@JohnnyRebKy, I have owned HARLEY-DAVIDSON motorcycles too and I cannot tell you how many time it was in the shop for repairs. Windshields that broke in half and hit me in the face at above freeway speeds. The right saddlebag lid flipped off the saddle bag at freeway speeds again. The motor had to be rebuilt before 60,000 miles, no extended warranty. The toe and heal shifter broke off and this was all in less than 3 years of riding. I can’t even began to tell you how many times my wife had to help me push start the Harley in cold weather. After that experience I bought a Honda GoldWing, put over 110,000 miles on it and only service was oil, tire, spark plugs and check the tire pressure at regular intervals. I wish you could have tried something else to compare your Harley experience too. Thanks for answering me though, I don’t have a MC now and I know Harleys have improved but even used ones are too expensive.

@@vtxdaryl as I said I buy used stuff so I never spent over 6k on a harley. I also have a kawasaki vulcan 1600. Sorry dude I haven't owned a 1970s Shovelhead I had to push around 🤷. Mine have all been modern Harley's made in the 2000s. Never had one not start, never had one fail to do anything in 20 years. Oil brakes and tires . Yea I've had plenty of experience on other things to compare it with. But I can't make up a story about how much better they were than my harleys because I never had a problem with a Harley either 🤷. I'm a member of a Kawasaki forum and Honda and they all do the same old things any other machine is capable of doing. If you get online somebody somewhere has a Honda leaking oil or won't start. But it doesn't mean a damn thing . Nobody makes Honda jokes then they leak and fail to start...and it shouldn't be a joke because it's not the normal for them. Well I hate to break it to ya that leaking and not starting is also not a norm for Harley's either this century. My neighbor has 100k miles on his Harley ultra. He rides it from Kentucky to Las Vegas and back every year. Every person I know has one and they all fire up and go anytime 👍
Things can fall off any bike when you don't do a yearly check on mounting hardware and things like that . I do it on my Kawasaki too because it's perfectly capable of something getting lose just like all other machines.
      And I love Goldwing s

Thanks for sharing the video. Lots of valuable information for beginners.
I like to give a slightly different perspective, though. I started riding at age 46 which was 6 years ago. My first bike was a Road King Classic. Bought it and then did the MSF training. After completing the MSF successfully, I came home, jumped on my RK and took off. Two things here: 1. It is important to get a good education what motorcycle riding means. I think with the density of today's traffic, learning how to master every day riding situations is imperative. 2. Go big! At some point everyone wants a touring bike. You always look up so to say to the big twins and think one day I get one. If you start out on a Sportster and then Softail, you spend a good deal of your hard earned cash before you ride the bike you wanted in the first place. Get the bike you really want and ride it like you learned and you'll be alright 😀
Just my 2 cents ... Ride safe!

Just make sure it has fuel injection, and that the cam bearing has been replaced, or have it replaced, and the thing will give you 100K no problem. I weigh well over 2bills and the bike has more power than I ever use. You can pick up a nice one for under 5k I ride with guys on new Harleys, but my 97 Road King always gets the comments. Spend just a little more, and add a true track stabilizer. Your bike will handle as good as a new one.

When I decided to teach my wife how to ride we took her down to the Harley dealer and I explained to her that whatever bike she chose she needed to be comfortable sitting on it. I told her not to pay attention to the bars but to pay attention to seat height and comfort with her feet on the ground and on the running boards or pegs. You fell in love with a two thousand two fxdl Low Rider. I changed the bars in the risers so she wasn't having to lean forward to reach them and put a set of highway bars on it in case she dropped it, and a slightly lower Mustang seat so her feet were flat when she was stopped. Two things that I found most important for her where having a bike she enjoyed and liked + 2 was comfortable enough to be confident. It made a tremendous difference in the efforts you put into learning how to ride, verses giving up on it because she didn't feel confident. Or felt like she was riding a quote beginners bike". I also did not have to contend with buying a bigger bike six months or a year after she learned to ride. We just put a windshield and saddlebags on it and she was happy.

