I reluctantly pulled about ten plants yesterday and this video confirms that it was the right move. Stunted growth. Curly leaves. No blossoms. And spreading. Extended early rains. And a fairly large presence of the leaf hopper bug which I had no clue was capable of spreading this virus. I still have a separate area of tomato plants that are doing well, so I am still hopeful. Thanks for the knowledge.

My wife feels relief after watching your video. She has 15 tomato seedlings in red cups (per your planting style), waiting for our nighttime temps to get warm enough for planting. Some of the tomatoes have leaf curl, and I'm sure now it's due to wind and our arid climate. Thanks so much for your help with this Brian!

My curly leaf is at the top only, and it curls under. A week or so ago, we had a hail and strong wind storm, and it damaged a lot of leaves... before that they were healthy and proud. Overnight I saw holes and stress in the larger lower leaves, and they are browning around the edges of the holes. Shortly after, I got curly top on the one plant. I had been spraying with neem oil weeks before it happened. Well, I moved all my plants in buckets further under the pergola and seperated them more. Shade cloth is going up before it hits 90, and it's going up to high 90's today. Thanks for all the timely info!
Glad you are feeling better. Beach sand and sunshine and sound of the surf, all great therapy!

Thanks Brian. You have just taken a load off my mind with your explanation of the causes of leaf roll. I had so much last year with thick stems and leathery leaves, I was sure the plant would die, however it didn’t effect production. Can’t wait for tomato season again here in Australia. I’m going to concentrate on making chunky salsa this time as my larder is full of last seasons sauce and paste.

Your tomatoes are growing so tall in the background. Love it!
I am growing tomatoes like you now, b/c of you. I made my posts by making teepees with wood, 8 feet tall wood, put in ground about 8 inches, and tied the three posts together with string to pull them towards the soil and provide a more secure post. I connected two posts with another 8 foot piece of wood. (I’m using roller hooks, though.).

I watched your youtube a couple months ago and combined your idea (stringing my tomatoes up) with a 20 gallon wicking tub (Leon from OK--it waters the plants from the bottom up and give oxygen & water to the plants roots as the water is wicked up to the roots). It was going beautifully until it wasn't! I first noticed end rot. I used tums ground up and added to the plant and that took care of the problem but right after that I think I ended up with possibly "blight" (all the leaves on the bottoms of the plants-then all of them were brown and "crunchy") but the blight really couldn't be stopped. I started a brand new wicking tub but left the old one "growing" because it had a bunch of tomatoes on it but they are only ripening one tomato at a time and not very sweet. I watched this video because one of the 3 tomato plants in my NEW wicking tub had some curling leaves. It has been pretty warm here in CA (end of Aug) so I think I am going to be ok according to this video..so thanks for that!.
But I am so discouraged with trying to grow tomatoes. I'm so afraid something is going to get these new tomatoes too! I guess I should take down the first tub of tomatoes as they are not really growing and the tomatoes are ripening so slowly and not tasty really. The tubs are about 12 feet from each other. I am writing this in hopes those who read this might have some suggestions or encouragements as I really am frustrated and just want to have good tasting tomatoes!! Thanks in advance!

I was waiting for this video. The patio tomato plant in a container has curled leaves and now I know why thanks to you: the past two super windy days and dry climate. Other than that, the plant is green, flowering, and quite happy under the shade tree with diffused light. The two tomato plants planted a week ago into the soil, are taking off and loving the partial shade of a nectarine tree. I'm finding that even citrus grows better in our semi desert climate, in partial shade. They don't like to get sunburned! Thank you, my kindred spirit.

Keeping my fingers crossed as the temps are going to be better starting tonight.

I'm experimenting growing tomatoes otr than tiny tims for the very first time & my only plant I have going leaves are all curling. I got worried thinking i'm doing something wrong. I figured maybe its too hot (I live in the Caribbean & right now temps are between 84°/85°). Got on here & what popped up as a suggested video! I now realize I have 2 of the issues you mention, the heat & the wind. Thanks a mil Brian👍

Thank you Brian. I have been stressing this week over that leaf curl, but we’ve just had a few really hot days here in UK, and then yesterday such a strong wind. I am using a moisture measure as I can’t stand not knowing what is going on deep down those grow bags. I try to keep the soil moist not wet. I got excited when I saw my little plants shoot indoors in winter. I never realised what a lot of work this would be. OMG - Stressful.

Brain, just got my toms planted in pots 6/01. We are suffering from 85 - 90 days lately. I've covered the patch with shade and that helps the poor babies from wilting. I mixed up a good nutritional soil mix this year and I have babied the seedlings from the start. If we don't get a hail storm later this month I expect a decent crop here in zone 4a. Cheers, friend. Which are not doing it. The EG was kind of doing it a week ago when it was really hot. It’s also shorter than the other two and all were planted at the same time! I installed a shade cloth yesterday. My daughter is a young and new veggie gardener and last summer had several tomato plants with thick leathery upward curling leaves. The plants grew and produced sparsely, but the leaves remained curled most all of the St. Louis summer . No browning or yellowing found. At first we were concerned that perhaps some nearby Bermuda grass (aughhhhh, can't stand that grass!!) that had been treated with Round UP, had wind drift of the chemical, but my hub said he was very careful of that issue. Most all of the leaves of the plants were upward curled along the edges only. From this video, I am thinking it was a watering issue. Missouri is known for its clay soil, and while we tried to work the soil, my guess is that it wasn't good enough. Thanks for an informative video (again) and we're looking forward to a better crop this summer 2021!!

Great video. In Florida, the TYLC is normally spread by White Fly. It’s the worst. The only solution I found was growing resistant varieties like Big Beef and of course controlling the flies. Extreme pruning helps keep fly populations down too.

  • @kathrynkij5979

It’s such a funny coincidence that you are just posting this video, because I’ve been working this past week on bringing my tomato’s back from herbicide exposure. I figured out through lots of research that the cow manure compost I bought and layered through all my containers and bed was contaminated with herbicide. So my friend’s mom, who runs a community greenhouse, told me to report them in fresh soil and compost, and to dig out around the top of the ones in the bed and full it back in with fresh compost and used worm castings at the base of the plant. So far it’s actually working and they are coming back! 😄 and since they are indeterminates, I left the top sucker just in case the top doesn’t come back I can at least grow a new lead.

Thanks so much. One of my tomato plants has curled leaves... But they are going downward & under, not upward. I just watered well and will check inn the morning to see if it's feeling better!

One of my 4 tomato plants had leaf curls and decided to let it go last week 😞but now the one next to it looks like the leaves are starting to curl. I’m really hoping this is due to multiple high winds we had. It will be more sad if this is viral, but hope to harvest something then I’d be happy. Thanks for this video- lots of great information.

It's possible it could be the wind. Don't give up 🙂

California Garden TV - Advice for All Climates ... Thank you! Hopeful... considering we had hail twice and high winds -the veggies survived except for one. Funny, I’m a new subscriber and happen to watch @CaliKim’s video on her book release and you were in attendance! You both have great channels.
