I have to hand sew and and cut everything and make my own patterns but you give me ideas that I can implement. LOVE watching you work. As clean as I’ve ever seen. Thanks for posting!
I watch these videos when I'm relaxing and by far my favorite parts are spraying down the leather with water, the saddle soap, the dyeing, burnishing, and the like
I remember watching one of your earlier videos when you showed how to sew a toe plug, it adds so much more to a holster. Beautiful job on this holster and the magnetic retention in the toe plug is something I might try. I want to make a chest rig and this would eliminate a retention strap. Thanks for sharing👍.
Seeing the whole process starting at the raw idea and taking the materials and tools and creating a functional piece of equipment is fascinating . Keep it up . Love what you do and have a huge amount of respect for the time and effort that you have put in to developing your amazing skill/artistry .
I'm a bladesmith so I don't make holsters and really the only leatherwork I do is sheaths but your work always inspires me to do better keep up the good work
Cutting a frame in basswood is so clever! I really like that. The holster is cool, I liked the magnet approach first time I saw it with the 1911 holster. Oh, also: obligatory words about lasers and real leaterwork and something about "must be nice". You rock.
As always, a work of ART! Almost too nice to hide IWB. I really like the use of the rare earth magnets. I sure like watching you work ! Thanks for sharing.
Not many people still use S&W 3rd Gen guns. I do, and I collect them too. Not a fan of tactical Tupperware guns. Like all steel or aluminum alloy and steel. I am also a big fan of leather holster and other leather items. I like leather holsters with thumb breaks. It provides a level of security during a hands of event or someone from behind attempting take your gun. I enjoy your channel very much !!! Ricky from IBM
@@RoadAgentLeather I too own many plastic guns, but down really care or them. But I would rather loose a plastic gun than a steel gun if I god forbid have to defend myself. I believe over time these plastic firearms will degrade. All the plastic and rubber over time seem to degrade. Guns made of metal have proven to last 100s of years.
I wasn't sure what to expect from that magnetic part, but holy, was that ever cool! Great work, man. I love the sheath with the weaved stitching, as well! Your work is very inspiring.
I have a question for you. I want to lead off by saying I really enjoy your videos ( I have no problem with your music, if I did my device has a volume control and close caption 😊) I am very new to leather working but I have seen you use what looks to be a “bar of soap” that you lather up the leather then put it in a plastic bag before you tool it. What is this and why do you do it rather than just wetting the leather? Thanks
Thanks for subscribing! That is glycerin saddle soap and I use it for casing the leather in preparation for tooling. It helps lubricate the leather fibers. This makes it easier for a swivel knife to cut through it and for stamps to give better impressions. It also helps to slow down drying a bit. It may be anecdotal, and it's not absolutely necessary, but it was a hack I learned years ago.
Thanks for the reply reg the glycerin saddle soap I will give it a try. So I noticed you put it in a plastic bag, why do you do that and for how long? Thanks
It's called "casing" the leather, and there's a whole mystique to it in certain circles. But it's not that difficult. It allows the moisture to fully penetrate before drying up. Some people leave it overnight . . . but I've never found that necessary. A couple of hours seems to work. Once removed from the bag, you can begin tooling when the leather starts to lighten up and turn back to it's normal color. Don't tool the leather wet!
Tape doesn't work as well. The leather can still stretch. There's also the issues with removing the tape when you're done. The wooden frame works SO much better. I showed this in a previous video.
I have a Guncrafters X2 double stack 1911 (2011) on order. I’d love to get a magnetic retention OWB holster for it and a IWB sheath for a Fairbairn Sykes that was made for me by master bladesmith Jared Williams. So…. How do I get one / place an order?
I like watching talented people at work . But I never thought of , gun Holsters/ belts ect was so relaxing - but time consuming?. ( Handmade ). Thanks.
Very nice work as always. I do have a 3 part kinda question about the saddle soap casing... how long do let it sit in the bag? How long do you let it dry after removing it? & do you do anything to it before tooling, stamping, ect...?
Thanks! It's just like regular casing. I let it sit in the bag for a few hours, then take it out. When the leather starts to turn back to it's original color start the tooling.
I haven't tried saddel soap yet, but I truly love casing my leather over night. It turns out so much prettier and better burnish when tooling. Thx again!
Great work as usual. I just got a laser and am practicing with it now. What program do you use to create the patterns for the holster for the cut files and do you use lightburn? Thanks in advance.
Thanks! Adobe Illustrator for creating the designs and making .stl files. It's a paid subscription (I'm a professional graphic designer so already had it). Inkscape is a free web-based option that seems good. I used Lightburn when I had my Creality machines. However, Xtool has their Creative Space app and I've been using that since I got their P2 laser. I don't think it has as many features as Lighburn, but it's free and obviously interfaces with their machines well.
For me it's less about time-save and more about precision and repeatability. The stacks of leather I had to cut to create both the welt and the toe plug that held the magnets would be near impossible to do otherwise (for me anyway). No effect on stitching and dyeing. In fact, you can actually laser cut stitch holes . . . . something I'll be showing in an upcoming video. The cons: There's the scorched edge and the soot to deal with. There's also the issue that you may generally waste more leather than hand-cutting or using a clicker press: You have to fit the leather into the machine somehow; which necessitates sectioning off your hide into smaller pieces. I've found this results in more unused material getting thrown into the scrap bin.
It's interesting how tooling leather is similar to steam bending wood. There's a stagecoach wheelwright I watch, and he showed how he has to keep the staves compressed from the ends when bending wagon bows.
The Xtool is a lot louder than I expected it to be. You really should be scuffing up the smooth side of the leather prior to gluing for better adhesion due to the increased surface area for the glue to attach to. 3 magnets is 2 magnets too much.
It's been a while since I made this piece, but I sewed everything that was glued. Adhesion doesn't necessarily need to be super-strong in that case. My admittedly amateur testing demonstrated that 3 magnets were need for the retention I was looking for. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!!
It's an old trick I learned. The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers: This makes carving with a swivel knife easier (if you're using one) and helps make the leather more pliable, which results in better stamp impressions. It also slows down the drying a bit. But it's something definitely not everyone does.
I still used my craftool chisels. However, these actually remove material by punching a hole (instead of cutting a row of tiny slits). I've found it's a little easier when working with thick welts like this holster has.
So nice to see the old leather craft has not been forgotten.
I'm speechless seeing this beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful flawless work, and retention done the way EVERY holster should be doing it.
Much appreciated!
I believe that might be one of the most beautiful holster I’ve seen. You are a true Craftsman. Thanks for the video.
Wow, thanks! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for your response on casing the leather with saddle soap. Will try it on my next project.