My first Harley was my last Harley.
In 1981 I bought a beautiful and expensive Harley called the ‘Tour Glide’. It was described as Harleys first frame mounted fairing. The problems began the day after I traded in my Gold-wing and bought my Harley.
I drive it to work and after my shift ended I find the battery is dead. I get a jump from am other bike and drive home. The next morning , I am ready for work but the battery is dead again. After work I drop off my bike at the Harley dealership to assess the problem.
The dealership has my bike for 3 days finally informed me they have to order parts. Another 3 days pass and I’m notified that my bike was finally ready to roll.
I pick up my bike and finally it starts up on the first try. A few days later, My wife and I depart for Tonopah Nevada from Phoenix Arizona. About halfway there, the shift mechanism vibrates off at high speed. I bring my bike to a stop and walk about 100 meters looking my for shifter and connecting bolt.
After about 30 minutes of searching I finally locate the shifter and the bolt and re-attached it to the shifter arm. On the road again we finally reach Tonopah and checked into our hotel. The next morning we decide to ride to Reno. The battery was again, dead.
We finally decided to return home before anything else happens. We get a jump, ride home directly to the dealership and drop off the bike.
My wife is really upset that I traded in my Goldwing for this piece of junk tour glide. We go to the dealership and try to trade back for my Goldwing but it was already sold.
Previously we had put about 110,000 miles on our Goldwing and never had any problems. My wife said no more motorcycles unless we buy another Goldwing.
The Harley dealership would not give us a fair trade in for the tour glide so I traded in at the Honda dealership but lost 3,000 bucks on the trade in.
We bought another Goldwing and again enjoyed more problem free travel. Another 100,000 +miles. My wife loved the quiet powerful engine, no vibration, no problem Goldwing.

Sportster, made for in town and short rides.
LOL I've taken my 2004 Sportster XL1200C on road trips to Daytona, Leesburg and Laconia. All of those trips for me were 800 to 1000 miles one way. I had a blast on my Sportster. I've been riding for over 8 years, I still love my Sportster and see no reason to upgrade just yet.

my first bike is the 2021 road king special blacked out vivid black love it so much cant get enough. tried a few of my friends bikes and I couldn't stand the large cluttered front ends just love that open feeling and added a blacked out Smokey windshield but I only use that for distance around town I love the wind in my face and non obstructed view and it feels really nice between the legs and the power is there with the 114 its just my favourite bike and I tried a lot before I dropped that kind of cash out of my bank account. the best Harley for you is the one that feels right and makes you excited to ride everyday and you can afford without payments keeps the wife happy or in my case she left me before i got the bike so i could spend a lot more without repercussions lmao!

I bought my first Harley back in January which was the Iron 883. Three weeks later, I traded it for a Low Rider because I was riding a lot at highway speeds and riding about 80 miles a day, so I needed the 6th gear and a bigger tank. Do I regret buying the sportster first? Not at all. The Iron is a great bike, especially for in town riding and got me used to a V-twin because I came from Yamahas. The Low Rider fits me much better and has plenty of power. Now, to customize it!

I've been a life long cyclist, never thought about motor vehicles, never even got my license, but I fell in love with a Harley Heritage Classic 2021 I saw recently so I've been looking into them. One massive observation I've made so far is that these huge motorbikes have a lot more in common with a car than they do with a bicycle.

    • @halnwheels
      @halnwheels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I hope you get one. However, I'm not sure about your observation as it pertains to the Heritage Softail Classic you've been looking at. Now, if you were looking at a newer Electra Glide Ultra, I'd be more inclined to agree with you. Make no mistake, these are two wheeled machines with handling characteristics that can't be confused with a car. And the Softail has no entertainment system or navigation either. It's got power and great looks with a quality of finish that is second to none. Have fun!

I like a couple of the new Softails quite a bit, the Standard and the Low Rider. The high end models seem like too much money to not step up to Touring with the exception of maybe the Heritage. I LOVE the FLHT, the understated and practical Electra Glide Standard, no frills, just riding. It’s near perfect and the price is a bargain compared to the rest of the Touring line which, for me, leans too heavily on the custom look on several models and pricing is out of the realm of what most normal working people can afford.

