I have to admit I just found your channel 2 days ago and it has quickly become my favorite channel on TH-cam! You are a great narrator and always accurate to the historical truth. And always about the stuff I like! Thank you, sir.
Billy is a hero,he stood up to the very worst elements who were being aided by felonious law enforcement. Billy stood by his friends and Billy is a great example of someone forced into a life of crime. Corrupt law enforcement and government officials ruined many lives. Billy was the scapegoat for the Lincoln Co. War, who else was indicted? Viva Billy!
Either that OR Billy was just a Psychopath, who needed little reason, if any, to Kill. Or somewhere in the middle. Walter Noble Burns is the author that started the Mythologizing of Billy The Kid, portraying him to be, not unlike, Robin Hood, in the same way that John Newman Edwards did to romanticize Jesse James. Both were successful in their attempts, and made a few bucks in the process Edwards helped make Jesse Famous while he was still alive. Billy was well known locally & in NM Territory, but it was only after his death that Burns did the same for Billy......Who undoubtedly would have Loved It, but didn't live to enjoy his new found fame.
Man your billy the kid series is excellent! Very informative info even if you already know the story you can always learn something new from it it seems
Josh, keep doing what you are doing, it's great. I've never thought that you had any negative feelings about Billy so I think that the issue is with the person (or people) who think that you do. Some people just want to hear what they want to hear
Love your channel! My dad and I are going to New Mexico tomorrow for a few days. Going to visit Ft. Sumner, Lincoln, White Oaks, and the site of John Tunstall's murder near Glencoe. I've been listening to your stories all week getting amped up for the trip. Thanks for the great videos!!!
I too have just subscribed and I have to say that the historical narrative, coupled with the lively contemporary banter, is simply outstanding. Keep up the good work. 😅
John Middleton was John Tunstall's favorite. He wrote home to England regularly and Middleton was mentioned in detail and very fondly. John Tunstall was likely asleep in the saddle when he was confronted. He had been making legal arrangements and filing documentation in Ft. Sumner(?) and elsewhere. He he covered some 150 miles in 3 days on horseback and was exhausted. Middleton was yelling at him and he was unresponsive until too late, woke up confused, and saw his killers, whom he attempted to approach waving to them, and was immediately shot. Buckshot supposedly could not raise his right arm much above chest level. He knew if he surrendered he would not live much longer and he was probably right. One of the kids who lived at the Mill said that big buffalo rifle that killed Dick Brewer was at the house for many years and he would shoot it for fun and could never hit anything with it.
This channel was a suggestion, and it couldn't have been better! I have been pulling up to the extravaganza trough every day! Must add, "Someone not named AB shooting me with a fake gun" almost knocked me outta my chair 😂 Excellent content sir!
Hey josh. On the topic of billy the kid. All Thanks to garrett at 11bangbang. i finally have a 1873 winchester in my collection. It was Made in 1883. Also we really need to get you into shooting old west guns. really makes you appreciate the abilities and talents of the people we love to learn about from the old west.
Great video as always Josh. Really enjoying this series on Billy The Kid. Do you still plan on doing a video on Doc Scurlock? I have wondered if anyone has done any videos on other Regulators of their lives before and after the Lincoln County War, I haven't been able to find much on Dirty Steve Stevens, but just thought that Jose Chavez y Chavez or Charlie Bowdre or Dick Brewer might make interesting videos.
Thank you! I sent out a newsletter a few days ago all about Doc after the Lincoln County war but I haven't decided if I'll record it. I'll probably do an episode on Henry Newton Brown in the future.
@Wild West Extravaganza oh cool that should definitely be an interesting episode. In Young Guns 2 for some reason they combined his name with Jim French to make the character Hendry William French. Kinda always wondered why they did that.

Epic Album... used to play it every morning in my twenntys as soon as I would wake up . Need to start doing that again, nothing like kicking off the day hearing emilio estevez say YooHoo, ill make you famouse" and then Billy Get your guns kicks in lol
Hey Josh. It's Ben from Billy the Kid's Historical Coalition. I'm loving the work you're putting in & it was great talking with you last week. For all the listeners who heard this podcast, one of the Dolan posse members who testified that Tunstall's weapon was fired after he was killed, was none other than John Wallace Olinger- Bob's brother.
I'm gonna have to go back to Lincoln after I finish this series 😁 have you ever gone? The whole area is full of Texans every summer lol Thanks for the great podcast Josh! We all preciate cha!
