the pedal choice is a real possibility I think
