Your right it is a masterclass , I remember hearing it when i was about 11/12 yrs , blown away by the drumming , the feel , the fills, all so creative , the intricate hi hat work, and those amazing cymbal sounds , total perfection from start to finish , Thanks for a wonderful interview, cheers frm NZ
I was just hanging out with Gary‘s cousin, John, at a wedding this past weekend. He was telling me that Gary is playing with Jim Croce‘s son, and they will be in Buffalo I believe in early January! Suffice it to say, I will be there, front and center!
I was gigging steady with Mick Hayes here in Buffalo back around '09. Mick hired Gary for some thing's who was in Buffalo for awhile. He hired him for a gig, Gary used my drums. In-between set's I told him my father (who was a Big Band Drummer at the time) my dad would take me to the new locally owned record store Record Theatre. Fly Like An Eagle was on over the sound system in the store! My dad and I called that beat- "The Slinky Groove" Thank's so much for the inspiration Gary .....
As we can hear from the live footage where Steve Miller said that they will play Fly like an eagle that is not recorded yet the whole song in the studio became something else...and better I think
Gary is one of my main drumming influences. He has covered a lot of ground and is a great creator of unique drum intros. A solid creative and imaginative guy. What a great spirit. Thanks John for your great YT channel. This is such a great pleasure to see all of our drum heroes talking with you about their experiences with other legendary musicians. Cheers
I got the idea to que Steve Miller Band essentials on Apple Music so I could select and play each track as you gentlemen discussed them. It really put me closer to the discussion and gave a clearer understanding of what Gary was explaining. Very cool 😎
Ha!! Mismatched Toms!! Awesome! - Gotta Let Gary know - "Eagle" is a funkiest of all time type track! Wicked & Cool bout the bell mic 🎤 - I know I'm far from alone on this, but i want to say; The recordings of which you speak in this video are all times faves of mine hands down ⬆ Desert Island Rock for me 🙏 Thanks Gary for the music!
Been listening and loving Gary’s playing since the Raven album. Everything he’s played on is just great. He has a definite style that comes through. Loved the Eddie Money stuff. Great discussion John!!!!
Mr Mallaber - my first drumming over 40 years ago was attempting to stay with you on the songs. Thank you John for these interviews for drummers. Bass drum - double pedal? I think Gary was the first to put that China cymbal in a popular song like that.
It was a single bass drum - years before double pedals. Yes I believe he was the first to incorporate a swish (Chinese effects cymbal) in pop songs in 1976. My pal Charlie Watts started using one in 1978 on “Some Girls.” Thanks for watching! 🙏❤️
@@livefrommydrumroom Iwas gonna comment on the china. obviously they became more popular later but when I was a 16 drummer. I was fascinated with them. like how did he make that sound?
These two sonic masterpieces have influenced my writing and recording styles and I am so proud that these interviews have verified my choice to follow in these steps. 😊
Thanks!!!So so great John and Gary!! One of my favorite drummers of all time and you can see why from his playing here and on countless other albums and songs. And he’s so wise and succinct about his process. Priceless!!!
Great interview and great insights as to how this awesome song came together-thanks John and Gary! Gary-did you work with recording engineer Marc DeSisto during your time with Eddie Money? Marc is a long time friend of mine.......
Listening to podcast now. Not sure if he mentions this but on the original version theres an odd edit (I think) if you listen closely the ride cymbal groove kind of gets messed up for a micro second it almost is like an extra 32 note time wise throws the groove off for a brief moment. Very subtle glitch. Thanks John. Loving all the track talk stuff. David
Hi Dave, I think you're referring to when a mic stand fails and they had to edit together take 2 and take 3. The tempos were perfectly consistent. We talk about it. Thanks for watching. 🙏❤
@@livefrommydrumroom Thanks John. Well that explains it. By the way the Don't take me alive discussion with Rick is really great. Very cool to hear him talk about that legendary track.
Love his drumming on this song. I'm not a drummer so maybe one of you can offer your opinion here, but does his timing change after the first chorus on the song? It seems the tempo picks up slightly after the first chorus, and certainly by the third.
I always liked Gary's work on Eddie Money's Two Tickets to Paradise. Awesome.

when I was kid I loved playing to fly like an eagle, jet airliner, but Rock n me was my favorite especially that intro !

Gary Mallaber’s playing on those Steve Miller Band albums influenced me as a drummer too. Great interview.

Great interview! Never knew who Gary played with.
GREAT interview!!! Loved it!
Really talented drummer and artist Love those albums.
Me too. I cut my teeth on those records. Thanks for watching 🙏❤

One of the greatest rock drum tracks of all time.
I couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching. 🙏❤
It's funk rock.....the clave is huge. It's the organ guy from Santana

Great interview, I always loved those tunes ✌️🪶🦬
Gary's groove on "Journey from Eden" is ultra-deep.
Did he ever mention what the hats were? They have a great tone on that recording.
I believe he told me a while back that they were 14" A New Beats, but I'll verify it with him. Thanks for watching!

Gary is extremely underrated despite that Gary is very talented.
Great drum track! Never knew who the drummer was!
Glad you enjoyed it! Gary has an incredible discography!
You need to have Gary back, he's played on some seminal recordings!
And he's From Buffalo NY Great Drummer
Some of the best rock and roll drums I've ever heard. Those EV Re 20s mics are way off the toms. They had a huge sound in the mix.

He said they spliced different takes because mic stand fell
Jazz training is what he is talking about......it's painful and uncomfortable but it's the foundation for his work....
