He maintained that his primary pen name came from his years working on Mississippi riverboats, where two fathoms, a depth indicating water safe for the passage of boat, was a measure on the sounding line. Twain is an archaic term for "two", as in "The veil of the temple was rent in twain."[160] The riverboatman's cry was "mark twain" or, more fully, "by the mark twain", meaning "according to the mark [on the line], [the depth is] two [fathoms]"; that is, "The water is 12 feet (3.7 m) deep and it is safe to pass."

If you’re still in the Hannibal, MO/Quincy, IL area, go to Underbrink’s Bakery in Quincy and have some of their danish pastries. It is literally my favorite bakery in the country.

Many many years ago I visited Hannibal with my parents. We didn’t go on the boats but we did go into the cave. No crawling in there, at that point in time at least.
Another very quaint area is Sandwich, Massachusetts, just north of Cape Cod. The Dexter Gristmill was created by my ancestor. Very close to it is a Sandwich glass museum.

We stayed there last summer at the Mark Twain Campground. The Mark Twain Cave and Cave Hollow Winery are on the same property as the campground. There is a trolley tour you can take from the campground into town. Such a fun experience.

"Fun Fact" about 10 min from our house in Decatur Al, Tom and Huck was filmed in the town of Mooresville, Alabama, it doubles for Hannibal, Missouri, Cathedral Caverns in Alabama also served as the location for Injun Joe’s cave. Released in 1995, and starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Tom Sawyer and Brad Renfro as Huck Finn, this movie was mostly filmed in the small historic town of Mooresville.

She has a lovely place, added it to places to stay. One of the "riverboats" out of LaCrosse Wisconsin used to do a trip down to Hannibal and back. I don't know if they still do it was in the 1980s when we went. Isn't it nice having that big wind shield and able to see things so nicely. That Mack dog pound should treat you well.

You could’ve done the cave as the temperature is usually stable throughout the year. It may have been warmer in the cave than outside. Thanks for this video. I love the Tom Sawyer story. I definitely want to visit there.

Visiting Hannibal makes Tom and Huck come alive! My favorite was going in the cave. (Its walkable, no crawling Todd!) There are many references in Twain's books to particular spots in this cave. Also, my wife loved seeing that "mansion on the hill". I suspect you will love it also.

    Clever. She’s wicked cute.
All kinds of brick here. Very different geography from the west coast. No volcanoes.
Best place to eat is the place that the old folks own and run. He’s a great cook,? Best soup I’ve ever had!
I consider myself a good cook.
    He’s better.
I think it’s called Greater Days.
Two best in Hannibal is Greater Days and Okinawa. Used to be a food truck. Hannibal rolls are wonderful! ,

We visited Hannibal last year at the end of May and stayed up at the Cave or Mark Twains Campground. We didn’t get to everything and was told everything didn’t open until after Memorial Day. Don’t have to say but are planning another trip there in June when the festivals start. Other interesting places are The Unsinkable Molly Brown House and also Lovers Leap.Cant wait till you get your rig setup going and see it turns out. Safe Travels

Born, raised, live and hope to die in Hannibal. Hannibal is the hometown of many famous people including Ukulele Ike (Cliff Edwards) who did the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Molly Brown of RMS Titanic fame was born here. Harold Lear, inventor of the Lear Jet and 8 Track tape machine was born here as well, as well as many other notable people. But...NO Clemens most definitely was not Col. Sanders. Many of the buildings on Main Street are really very haunted. Many history books have been written about Hannibal; in fact, I am in the one called Hannibal Too.
