A true story told to me from way back when: Mr 'JEF' bought one of these brand new. It was so wide (note the bulge of the sides) that he kept scraping it on his gate posts in rural Wales. He replaced it with a brand new E-Type and he then complained that it was so risky getting out of his gateway since half the car had to jut out on to the busy main road before he could see anything (bonnet so so long), there was no pavement or verge and the gateway pillars were right on the road's edge. He moved house and went to live on an island that had a causeway but the island was inaccessible at higher tides; so he bought a brand new Amphicar to use to cross the water. That sank when someone he was giving a lift to forgot to slam the door properly! My two favourite classics are the Mark Ten Jag (420G) and the E-Type Jag. Proper Jaguars, not like the Jelly Mould Junk they are today. Thanks for this great upload of a fantastic car.

They were absolutely gorgeous rolling sculpture and delivered on the motto of grace, pace and space in spades. The front of that bonnet was an absolute masterpiece of sheet metal pressing and the rear fenders and boot are not far behind!! While they are dated today they were a major step forward in styling of the day breaking out of the tall formal style of the Mk VII to IX jags and the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, etc of the day.

What a gorgeous example of a much under rated and very rare classic Jag. I think most people don't realise just how huge these cars are compared to the previous S type and later XJ6 even. You need a big garage to house one of these but it would be worth it I am sure!

Mine is a 1965 Mark X and a very formal black exterior with black interior. It needs a restoration at 90,000 miles but has no rust considering it's life in the American desert. I was bowled over the first time seeing this car.

My dad had a 1968 Jaguar 420 G in British Racing Green. It was awesome to ride in as an 8yr old kid. That car made me a life fan of Jaguar's and to this day I have owned 9 and still own a 1975 XJ6 LWB though it is in need of a huge restoration job. The car in the video looks gorgeous and I want it but haven't the brass to buy it sadly.

I had one in British Racing Green, with light (shale) beige interior, the Walnut wood was so lovely, special made for a customer also had Air Conditioning unit in the boot, which was huge. Only drawback was the rear door lining would suffer from dampness and the Wood backing would crumble having to relpace every 2 years.

These were exceptional cars but were far bigger than almost all of their European contemporaries. At 74" these and the preceding Mk Xs were actually the widest car to ever come out of a British manufacturer, including the stately Rolls Royce of their day!! In many ways they were best suited to the North American market but that market was, in general, too unsophisticated to appreciate them. Most North American Jaguar sedans were owned by ex-pat Brits or Europeans who had a history with the car. Fortunately a few survived here and I was fortunate to find and buy a 68 which was my pride and joy for about 4 years in my late 20s. And to make it that bit more special it was one of the 38 LHD cars with a 4 speed manual. The 4-speed made it surprisingly spry for such a big car and it could in fact out-accelerate my Porsche 944 up to 40 mph due to it having a touch over 130 hp/ton. There was though a touchy balancing act between the throttle and clutch so as not to spin the rears when starting the car. The three return springs on those big 2" SU carbs added up to quite a bit of resistance and made the first movements of the accelerator quite sharp. If not careful you would suddenly have half throttle while engaging the clutch! One can only imagine how it would have performed if the V-12 had been ready for it as the engine bay was designed for it. Sadly, like many of these old classics it was one thing to afford to buy it and an entirely different thing to afford to run and properly maintain it. Great memories though and if it wasn't the case before owning it, this car cemented me as a "Jag man" for the rest of my life.

Oh lord, that is a very nice specimen. In the "correct" colour for Mk.X, and the right interior. It looks like a car a hitman would drive. It's got that villainy menacing look to it, while being very restrained and classy.

My old crusty Jag/Rover/Rolls mechanic taught me to close the bonnet by pushing the top corners of the grill with the back of my hands. It lowered the bonnet evenly and avoided fingerprints on the bonnet paint and chrome grill.