Good narration. AS far of what is in Lincoln. There are still a few original building I have walked the beautiful little town a couple of times and driven through it several over the last 3 years. The Murphy Dolan store, Tunstall's store there is another couple of buildings too. One of the round clay brick structures they held natives back in. Tunstall and McSween are buried out back of the store. They have Billy's Mother's grave marker in the old Murphy Dolan store. Now if you want the best New Mexico Cheese Burger I have ever had it is in Fort Sumner at the Daily Grind. And the Billy the Kid Museum is worth a walk through. There are a lot of interesting thins in there not just stuff on Billy the Kid
I always thought Tunstall was injured, disarmed and alive when his horse was shot in front of him, he then crawled to his horse whilst being mocked and was executed with his own revolver. Good documentary keep up the good work!
Your comment around 9:15 punched me in my nostalgia gut. My best friend and I would play Young Guns when we were kids. He was Billy and I I was Chavez flipping and throwing knife shaped sticks I found in the yard. Though the Young Guns 2 soundtrack is most certainly not he best collection of songs it is still one of my favorite albums and 'Santa Fe' is one of my favorite songs to this day.
Josh let me know u ever get to lincoln man iad love to show u some of the things most people don't get to see. Some of the ranches and hide out. Family been here 7 generations know my way around Lincoln a bit lol.
I can resite both movies word for word and don't even need to be in the room lol and still have the sound track on vinyl cassette and CD even in my mix on my phone lol
Quick question. You said that you wondered why Tunstall's men didn't go after the posse that killed him at the scene. Wasn't there something like 15 total men in the posse that was chasing after them before the sub posse broke off after Tunstall? I am just saying... if they knew that they were that outnumbered, I could totally understand not storming in after them.
I believe the reason the Murphy Dolan faction was going broke was the same way it happens today. The Santa Fe ring was taken to big of a share and likely wanted it increased.
There was a lot to the feud. The.Lawrence Murphy, James Dolan, John Riley, and Sheriff William Brady Faction were mostly Irish Catholics and Democrats. They detested Englishman, agnostic, and "Republican" John Tunstall, Scottish-Canadian Presbyterian Alexander McSween, and Tennessee-born English, Scottish, and Welsh John Chisum,. Religion and political affiliations played a big role, whether real or perceived by one faction or the other.
Question, do we know where John Tunstill's grave is, if so he could be exhumed & a forensic study done of the injuries to determine the cause & manner of death.
No one knows where exactly tunstall is buried. It's behind his store somewhere along with mcsween but it's private land and the onwers aren't interested in looking into it which is sad
Did I hear you say you've never been to Lincoln? Take a week or ten days and make a big loop around the state. Lincoln to Ft Sumner to Santa Ross on on to Springer Cimmarron Toas over to Chama Farmington back to Santa Fe Alque circle back to Lincoln Roswell. Great history.

I remember reading the authentic life of billy the kid by par garret back in high school (a little over 30 years ago so my memory may be wrong) but I thought I remembered a part in there where a regulator maybe Salazar in which you mentioned) played dead. After everything was done do,an and party celebrated as you said with Salazar still playing dead. The story went on, again if I recall correctly, that some of the men even took pop shots at the dead bodies including Salazar, who just laid there and took it. I remember being so amazed by that. In the end the story went on saying once the men cleared out Salazar got up and crawled away where he would seek medical attention. I read that and was like damn dude was a warrior! Now until your video I always thought the man in the book was named Chavez, not THE Chavez, just another one named Chavez, but hearing you say Salazar that might have been the name. As I said I read it over 30 years ago but I have never heard anyone tell the story of this man. You were the closest saying how he pretended to be dead. Anyway maybe it’s all a myth, I never really know what’s the truth when it comes to Billy the Kid, but damn what good stories it makes.
Maybe they just have different levels of anger in New Mexico. Stage 1: peeved Stage 2: chicken out and run Stage 3: form a posse Stage 4: shoot horses Stage 5: chicken out in a general goods store Stage 6: shoot random people in the butt or leg, butt preferred Stage 7: call for backup in the least effectual manner possible, not to be confused with chicken out maneuvers Stage 8 and 9: commence hanging
Love your podcasts! Great research! Appreciate your objective view on billy. It helps keep what was true And fabricated. I believe in billy as a hero but you help many if us find the truth. Love ya! Keep up the awesome work.
Appreciate you, Josh. Always give me something good to listen to at work on Wednesday morning. Do you think John Kinney could possibly be a candidate for some future content?
@@WildWestExtravaganza Yeah, people seemed to be a little more prone to knee jerk reactions back then that involved a whole town, county or territory! Lol!
YG3 (“Alias Billy The Kid”) Is unofficially slated to start filming in this coming August. I don’t know where but will let you know if I find out. Really Enjoy your videos. Still not sold on “Because PG Said so” theory. Mainly because I don’t want it to be true. (Why speak to Maxwell 2 strangers & a shadow in Spanish at least twice?)