I hadn’t seen that before, that is pretty neat laser designing and cutting…wow, what a time saver.

Outstanding work. I have started using magnets on my knife sheaths. I got the idea from watching your videos. Thank you
That's awesome! Thanks!
Love both the old and the new tools.
Love how you did the magnetic retention.
I had no idea holsters even had magnets in them for that purpose. Pretty cool

I really like all your videos the workmanship is second to none. I would like to see the design process for your holsters.
I made this video. I was trying to replicate a full holster & belt rig from a picture in a book: th-cam.com/video/0COb_H3K6gA/w-d-xo.html
Well I love the tune
I'm curious why you make custom template holders to keep the leather from stretching during tooling, why not use tape on the back?
Tape doesn't work as well. The leather can still stretch. There's also the issues with removing the tape when you're done. The wooden frame works SO much better. I showed this in a previous video.

Makes the leather more pliable and I think it helps the glue penetrate a little deeper.

Could you possibly tell me the name of the temporary needles you use to help align the leather while sewing?
They're from WUTA leather. You can buy them from Amazon. Look up "leather positioning needles"

Just my opinion, but if you set the belt clip a little bit more to the left, as if you’re wearing it, it will conceal the gun better.

Is the reason you wet it with saddle soap because it gets it ready for tooling and gets rid of the soot from the laser cutter in one step?
It's an old trick I learned. The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers: This makes carving with a swivel knife easier (if you're using one) and helps make the leather more pliable, which results in better stamp impressions.
