I LOVE Houston's Freeways. Whenever they reconstruct the 285/400 interchange here in Atlanta, they really need to look to Houston to know what to do with an interchange. My favorite interchange in Houston is 290 at the Sam Houston Tollway. A true work of art
It's not that hard, just remember, all the ramps connect to something and if you mess up you can turn around at the next exit :) Personally I think these interchanges are works of art. The interchanged you referenced is really quite simple and there are many like it across the country, this one in particular is higher, bigger and more spread out than most but it's the same 4-level directional design that first showed up in Los Angeles in early 1950's.
To DanRyan55 the two most stressful freeways I've driven in this country were both in LA, the 101 Hollywood Freeway & Ventura Freeway and the 405 San Diego Freeway from Century City all the way down to the 110 in south central. Both are 10-12 lane freeways, but are always packed even during the middle of the day and on weekends, LA doesn't have enough freeway lane miles/people compared to other cities despite how many freeways they have and how wide they are
All these interchanges are giving me a craving for spaghetti (for obvious reasons), and the I-10/I-610 interchange looks even more badass since the Crosby Freeway was extended. ;-)
@mdepablo Thanks, I'm 100% certain that I have it properly marked, the aerial comes AFTER the in-car footage, the clip starting after that aerial is US-59S @ I-45.
I lived in Houston for a month. As a Floridian, I was really amazed by the HUGE stacks, the ongoing construction, and how wide I-10 is going to be. But I agree with aswchris, concrete highways are not really aesthetic. Not even the new ones.
I've only seen Texas in videos and I must say YOU did an awesome job! It's huge! I don't think I want to ever go there! Highway 10. OMG! That was just scary to me. It's just a maze of freeways. HUGE!
"Ramblin' Man" by Georgia's own Allman Brothers is one of my top "roadgeek tunes", Jim. Great job on the video and one of these days, we gotta collaborate. In the meantime, let me know if you want to be a guest on "GRG On BTR" again.
Jim, I am afraid that the footage at 1:25 is not the I-10 with US-59/US-90 as you show, but the I-45 with US-59. See the video "Houston,TX US59 Interchanges Stack City Part 2" from ScrewdUPClickV2 (2:40) for a comparison. Anyway, congratulations for your videos! Here you have a fan.
The freeways in the south for the most part are much newer, wider and more modern looking with the Springfield Interchange & Wilson bridge being the lone exceptions for the DC area. As for speeds, the south is faster but only because there is more congestion in the DC area, I've seen my share of crazy drivers up there.
You should come back to Houston and film the changes that have been made, including the Katy Freeway & the new Galveston Causeway. They are working on the interchange with I-45 and the NASA Parkway (also known as NASA Road 1), but so far most of the other road projects are complete in the Houston area... For now...
Fantastic clip! The DFW metro has even more stacks, like 19 or something in that range. Those Houston concrete freeways with their frontage roads are not very aesthetic though...
you missed two very very important parts of the area. the 610 east loop by the refineries and just 59 from down town to beltway 8. those are two very very nice spots. also the north houston i 45 stretch from the woodlands and the i 45 to galveston. hopefully ill get them and post them on here. good videos! and it wouldve been great if you filmed the baytown bridge.
I think you missed I-5 in Orange County, CA, that's pretty big from what I understand. I-85 & I-285 SW of Atlanta is 16 lanes for a few miles (I have a couple videos of it) From what I have heard that stretch of I-10 is 20 lanes, I have not seen it since it was finished.
OH MY goodness! Who was the ginus who came up with the idea At 3:18-3:33? Could they of made it any more complex? I am still trying to figure out what road went with what road. I couldn't imagine trying to exicute this at speed limit plus checking mirors plus changeing lanes plus reading signs and on top of it all you had a dam camera running.
lol i stupidly deleted it because i thought i posted them.. and i didnt.. -_- i think i still have some pics tho.. i may just make a slideshow. but its only around the neibor hood.. we had to save gas and go get MRE or something like that .. after you get use to not having power for 2 weeks and the heat.. it feels like you become different.. more adaptable..
thats a nice video.... i live in houston, and they are tryin to make the city nicer and add more landscaping. plus rebuild the inner city. suburbs are nice though :)
It is done. The entire Katy Freeway is complete with the HOV. The toll lanes, though physically there, are still being used as additional HOV lanes, officials with HCTRA & TxDOT are still trying to decide on pricing, whether or not they will use "congestion pricing", and how to charge only single-occupancy vehicles without charging those who are carpooling...
i live in houston and what can i say about our Highways there your typical big city freeways except a little more newer then some other cities and Houston has alot of very fast drivers along with the average medium ones
I am NOT missing Houston... you can get lost in those stacks. PS I read that the stack at the westside BW8 and 10 West was a replacement of an earlier stack interchange that they built in the 1980s.
Texas, we need to take a lesson from Missouri, and start posting mile markers every 0.2 miles, five per mile on interstates. Personally I would request congress to allow mile markers to be posted every tenth mile or two-tenth mile on interstates. If it were legal, I would spray paint numbers on the lamp posts every tenth mile for a mile stretch of I-10 in my city (El Paso)
Yes, Dallas is great, unfortunately when I was there (the following day after I filmed Houston) the weather did not cooperate and I did not get as much good footage as I'd like. I hope to get back there someday.
I LOVE Houston's Freeways. Whenever they reconstruct the 285/400 interchange here in Atlanta, they really need to look to Houston to know what to do with an interchange.

