    That grommet in the vertical inlet lol. When you showed the air box at the very beginning I spotted the grommet was missing and that the tank mount peg had filed the airbox away. Glad you found it before it as a disaster.

    First off, you lucky S.O.B. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE BIKES. The 748 has been a dream of mine the moment I sat on it about 20 years ago (I'm 41 now). Awesome video man, enjoy her these older bikes are classics and disappearing FAST TOO. 👌

    Put a magnet on a stick, in the strainer hole and wave it along the bottom of the sump, if you don't pick up anything major, the engine may be good.
    When checking the valve clearance, check for the recommended clearance at the high point of the lobe. The high point may not be at TDC, especially the closing lobes. You will have to remove the belts, put the piston 1/2 way down the bore, and rotate the cams to find the high point of each lobe, and measure and set the clearance. Best way to do this is with the heads off, on the bench. Starting with the closing rockers pull all the rockers and springs on the cam you're working on. Reinstall the 1st closing rocker without the spring, and making sure the collets are fully seated in the valve & shim, set it for a slight drag at the high point of the lobe. Slight drag means barely discernible as you, using the pully, rotate the cam by hand. Do this with the cam bearing blocks all their screws in and tightened (you'll get a false reading if you don't). Remove the shim and closer from the valve you just did and move on to the next. Re-assemble all the closers with springs and do the openers. Openers don't need to be done individually in the same manner as the closers. Buy a shim kit, they were reasonably priced, and you may need at least one at the next service check.
    Great vid! And good luck with her! She's a keeper! (Can you get the image full screen!? Or at least turn the phone horizontal?)

    Inspect rocker arms even if cams are in spec or you might be needing new cams when worn rockers damage the cams. happens mostly to openers but can be both openers and closers.

    Owning a 2002 748, I have considered checking the torque on the Alternator rotor bolt... mine has the later 3 phase alternator, the Haynes manual claims that these later alternators dont suffer with lossening of the nut??

    small spacers under clutch outer cover are normally embedded in the rubber sound deadening gasket, they are removed and used as spacing normally when open covers are used. Use/make similar spacer on all 4 bolts or buy a cover patterned off of a early cast aluminum cover that did not have a sound deadening gasket.

    • @TheOriginalCoda
      @TheOriginalCoda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not necessary any more, unless you are racking up the miles. If you buy decent kevlar belts, do the job yourself (properly), then check them every 12 months, there's no reason they won't be pristine after 5 years.

    Bit of a bike mechanic, warning bells ringing loud and clear. Having worked as a professional mechanic I always dread these people. I could write a book on some of the crazy things I've seen.
    I'm wondering if dropping the motor out might be the way to go if the clearances are suspect and easier to do the belts. Very interesting though and thanks for posting.

    That rubber looks like the item that fits into the front of the airbox, it appears to be missing at 1.20? The tank peg locates into it, was the tank a bit loose at the front end?

    You mentioned Grimsby Dave. May I ask where you're located? I'm from Hull but lived in Australia for 47 years. Eldest son had a Ducati very much like yours, plus a Fat Boy and a Fireblade. Decided he was desperate to get a mortgage so they all had to go. I never got to ride any of 'em, a bit too old now and been off motorcycles too long. Must say I'm enjoying these podcasts though, always had a soft spot for Ducati's, but never owned one....

    Powder coating is for amateurs , it's not an outside finish just take a look anything that has that type of finish that's done a few winters in our climate , if you have to do the shims in the future take the heads off it's so much easier and safer , if you drop one of the half rings down the oil return holes on the vertical head it'll end up in the gearbox 😉

    • @TheOriginalCoda
      @TheOriginalCoda 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bloody cheeky guy! I give you the spare I have and you moan .lol . Think if the grommet had been in there any length of time you would have had running issues and not even run properly and it would have shown signs of damage due to butterfly ! More likely when you were trying to get the tank off !!!!!!!

      @obsession_engineering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Carl, I appreciate the parts, merely that moment I realised I needed extras, lol.
      The grommet was pretty well wedged, it probably wouldn't have been able to get passed the valve guide anyway, just a bit of a surprise to find!

  • @sinuous001

    Surely the rubber grommet was a cheap performance mod. Restrict the air intake and get a richer fuel mix.
