Adam, for what Harley charges we should not have to re engineer the whole damn suspension! After all, we are talking about Harley’s top of the line touring bike! Indian got it right, right out of the box! Mono shock long travel Fox shock, LED lighting, remote locking bags, riding modes, better balanced frame with low slung seating position, power windshield... and now a new 122 Horsepower liquid cooled motor ALL STANDARD! You just can’t ignore Indian these days! If Harley isn’t looking out for me, why should I look out for them? I am going with a brand that has it all figured out and engineered IN...That is Indian at this time. Maybe Harley should be paying more attention to improving their touring line instead of pushing a politically correct $33,000 ( taxes and fees) electric motor scooter! Sorry Adam, no sale on the Harley until they catch up with Indian! Ahhhh competition in America! I love it!

jim wortham Jim, it is obvious Indian/Polaris is in the motorcycle business for long term and not going anywhere. Look at the advanced tech they are investing in and they are very diverse producing all kinds of motor sport products.
I think you should visit a Polaris store and walk through their product lines...they are well spread out in the motor sport world and have a very committed racing program and completely dominate the flat track circuit taking 1,2,3,4,5,6 place! No one is touching them! And now a liquid cooled 122 horsepower touring bike, Indian is not sitting on their hands and is steadily grabbing market share, and that is freaking Harley Davidson out! These days, people want value and innovation combined with a rumbling classic motorcycle design which includes a powerful fire breathing internal combustion engine! Not a electric motor scooter which reminds many people of a $33,000 wheelchair!

They have almost 200 dealers. Could they use a few more? Absolutely! But they don’t need the level of over saturation HD has. Does Chicago land area really need 30+ HD dealers? 4 Indian dealers in that same area is fine. Check out the video by Gears and Gadgets on this topic and you’ll see that there are plenty of Indian dealers and the brand is getting stronger.

SMH. I am HD thru and thru, but it is getting ridiculous how they neglect the important stuff and instead charge the hell out of you to have parts that were once chrome, painted black instead. Sad. When you spend 30 to 40k on a bike it shouldn’t ride like shit and you shouldn’t have to spend thousands more to half way fix it. Legend only half way fixes the problem. Can’t agree on the frame. It’s the most rigid frame Harley has ever built. However the rear suspension is sub par. Pretty sad when you buy a motorcycle that is between 20-30k and have to buy a set of shocks that are another thousand dollars. There are great options out there ie. Legend, Russ Wernimont, etc. snowmobiles have had this tech for years.

First thing I did on my new 2019 Road Glide Special, Legends Revo rear shocks and AXEO front forks. I do agree with the comments about having to upgrade should we really have to do that on a 27K motorcycle? Suspension is a minefield of a topic and most bikes out there can benefit from an upgrade. Thing is, Harley put the cheapest shit they can get away with on their bikes and especially the baggers. Everyone I’ve spoken to in the UK with one complains about it. One shouldn’t have to be looking to shell out a further $£1000 on a $£25k+ motorcycle just to make it fit for purpose. I love the the Road Glide and the fact that it says Harley Davidson but I’d buy an Indian Chieftain Dark because it rides properly straight out of the box. Less chance of it lunching it’s engine too.

Other premium companies offer electronic suspension. You push a button for how many people, how many bags, then sport, cruising , etc. I have electric suspension on my super duke GT sport tourer. It is so smooth and relaxing. No bumps!!! My Super Duke GT is half the cost of a Harley and it has traction control and cornering ABS which are important with a lot of weight. It it calculating hundreds of times a second, rebound and compression for the best ride.

1st off, you are on a bagger, not a crotch rocket. Carving canyons isn't what they are, going fast isn't what they do. Next for years I bitched about Harley brakes. They have finally upgraded those but in reality Harley made a shit ton of money selling after market parts. If you look at Harley and they sales, they make more money selling shirts and all the extra crap then they do off selling bikes. So is Harley going to jump on fixing the suspension? No, because they hope you come in and spend money upgrading to their junk Screaming Eagle crap, that pretty much nobody does because most people are smart enough to go to Legends, Vance and Hines and so on. Just like it took 20 years to get better breaks, it will take years to update most things. Look they just sucked you into spending thousands to go to a stage 3 kit in your motor that could have been put in there to begin with. So if you want an aluminum frame, you want to bury your bike into the corners , by a crotch rocket built for it. That's what new riders don't seem to understand. Why Harley isn't for most young guys. Cost is one. 2 going fast and stomping corners isn't a Cruiser thing. Make up your mind what you truly want out of a bike. Buy one or the other. Or get both and choose the bike for the ride you want. But quit whining about my bike won't do what it wasn't designed to do.

