Based my research and scientific data about different depths of drums, and material made from, the 8 inch should always sound lower than the 6 1/2 because the sound Has to travel that extra one and a half inches. Higher frequencies usually don't travel very far because of the amount of energy it takes to move those waves, versus base waves. Hence why you can hear a base cab further away then you could guitar cab, because those bass waves are slower and can move a further distance. Great comparison on the video. For my taste, I've always preferred a 6 1/2 as it's easier to lug around. Also, that stick rebound really helps.
I hear quite a bit of difference. To me the deep drum sounds beautiful by itself but not as good as the 6.5 when played together with the kick and cymbals. I would choose the 6.5 to play with a set but the 8 would make a wonderful concert snare for music requiring a deep sound.
I can ear the difference, the 4 year old older wood , older the wood is the more they sound gorgeous & 8 " deep sound a bit different with a nice tone I have one too sound so nice
