The wait is over, we have finally made it to Japan!! The number one place on our travel bucket list has always been Japan and we are so excited to share all the delicious food with you!
This, being our first food tour in Tokyo, we are just getting our feet wet and getting comfortable learning Japanese culinary customs. We randomly found an incredible Tonkatsu Wako restaurant and started our journey off with one of our favorite meals of all time! We ate an awesome authentic grilled fish breakfast and stumbled into a revolving Sushi spot as a night cap!
The highlight of this one has got to be Tsumuji Tokyo, a place we are still trying to learn how to pronounce. We were treated to a traditional multi-course meal, served outside of a Buddhist temple, that knocked our socks clean off!
This video is just our humble, awkward introduction to Japan but this series is sure to be full of mouthwatering delights!

I'm an Englishman living in Japan and the way to eat food served with rice, including tonkatsu, is to put the tonkatsu in your mouth and eat the rice with it. If it's just rice, Westerners find it tasteless. Japanese people eat rice and tonkatsu and other dishes together. That way, you don't leave any rice behind. You guys seem to understand that very well.

@@HeresGoodTravel Thank you for your reply.I don't know if you guys felt it, but Japanese food can seem a bit salty. This is because the Japanese eat it with rice. In many cases, foods with strong flavours are prepared in such a way that they are just right when eaten with rice, rather than on their own. Pickles would be too salty if eaten on their own. Most Japanese food is designed to be eaten with rice. For reference.

I'm glad to hear you say that. Japan is an island country in the far east on world maps, so people perceive it as an unknown and mysterious country. The image people have around the world must be completely different from when they actually arrived. Tourists who come to Japan say they have come to a completely different planet.
The world and culture are also completely different. People from China and South Korea in the same Asian region are also surprised when they arrive in Japan.

Honestly we went a few different times and it NEVER disappointed! As foreign visitors we also found it to be relaxing and straightforward. Could not have started our trip off any better!

The 18:00 way to eat it is to put it on top of the porridge and eat it together.
Put the ingredients on top of the porridge and eat a little at a time.
It is probably egg tofu, but it is very soft, so hold the small plate with your hand and pour it into your mouth with chopsticks.
In Japan, the proper manner is to eat with the plate.
In Korea and China, it is the opposite.

Great video. I’m glad that you’re both adventurous and open minded about food. Btw in Japan it’s ok (even suggested) that you pick up the plates while eating. It’s hard (even for Japanese people) to pick up the soft tofu (hiyayakko) with chopsticks without holding the plate.

I love Wako for unlimited cabbage (by the way it’s called kyabetsu in Japanese which is very similar to cabbage , so if you say cabbage they’ll understand) ! when eating out, lack of fresh vegetables becomes issue, but at Wako you can have their cabbage as much as I like

I’m guessing it’s just the model of this particular chain. There are places like that in the U.S. such as Denny’s (which also exists in Japan).

Unlike other countries, it is good etiquette in Japan to hold a plate when eating. Tofu is soft, so it may be easier to eat it with a spoon.
That makes sense the next time we have such a delicate tofu, we will be sure to lift a bowl!

In the case of Japan, in the case of conveyor belt sushi, you should order from a tablet. Because it's fresh right after it's finished. Please judge that the rotating sushi is about a sample. Also, the price varies depending on the color of the plate. You need to pay attention to the budget.

They are quite familiar with the cheap eateries in Japan. Foreigners come to Japan and eat sushi, but Japanese people only eat sushi about once every three months. Anyway, you are trip is perfect!

Yes that makes so much sense! We ended up loving them by the end of our trip! Also drank our fair share of plum. Wine!😂. Honestly though that might be the most sour thing we’ve eaten on our trip around the world! We had a delicious sour soup in Romania that had a similar bite. That’s true the exchange rate is very favorable right now. There are definitely some things that are cheaper and some that are more expensive. Accommodations and flights are a bit pricy but once you’re here you can eat forever😂. Thanks a million for following our food journey!
Is wearing a mask still a must in some restaurants?
We visited when they dropped the mask band so in the beginning of our trip, there was a lot more masking towards the end not so much. Hardly anybody is masking anymore although it is not that rare to see somebody on the metro or somewhere else with a mask however, it’s not mandatory.
It's hay fever season in Japan, so many people wear masks, but you are free to wear them at restaurants and on trains.

We started our journey just when they stopped masking mandates. So our first couple videos we and others masked and later in the series the restrictions loosened! Many people are still masking but that has always been the case in Japan, far more people don’t wear them we would say. It was amazing when we didn’t have to wear them anymore but on cold days we would bust them out just for warmth lol.

Is the pandemic still going on in Japan?
We actually went twice and the first time was right when they stopped the masking requirement. It is still common for some Japanese to still wear mask in public places but it is no longer required.

We are very cheap but it can be pricy to get to Tokyo and to stay there but we find it to be pretty affordable once you’re there. Can’t wait to go back!

Rolled sushi topped with avocado is not sushi in Japan. You don't need a tip to pay, but 8% of food with consumption tax will be charged outside tax.