@@adamsandoval brother, I'm older them you are. We built street glides out of bikes before anyone knew what the hell they were called. I have several bikes of my own. Call it what you want, but the reality is if you want to go fast and carve canyons, get the bike that is built for that shit. I don't know how many idiots I have heard complain over the years because they got off their rocket, to hear them complain because they are complete morons and try to ride their Harley like a rocket. Always bitching. Oh the piece of shit blew up, I can't push it on the corner. Yeah ya dumb shit, it isn't made to turn 10 thousand RPM and you blew it up. Then you bitch and cry to everyone and tell them what a piece of shit Harley is. That's where you get all the disillusioned people out there talking shit about how Harley leaks oil and they are always broke. Really because I have an Evo, that I have owned since almost new and all I have ever done is a voltage regulator in like 23 years. I also have a shovel that I haven't put much into either. It's not the bike 90 percent of the time, the the idiot on top of it. Then they listen to guys like you that want to tell them what there bike isn't. It's not made for that stuff, it wasn't it's design to start with. Just because guys are trying to make the bike do it, and are getting away with it. Will never make that bike be designed for it. I work in a metal fab shop and I can tell you that if you want an aluminum frame that is as strong as steel and then make that bike handle the way you want it to. All out of a union company you better be prepared to add another 10k onto the price of a bike that is already to high priced for most. That's why Harley isn't selling to the youth. I'm a Harley guy and that's all I will ever ride. But when you tell the youth of today they are going to spend 30 to 40k for a bike that doesn't handle doesn't stop and doesn't go fast. Buy they can buy a Honda for 20, what do you think they will buy? Buell didn't die because he built a terrible bike. It died because everyone could buy a bike that does twice what his bike would do for less money. Harley is doing it again. Same with Beull. They are making electric bikes that have no real purpose to the guy that really wants to ride because you can't go over 100 miles and then charging way more then the average person will ever spend to putt around town. It's a novelty at best. You can blow smoke up people's ass all you want and call it sunshine but people that are really true riders will always buy the bike that fits the purpose they bought it for. The rest of you are just posers.

Good stuff. I’ve never noticed any issues with the frame, mounting, effecting performance. No doubt for those of us taking 500, 600+ mile a day road trips, I certainly enjoy upgraded suspension. I just don’t like the mounting of those bottles on the back above my bags; I’d prefer them out of sight. Aside from that, just give me a Stage IV Kit, V&H true duals and go ride my a** off.

I upgraded my 2012 Ultra Limited rear suspension with a set of Super Shoxs and I noticed a huge improvement in the rideability of the bike on the very first ride. Everybody gets a bike and wants to change the air cleaner, pipes, mufflers, and other items, I would absolutely advise against all of that until the suspension is upgraded. Best money I've spent thus far on my bike.

  • @1AXMRDR

I've had my 98 FLHP for 22 years. I got rid of the stock shocks long ago. Went with progressive shocks and springs. Eventually added a brace to stiffen the transmission to frame which eliminated twist when cornering. You'd think a touring bike would come with great suspension from the factory but they don't.

  • @saddle8bag
    @saddle8bag 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The new ones don't weave and wobble. Think they fixed that circa 2009.
As to shocks, they do two things.
    1. The spring stores and releases energy.
    2. The dampers dissipate energy.
The idea is to have enough spring and compression damping to keep you from bottoming out and enough rebound damping to rid the shock of energy so it isn't bouncing around at the top of the stroke. Too much and the shock packs and the tire won't stay on the ground.

Factory stock Harley shocks are adequate for around town and bar hopping but if your are laying down miles, upgrade that suspension! Best investment you can make. Street and Road Glides come with a shorter shock to give it that lowered look but it comes with a price in comfort and handling. I switched out my factory rear shocks last month for 13" Legend Revo A and did a 800 mile trip in the Ozarks. My review can be found on the Revzilla website for Legend Revo A shocks. I highly recommend them, it made a world of difference.
