Beard Oil. You see it everywhere, but what is it? How do you use it and do you need it?
In this video, I give you answers to these questions and more as I’ve brought with me several beard oils from top brands such as Cremo, Wild Willies, Honest Amish and Mountaineer Brand.
Beard oil is a conditioner for your facial hair and the underlying skin. Our bodies naturally produce oil to help keep our skin and hair moisturized, but sometimes we strip these oils through cleansing and through the natural passage of time as our hair grows longer.
Essentially, this dries out our skin, which can lead to itchiness, flaky skin, split-ends, beard dandruff and other irritations.
With beard oil, we’re adding back that lost moisture to keep the hair and skin refreshed and hydrated and help stop these issues.
The days after a shave are times when most of us feel that itchy beard irritation set in. Since the beard hair is coarse, as it grows long enough and curls back, it pokes into the skin causing this irritation. When this occurs, beard oil can help over time by softening the hairs, thus reducing this discomfort.
If you take a look at the ingredients list on a bottle of beard oil, you most likely will come across items such as Argan Oil, Jojoba oil, Sunflower Oil and Avocado Oil, as well as several seed and nut oils.
Every beard brand has created its own unique combination of ingredients for its beard oil, natural, organic, or otherwise. These beard oil ingredients have unique properties that help to hydrate and refresh the skin underneath your beard and put the moisture back into your facial hair.
For application, simply rub the beard oil in the palm of your hand, work it into the skin up and down, and finish by shaping your beard to its normal everyday look.
As far as when to use beard oil, it is generally used once daily. However, depending on oil evaporation, beard oil can be used as many times as the individual desires.
Most brands recommend using beard oil after a hot shower, when the pores of the skin have opened up. This is preferred, but some brands also indicate that you may apply after rinsing your face in the sink or directly onto a dry beard.
Overall, beard oil is a great option for helping your beard stay refreshed, hydrated and healthy. You will look and feel great and people will notice a positive difference in your beard.
I highly recommend you pick up a bottle of one of these affordable brands and at least test it out to see what you think. You may be surprised by the experience! Good Luck!
Beard Oil Tip: Keep your beard oil at a distance when placing drops in your hand. You don’t want to get beard oil onto your clothing, as this will mostly likely ruin it and not come out.

Good tips. Thank you. Once applied with the hands, should a (wooden) beard comb be used to help make uniform the oil throughout the beard (or goatee on my case)? I know that wooden beard combs, such as the Percy Nobleman and Milkman (available here in Australia at least), must not be exposed to moisture. Cheers.

Hi, Meshwork123. You are most welcome! Thanks for the positive feedback. The use of a wooden beard comb is a great choice. After applying beard oil with your hands, the wooden beard comb can actually go in an collect unevenly distributed oils on the wood and redistribute them evenly throughout the hair follicles of your beard. This gives consistent coverage with your beard oil each time you use for maximum benefit. As you mentioned, the wooden beard comb should avoid exposure to water (and sunlight in some cases). Moisture can cause swelling of the wood overtime and even splintering. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and being a member of the GroomReviews community!

GroomReviews Thanks, Paul. That makes a lot of sense: wood affected by water exposure. The oil I guess should also help preserve the wood. I’ll give my Percy Nobleman oil a shot. Cheers. Dave, Australia.

Hi, Meshwork123. You are correct. Certain oils, such as Jojaba or Argan oil can actually work to recondition the comb. You can also build a nice scent from the oils into the wood over time. Thanks, again! Good Luck with the Percy Nobleman. All the best!
