This was a much better video instructing how to make the settings than the official Rainbird video. Their video left me confused, yours explained it very well, and was a much shorter video! Thanks

This video was well done and helpful. I kept finding videos that showed two different techniques for setting the left limit. Some, I now know, pertained to the newer rotor with a clutch, and others pertained to the older style without a clutch. I now know, thanks to your video, that with the purchase of our 20 year old house, we got an irrigation system that had the old style, without a clutch. I think I now know how to proceed. Thank you.

Every year in the spring, I always run the system for the first time and check the coverage. I always have to adjust the left side on a couple, and I always forget how. This is the video I always come back to. So thank you!

Mr. Sprinklerdaddy: From the looks of the comment section below, I would not be alone in saying that it would be FABULOUS if you could do a video where you set the left and right stops on an already INSTALLED, IN THE GROUND, WORKING system. I'm about to blow my head off!

    • @toma5153

Yes. Sorry late to chime in but I know exactly how you feel. Just spent 30 minutes on one rotor that I concluded must have an internal malfunction.

This fixed my problem. To answer the questions below, if you need to adjust 5 degrees right, yes, you have to go 355 to the left, but it's easy and doesn't take any time. It's not that big of a deal. I had to adjust about 40 to the right. I just went around 320. It took about 15 seconds. Also, if you go too far the first time, just keep going around to the left again until you get it where you want it. You don't use the slip clutch to the right, only left. I adjusted two sprinklers and one of them I had to go around again because I didn't get it where I wanted it the first time. No big deal, I just went around again. Worked just fine. It's a great feature, now that I know about it.

Yes this is crucial information. I stumbled on that and hoped it was OK and now I see others do it! I just hold the head up once I raise it. I have the tool but have to lift the head with my fingers once I do the quarter turn that shuts off the head. Installers were doing channel lock pliers in the ground to adjust left stop and I’m not sure why as this technique works great!

OMG, I finally got this down. Bought at the sprinkler strictly place and asked them how to adjust the arc. They gave me this real fast answer and forgot to tell me I needed a special tool. I looked on line and found many instructionals but could never get it right. Finally found this one, that explained the slip clutch and it made a lot of sense. Went out right after and adjusted it with one try. These guys at the sprinkler supply house must love giving partial info to women. Saved my fence and am watering exactly where I want to!

For a slow laner like Ogden here you go gramps >>> to adjust the LEFT HAND STOP (you can only adjust the left hand stop):
    1) Turn towards the current left stop until you hear a click.
    2) To set the new left hand stop - Keep turning the head & GO PASS the left click in step 1 above. You will feel some tension but just keep twisting left until you get to the position you want.
    3) Then twist back opposite right to see where your right stop is now.
    4) Twist back left to see your new left stop you just set.
    5) Use the Rain Bird screw driver to fine tune your radius after the adjustments above.
** Like Nathan Blood said below:
"if you go too far the first time, just keep going around to the left again until you get it where you want it. "

  • @jimdavidson5208
    @jimdavidson5208 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Let's all remember that the arc adjusting screw on the top of the head is for the RIGHT SIDE STOP ONLY. It only adjusts the right side. To adjust the left side stop, no water pressure on, pull head up with green rain bird tool, hold head so it doesn't drop down, turn head full right then LEFT till you hear the last click, then turn past the click to the desired left stop position. OR you can turn the entire head in the ground to the desired left stop position. This is for the 5000 series rain bird heads.

Thank you for the video. We moved and had a new RainBird system installed.
At 2 prior homes we had Hunter and Orbit gear drive heads. They are MUCH easier to adjust arc and throw radius. I have dug up and replaced several, each one comes with an adjustment tool.

Darth Yarx First of all, shut the system to OFF, use riser to lift the sprinkler head up. As he described in the video, you have to turn the sprinkler head leftward all the way the the position where you wanted. If you turned even 5 degrees too much which passed the proper position, then you need to redo/readjust it by turning sprinkler head leftwards all over again, stop at the position you desired. Hope this makes sense. It took me a couple videos to understand it.

I've never seen anything definitive. I did find out the hard way that I don't have slip clutches in mine. But as part of that, I found out that the easiest thing to do (to adjust left travel) is to simply unscrew the big upper cap of the rotor body (right at or barely below ground level) and lift the whole mechanism out of the case. You'll see that the mechanism is splined and so is the case. Just turn the mechanism to the left the appropriate amount, insert straight back down into the case, and tighten. you'll need to readjust your right travel afterward.

My question also....if the left hard stop goes 30 degrees to far, is there any adjustment to decrease the left hard stop or do you just dig and turn the whole unit back 30 degrees on the riser?. Adjustment to the right is easy with the (+) (-) screw.

This exactly same process works for the Rainbird 42sa, the "consumer" level version of the same product. I used the screw to get my desired 45° range, and then just forced the left stop where I needed it. Slightly suspicious because Rainbird does not mention the 42sa model has the slip clutch. Does not appear to have any damage.

Thanks, good video. Let's say you make an adjustment, and you go too far. Do you then do the opposite by "over turning it" to the right (clockwise), or do you continue in the same direction (counter clockwise) approximately 35x degrees to get to your final desired setting.

@Chris Okkerse Your reply creates more questions than it answers. For one, the questioner wrote it 6 years ago so its safe to say he doesnt have the "ser" model. Secondly, u totally didnt answer his question relative to the video's own model since its clear he has this video's model. And thridly, your last sentence is just plain silly since u say one thing and then say if its new then dont btother to adjust but instead twist entire case. You do realize by adjusting entire case you are trying to twist it further onto the threads. if it is fully threaded it WON'T turn anymore. Dumb sentence u wrote.