You gonna read for it? I’m excited for it to finally happen! Thankfully we don’t have to rely on the word of Pat Garrett. Trust me, I don’t know any historians who don’t have issues with Garrett’s version of events. There are many unanswered questions. That said, there were many eyewitness other than Garrett. A lot of these people lived for decades and were interviewed by journalists and historians and some of them even wrote their own books. Not a single person who was at Fort Sumner in 1881 even so much as hinted at Billy’s death being a hoax. I’m hoping to do an episode on it in the next two weeks addressing many of the popular misconceptions concerning the Kid’s death.
@@WildWestExtravaganza I told my manager to flag it if it comes up. Even just BG I have the benefit of being a better than intermediate horse rider, with stunt training. Plus I weld plenty of that “Old West” type of ugly. It would be a dream to do ANY western. YG3? I’d be satisfied with my career. (Still need a Star Wars Credit too) As to the rest… I don’t like that you make the BBR argument null & void. I’m researching myself mainly because I want to believe it. Which you admitted to yourself in the first video I saw of yours. Curious: Have you been watching the MGM show? Billy The Kid? I’ve been enjoying it. Except the most resent episode. They showed what I believe is a more historical accurate depiction of what went down at MCS ESQ’s house. (Aside from that little tongue kiss in the woods between Jessie & Billy.) It bummed me out. Probably because there was no flying luggage ambush with Estivez. lol. Col Dudley was Court Marshaled was he not? So many parts of this time fascinate me. I want to believe BTK was virtuous etc. But Earth seldom works that way. If you want to see it first you have to be it I suppose.
@@Actor_Brendan_Crash_Burt No sir, I haven't seen it yet. I've heard a lot of good things, though. As far as Brushy is concerned, once you start to dig into the story it's really a no-brainer. Keep in mind there's zero actual evidence supporting any of his claims. It's all just anecdotal stories.
@@WildWestExtravaganza I highly recommend it. The more I research the less cred I can give BBR. It is at best circumstantial evidence that is so easy to forget came from Morison. I wish they would allow the DNA to be studied. Because I don’t feel we have the real story. But again that’s the imaginative part of me that always needs an intellectual bone to chew on. (I was convinced the real life Paul McCartney died in 1963 because the only evidence to the contrary was “That’s ridiculous.” I still want to believe Courtney had Kurt killed. And that JFK was killed by Dom DiMaggio in Houston with a candlestick. One of these days I’ll find a real one. Just learned about the workbench. That should keep me occupied for a bit.
@@WildWestExtravaganza I’m sorry to keep bothering you. You have the misfortune of being somebody’s whose opinion I respect. I have never heard anything about John Miller (until this week) as another possible guy who escaped recorded history. Is there any validity to the claim that he is BTK? I figured you could save me the trouble of going down another rabbit hole chasing a theory I more want to believe than the facts actually allow to be possible. Again I appreciate you keeping one foot in reality so the rest of us dreamers can enjoy our speculations. And I really enjoy your channel. (As I hope I’ve mentioned already.)
I was in Fort Sumner a week ago. Sad. We were the only people there, and everything else was either closed or blocked to the public. Still, it was really cool.
Why has Jessie Evans never been in any movies regarding Billy? Majority of the documentaries I've heard that you have done regarding Billy, Jesse is mentioned but he has never been in any of his movies. Why is that?
@@WildWestExtravaganza idk, I mean wouldn't they just take the whole revolver with empty shells and all? BTW, I hope you get the part as an extra in Young Guns 3. It be awesome if they had old west fans help instead of the usually Hollywood types.
Joshin' Josh is a joshin josher & SoBe Dennis, Quaker sniper. "...Sir, i would not harm a hair on thy head, but thou art standin where i am about to shoot!..." (everbody else just heard BLAM!)
It is my understanding the tension between Attorney at Law McSween and Dolan had to do with proceeds for a life insurance claim that McSween was hired to collect for Dolan, and for which never were paid to Dolan.
@@WildWestExtravaganza Thanks for the reply. We have traveled throughout New Mexico. The central highland area is lovely country. The historic district of Lincoln is very well preserved.
We know how to shoot in missouri. I still carry 6 back powder pistols on my bushwhacker vest and rein my horse around with my teeth so I can shoot with both hands.
@@WildWestExtravaganzaI don't remember exactly but I've seen it several times. Given the time and place, I think he meant that he was generally treated like a Mexican. He was closely associated with the Mexican community, and they were treated like second class citizens in Lincoln.