I took the course at age 44 and started with a 2012 Softail Slim. I know not very bright with a brand new bike for my first bike but it worked out great.
I rode that for 5 years and then switched to a 2017 Street Glide Special. Absolutely loved that bike. I sold it 4 months ago because with everything going on in my life with work and medical stuff I just didn't ride it much so I set a price I felt might be a little high and told myself if someone wants to pay that price I would sell. Sadly someone did and I sold the bike but I miss it way more than I thought I would, therefore, I am thinking about getting a Fatboy.
I have always wanted a Fatboy (even though my Street Glide was my dream bike) but I can only afford one bike at a time so. Plus the Fatboy will be better for my lesser riding needs than I have had in the past. I don't know I am still thinking about it but I really miss the roar and the wind therapy.

63 yr old here bought my “rest of my life bike” last yr, after not riding for 15-20 yrs. In the past owned 500-750cc Kawis and Honda’s. I chose a 19’ FXLR, the standard one with the 107 in chrome, in the dark red color. I’m 5’7” like you and the seat and riding position is perfect. I can flat foot it with ease. I have the clip on luggage rack and backrest , and the small clip on windshield. I may add some highway pegs at some point for long trips but the mid controls are fine really. Otherwise it’s stock and I see no need to upgrade or change anything, loud pipes aren’t really my thing. It’s proved to be the perfect all around cruiser for me. It’s light and nimble enough for a daily rider, and with some waterproof soft bags it’s been on a 3500 mile adventure with ease.

My vote for the first HD would be a used Deluxe Softail. It has a low seat height and a low center of gravity which makes it much easier to control at parking lot speeds for newbies and those that are vertically challenged. It also has the big V-Twin engine which will serve you better on road trips, even shorter ones. Since these are traded in all the time by people upgrading, they can be a less expensive option. Nothing wrong with Sportsters, but while lighter they do have a higher center of gravity and have a higher seat height.

I paid about $12k for it in 2013, who ever had it before me put around $10k of chrome on it, replacing all black parts, a Mustang seat, nice leather bags, and Vance & Hines pipes. Only thing i have done is jet out the carb. I do plan on upgrading the cam soon. The bike is beautiful and it rides nice! I get a ton of compliments on it, especially on the two tone blue and white, as most Harley’s are black and boring.

My first Harley-Davidson and first motorcycle was a brand new 1971 Superglide. Yeah I’m old. Now riding a 2018 Streetglide. Great comfortable bike. Fast enough for me. It does at least 115 stock. I don’t like getting speeding tickets. LOL Buy what your confident with. Good Luck.

I've owned 3 fxdf's still have an 09, and an 01 roadglide I love both for different reasons, if could only have 1, hands down fatbob wins! Everyone should skip the awkward top heavy sportsters and by an older dyna. That is before the value skyrockets because HD quit making

Road king is still the bomb. Best bike Harley ever built.

Lonny Fuller agreed! If my wife was into riding I would have gotten an Ultra. But alas it’s just me and my Road King hitting the pavement. Love the ride!

My first Harley was the iron 883 and everything you mention about this bike is the honest truth. I currently own a 2020 low rider S. I love this bike.

The first H-D you should buy is the one you want. Was riding bikes since I was about 7 and kinda was out of it in my 20's then I bought my first H-D at age 28. 1993 Low Rider, used. Now own two Evo's and two Shovel's and nothing with a fairing and at 50 still like to ride long miles without a windshield. PS I don't care for the new bikes with all the electronic bullshit on them.

Seth Thomas unless someone is a new rider, then they should get a junk learner bike unless well-heeled.🙂

I’m coming from a sport bike and my first Harley-Davidson was a 13 V Rod Muscle and I absolutely love it 🤘🏻 I definitely am interested in the Road Glide too but that will come in time. Thanks for another helpful video.

I've always enjoyed your videos. I didn't realize until watching this video you are out of Charleston. I recognized the roads you were riding.