Very good video Jim, well done. Your productions get better and better every time. KUDOS.
It's not that hard, just remember, all the ramps connect to something and if you mess up you can turn around at the next exit :)

Houston is gorgeous, nowadays many more roads and interchanges are being built.
Once again - nice job jim - each video keeps getting better!

Excellent. The best freeway vid I've come across on TH-cam. Great job!
All these interchanges are giving me a craving for spaghetti (for obvious reasons), and the I-10/I-610 interchange looks even more badass since the Crosby Freeway was extended. ;-)

Sorry, No San Antonio or Austin videos, I regret not filming those cities when I was there in 2007.
I lived in Houston for a month. As a Floridian, I was really amazed by the HUGE stacks, the ongoing construction, and how wide I-10 is going to be. But I agree with aswchris, concrete highways are not really aesthetic. Not even the new ones.
RAMBLIN' MAN!
I love this song, set to my town.
From what I understand the section of I-10 from Houston to Katy is the largest since the recent construction was completed.
Watching this video made me feel like I was driven home from work already. WOW!
I've only seen Texas in videos and I must say YOU did an awesome job! It's huge! I don't think I want to ever go there! Highway 10. OMG! That was just scary to me. It's just a maze of freeways. HUGE!
Those are nice interchanges in my favorite city in Texas
My personal favorite interchange is from the Galleria(West Loop northbound) onto 290...
To me our most impressive one is the Beltway 8 + I-10 interchange west of Downtown. It's no Dallas High Five, but it definitely is a monster.
I did film the Baytown (Hartman bridge)
Those interchanges just happened to be where I was going, this video was not planned, so to speak.
Thanks, I did not get a chance to film the whole city, I was only there from 7AM to Noon.
@keetonplace I recently filmed it in HD (Both directions) check my newer videos.
"Ramblin' Man" by Georgia's own Allman Brothers is one of my top "roadgeek tunes", Jim.