Yea I heard that many times . 😅 But I guess cause he vagrant , homeless so he was being treated like 3rd class citizen like Mexican at that time I guess

@@WildWestExtravaganza Yeah, people seemed to be a little more prone to knee jerk reactions back then that involved a whole town, county or territory! Lol!
For sure
(Still need a Star Wars Credit too)
As to the rest… I don’t like that you make the BBR argument null & void.
Why was it closed?
@@WildWestExtravaganza not sure. If didn’t appear to be permanent, just locked doors. It was on a Saturday too, which was surprising.
You didn't mention that the John Wayne movie, Chisholm, although not accurate, was also based on this subject.
I didn’t mention a lot of movies
Why has Jessie Evans never been in any movies regarding Billy? Majority of the documentaries I've heard that you have done regarding Billy, Jesse is mentioned but he has never been in any of his movies. Why is that?
Probably because movies have to be condensed down to 90 minutes whereas my series on the kid is 4 hours long.
Who wins in a fight between The Regulators and The Wolverines?
The Wolverines had Ak's!
@@WildWestExtravaganza that is a game changer.
Have you listened to Brett Halls research ?
I've seen some of his stuff

Nice Goodfellas reference
Why would empty shells be recovered?
Collectibles?
@@WildWestExtravaganza idk, I mean wouldn't they just take the whole revolver with empty shells and all?
BTW, I hope you get the part as an extra in Young Guns 3. It be awesome if they had old west fans help instead of the usually Hollywood types.
Open Range is one of the best westerns ever made. Greatest shootout scenes. Watch it or I’ll make you famous.
It's a good one
My cousin Beverly had few silent parts in Kris N Coburn and Bobby 73 great movie
Very cool
Steve Steven's also played for Billy Idol.. 😂
Joshin' Josh is a joshin josher & SoBe Dennis, Quaker sniper. "...Sir, i would not harm a hair on thy head, but thou art standin where i am about to shoot!..." (everbody else just heard BLAM!)
Who's puckering? I'm not puckering. I'm as clean as a Safeway chitlin.
Failing to go to Lincoln and Fort Sumner is a serious failing on your part Josh, you don't know what your missing.
I'd go today if I could sprout wings and fly
It is my understanding the tension between Attorney at Law McSween and Dolan had to do with proceeds for a life insurance claim that McSween was hired to collect for Dolan, and for which never were paid to Dolan.
Yes but the life insurance was for Fritz, Murphy's old partner.
@@WildWestExtravaganza Thanks for the reply. We have traveled throughout New Mexico. The central highland area is lovely country. The historic district of Lincoln is very well preserved.
@@SchoolBusTalk I'm really hoping to visit one day
You had me at "not named Alec Baldwin". I literally spit coke cola out of my mouth. Q
Watch your language,I got virgin ears!🤣
We know how to shoot in missouri. I still carry 6 back powder pistols on my bushwhacker vest and rein my horse around with my teeth so I can shoot with both hands.
I have never known anyone from Missouri who could shoot
@Wild West Extravaganza me and Jesse James. Now you know 2 😆
Did you see the size of that chicken?
LMAO!
I wish Hollywood would get it right just once.
They need to make money so that will never happen
Hear that Davie was a tick to a flee that was billy
I heard after he got out of prison, Chavez went to California and worked in produce fields. Don't know if it's true or not.
All those names made my butt hole pucker. 😅
Had to watch twice.
“Dear Governor Ax-tail!”
“Axtell”
“Right! Dear Governor Axtell”
You either know or you don’t!😂😂

Hey Pepin I hear you got charlie crawford down there wit ya, ya we gat all........🔫💣
hey pepin, charlie crawford aint wit ya know more is he!
I don't know how close Tunstall and Billy were, but at some point, Billy did say that Tunstall was the only man that treated him like he was white.
Where'd you read that?
@@WildWestExtravaganzaI don't remember exactly but I've seen it several times. Given the time and place, I think he meant that he was generally treated like a Mexican. He was closely associated with the Mexican community, and they were treated like second class citizens in Lincoln.
Yea I heard that many times . 😅 But I guess cause he vagrant , homeless so he was being treated like 3rd class citizen like Mexican at that time I guess
It's usually true that history is written by the Victor's, but in this case the Victor's doesn't seem to deny much because of the light there painted in.
Josh look up Julia Lonergan Rodriguez. Her book (The Secret Life of Billy the kid) she talks about the people you don't hear about. She says Charles Beaubien Maxwell is( Charlie Bowdre) and Billy the kid was a woman, 5'2" tall with red curly hair. And maybe blue eyes. She is miss Mary Mack all dressed in black. I beleave her I research some of her stuff.
No offense but I’m not interested
Narrator sounds like Danny McBride 😅
