    My all time favorite show. John razenburger auditioned for the role of Norm, realised that he didn't make the cut.He then asked the producers if they had a know it all smart ass for the bar.They said no, and the he launched into his cliff Calvin persona.They liked it so much they created the character for John.

    This scene was already a scream, but Cliff trying to shoot the doctor -- "Let's see how you like it, pal!" -- makes it absolutely legendary.

      The first time I saw this episode, I think I laughed so hard I couldn’t get my breath, at which time I fell on the floor. Stomach hurt for quite awhile. This was the best! What great memories. Nothing today comes close to being good, let alone great.

    • @Fakeaorta
      @Fakeaorta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      No matter how brilliant this was written, Mr. John Ratzenberger committed fully to the scene and made it an A+ memory!

      @kevino4846 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Fakeaorta, you nailed it. This scene fails without his great skills. He is my personal favorite character on the show. When you see John Ratzenberger interviewed as just his normal self, you can see that he created and owned that character, who is nothing like him in real life. Just as Carroll O'Connor did with Archie Bunker. It's just great acting.

    • @Fakeaorta
      @Fakeaorta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@kevino4846 And to think the writers and producers didn't have a Cliff character. John asked them at the audition as he was leaving if the had a "Know it all" character. They said "no". Then he showed them and got hired on the spot!

    Give props for John’s physical comedic chops! He really sold that jittery robot shuffle.
    I can’t imagine how his knees and ankles must have felt like after. You know they had to rehears, and do multiple takes from multiple camera angles to get that scene, that perfect.
    Plus look how spooky-fast he is on his reactions to the single shocks. Wow!

    I met John Ratzenberger at a beautiful resort country club that was hosting a Jim Beam anniversary celebration that was interesting and a lot of fun.

He told some funny stories and we had a few laughs and my sister n I both got to actually have a Cheers with him! The actual scene where the old guy has the button and says,” dance, mailman” is on Hulu. Took some searching

    Cliff reminds of of an IT manager I worked with in a company back in the 1990s. His pseudo-brainiac persona; his flawed logic/sensibilities; and having an overbearing/obnoxious temperament were strikingly similar to the Cliff Clavin character.

    I heard somewhere that this was John Ratzenberger’s favorite scene as Cliff.

    Shame they couldn’t include the old codger’s line at the end of the show. IIRC: “Dance Mailman!”

    I was today years old when I learned that none other than the OG Pixarman himself, JOHN RATZENBERGER, portrayed Cliff.