Thanks, Dallas is similar as well, They build 'em big in Texas!
Thanks for the great video!
Nice song and nice video . I 've gone through those roads & interchanges.
The freeways in the south for the most part are much newer, wider and more modern looking with the Springfield Interchange & Wilson bridge being the lone exceptions for the DC area. As for speeds, the south is faster but only because there is more congestion in the DC area, I've seen my share of crazy drivers up there.
@HelmutVillam Not that I'm aware of, it could use an overhaul, some of the exits and entrances are dangerous!
You should come back to Houston and film the changes that have been made, including the Katy Freeway & the new Galveston Causeway. It's a full day's drive, I've only done it once and took alot of detours along the way.
@Freewayjim You are right! I thought the order was aerial->footage.
oh ok. i love your atlanta videos man i wanna drive over there. you got any san antonio videos? austin?
@Jean1juan No, just moving very slow.
Thanks, much appreciated!
I don't have the particulars but I would say yes in both cases.
@cherubina -No, not really, they are much safer than the 1950's style cloverleafs seen in many older cities.
I was born and raised in Houston. Because of business, I have to live elsewhere, but I'll always be a Houstonian.
If I ever get down that way I probably would film those roads.
the skyline looks the best coming from i10 east into downtown, or the north freeway headed south.
I don't think they are clearance signs, I drove on one of the big ramps earlier and I just can't recall what it's for :(
@mdepablo Looking back, I probably should have done it that way in the first place.
@durtyEmpire Thank you!
It's in the credits.
@musoderelict Thank you!,
Great video Freewayjim
btw. How long do you drive from Atlanta to Houston
Yes and it should be done by now if not close to being done.
I think you missed I-5 in Orange County, CA, that's pretty big from what I understand.
I-85 & I-285 SW of Atlanta is 16 lanes for a few miles (I have a couple videos of it)
From what I have heard that stretch of I-10 is 20 lanes, I have not seen it since it was finished.
man houston sure has a lot of pretty ramps
:D
freewayjim, how are the freeways in the south like as opposed to the interstate highways around the washington D.C. area. average speeds, width, etc.
@Freewayjim at 1:27 to 1:34, were those cars standing still
Thanks, I'm working at it.
OH MY goodness! Who was the ginus who came up with the idea At 3:18-3:33? Could they of made it any more complex? I am still trying to figure out what road went with what road.

the wall of towers at 3:00 is staggering.
(so youtube does the deep linking automatically... first time for everything)
The end melody of the song reminds me of top gear,
I love the I 10 to I 45 interchange
The US-59/I-45 may look impressive from the ground but its also showing its age badly, any plans for it to be renovated or rebuilt?
I have a question is high five in Dallas taller and bigger than then I-45 beltway 8 interchange.
@valeria333able It's a classic, but probably before your time. That's OK, I can't please everyone.
Well I don't live there and the footage was filmed in 2007. It is what it is.
So.. got any film just after ike??
I-45 to beltway 8 ftw! I do that monday through friday mornings and afternoons! lol
boy how many times i have traveled 45s we are moving back to houston june 1st
@Bigmark902: I did, check my other videos, this fuckin tourist too I-45 to the North 610 Loop
Thanks :)
@Freewayjim Thanks, I will.
Atlanta's freeways are fairly new as well but our biggest interchanges would be about average compared to Houston's.
You have to play one of their songs if you ever record a tape through Macon, that's where the Allman Brothers are from.
This remindes me of parts of the Metropolitan Expressway in Tokyo.
lol i stupidly deleted it because i thought i posted them.. and i didnt.. -_- i think i still have some pics tho.. i may just make a slideshow. but its only around the neibor hood.. we had to save gas and go get MRE or something like that .. after you get use to not having power for 2 weeks and the heat.. it feels like you become different.. more adaptable..
Bellissimo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome
thats a nice video.... i live in houston, and they are tryin to make the city nicer and add more landscaping. plus rebuild the inner city. suburbs are nice though :)
Hello,
can i take your video and put it on my account? i would change the music if so... thank you
Update I10 (Katy Freeway) and this will be great! It's a monster freeway now.
woooooow its cool°°°°°!!!! thanks
I agree jandabrock
It is done. The entire Katy Freeway is complete with the HOV. What is the title of this song?
Ramblin Man by the Allman Brothers from 1973
Freewayjim another great Allman Brothers song for traveling is Jessica
razorvol yes, I am very much aware of that song.
Houston is more impressive from a freeway standpoint but I think Atlanta is a much nicer city overall.
love it

I actually thought I-75 was pretty nice compared to the FL Turnpike. It's smoother and wider, and toll-less.
I love houston
shit me too but im moving today!!! it sucks i don't wanna leave GEORGIA!
Yes, Dallas is great, unfortunately when I was there (the following day after I filmed Houston) the weather did not cooperate and I did not get as much good footage as I'd like. I hope to get back there someday.
the five stack is not for the faint of heart
Maybe but houston is way more populated and important to our country!!!
Anyways were like the king of interchanges and sports stadiums!!!
HOUSTON'SSSS FOREVER
damn i live in H-TOWN
Born and raise in The H.
this is OLD, before the construction
Houston or Dallas
I like Dallas better but it's not an indictment of Houston.
Nope, it would have been unwatchable.
Really american highway !!!
That place is not all that exicting.. please.. san diego and los angeles probably have a similar look...