As a child a black MK10 was my dream car. I had a matchbox version which I repainted black! In my opinion the lines of this car are superior, though perhaps less practical than the later XJ. This was Sir William's most graceful car. It makes Rolls Royce's, Bentley's and Mercedes of the period look dated or plain by comparison. Aesthetically It simply has to be one of the most imposing and beautiful saloon cars of any generation. The only modern equivalent would for me, be the first generation Mercedes CLS, but that still doesn't have the same presence as the MKX/420

Slightly bigger and heavier than the xj6 that replaced it in 1968/69, but not as powerful.
The xj6 was slightly more reliable and better on fuel.
Funny thing is I can remember seeing these sell down the car auctions for £200 back in the early 80s, back then they weren't nearly as desirable as xj6 that could be picked up for less than £500 at the car auctions in good condition.
That's probably down to the fact that the early mk1 xj6s from 68-70 ish, still looked like a modern car in the early 80s, the newer xj6's hardly looked much different, apart from placing of indicator lights and a few tiny changes..
From a distance it still looked like a new expensive car.
Whereas the 420g looked dated and was a luxury 15 year old banger at the time.
I've 100s of old photos of cars passing through the auctions in the early 80s with details and prices they sold for.
Escort mk1 going for £50, same for mk2 cortinas etc, but there were still plenty on the road back then, often rusted and dented.
It's only when something seems to vanish for 10-15 years does it become desirable/ collectible.
Cars last longer now, in the road I live there are 2 x reg ford focus mk1s in daily use and a y reg vw golf, so plenty of 20 year old cars used as daily drivers with little to no sign of rust

Just shows you how things have moved on 128,000 miles and engine and transmission has been rebuilt on this old girl and yet 128,000 is nothing on modern cars even in the 70's when I started buying cars you avoided cars that had done 100,000 unfortunately I still ended up with some nails.

In it`s day this was a Jaguar that could park up beside a Roller, Bentley, Aston Martin or Mercedes finest for that matter, and make them all look old school, when Jaguar`s golden age could produce cars for less than half the cost of the best in the world. Jaguar followed these 420 S and big G models with the legendary XJ range and they put it up to the German marks for decades but here and now in 2023 Tata have failed to replace the legend XJ model and that in itself is a sad day for all petrol heads. Sort it out Tata. There is a great big world of electric tech just waiting to take the XJ into the future! Speaking electric, how about a huge all electric motor system conversion on this old Jag 420G. I think it works really well on big old luxury barges from the past. It converts them into something they could only originally dream of on the quiteness front and fluidity of excelleration and power delivery.

I cannot remember [early 70's] if the cars we got down under had electric windows or aircon, however there was a problem with certain tyres that caused the car I rode in to shake sideways at only around 30 mph, Bob Jane T Marts [according to Bob, came up with a "fix" using a certain brand or size of tyre].

Some [if not all] of these models had an unfortunate throttle linkage where an actuating rod fitted into a spigot on the firewall which, fortunately on the car i drove had a 3 point disconnect a few inches out from the firewall, this proved necessary when I drove off a grassy verge and hit the right rear trailing arm on a large drain pipe, this caused the car to come to an abrupt temporary halt until it jumped the concrete pipe, Unfortunately the engine did not immediately stop as as abruptly as the body which caused it to jump forward and drop the rod from the spigot, not a good thing to happen happen in the dark out in the country, fortunately we had a few tools and a torch and were able to undo the three bolts and relocate the short rod. Also the trailing arm should really be held in place by a stud and a nut instead of a bolt as it make for a wobble job to remove the bent bolt.

Come now, while not pristine the wood isn't really all that bad considering it's age and even the front seat leather is pretty decent. I did think the top of the rear seat back leather was pretty rough though, probably the result of the car having spent at least some of its years un-garaged and not having had sufficient cleaning and conditioning. Of all the problems these cars can have, the interior upholstery and wood refinishing is eminently fixable if not necessarily inexpensive.

Cracks in the dashboard and the leather seats being aged are part and parcel of a car this age. It's totally acceptable. As for the radio, that's an easy task to do. If it takes you 20 minutes to change it out, you were dawdling around for ten!
