Wow, this was the absolute best video explanation for beginners. I just started trumpet and have consumed a lot of TH-cam content to try to get myself up to speed. The explanation of how the trumpet works was the base foundation I’ve been looking for. It also really helped to know that you can get started without buzzing. I’ve been working at it but have been really struggling. After your video, I was able to get a clear tone without much trouble. Thank you so much for this!
I am impressed! I've never played in instrument (73yo). ALMOST gave up & sell my cornet. You guys guided me to do it right. I am "saved!" Now to practice and watch vid 2... Thank you😊
Played saxaphone in high school. At age 51, picking up the cornet for the first time. You guys are awesome! Love your point about blowing softly and naturally, rather than using a lot of air and trying to buzz first. This was a real breakthrough for me. Thanks! :)
I have checked out so many courses on line and NEVER HAVE I SEEN SUCH A GREAT presentation of aperture and how to get a sound..only one other person I found talks about this approach , no forced buzzing, which I find difficult and unnecessary anyway!! this is the most thorough presentation intro to the trumpet structure plus getting a sound that I have ever seen! like you say, it should be NATRUAL AND EFFORTLESS!!! IT IS AMAZING TO ME THAT MORE trumpet players are not aware of this simple concept!!!!!!!!!!
Myself a new trumpet player..with hope...I have already been trying to play Do Ra Mee FAA So La si Do...and different types of scales. BUT I AM UNABLE TO PLAY SONGS. HOPE YOU GUIDE ME PROPERLY.
I've been teaching my 10 yr. old Grand-son to play trumpet - long distance via ZOOM. I started playing when I was 11, myself. Today, on his first day of 5th grade, as we watched your video here and talked about blowing techniques... and listening to your instruction, blow air first and narrow the space in your lips - I'm excited to say he was able to play a C-D-E !!!! I'm very proud of him and he is excited to be playing 3 notes finally!! Yea! Thanks for this video!
6:18 Oh my god I've been looking for that explanation in a lot of videos! Why people don't teach this? They just say "D is pressing like this" and I was always like HOW. Thank you, I can rest in peace now.
Hi jems now a days I am playing alto saxophone and I remember 1 January 2018 I started saxophone.because of you it could happened I saw you chromatic scale on alto saxophone and I started..in 4 years I am playing now with professional players on stage thanks brother thanks TH-cam….
Well done gents. I appreciate the information you took the liberty of sharing. Its invaluable and to those who don't appreciate it, they have no chance at being successful with this instrument.
Just unpacked my pink Tromba trumpet, I have not played trumpet before just saxophone, but I immediately get a lovely blow because I've spent years exploring breath support and how the instrument sings and resonates at quite gentle breaths.
Thank you guys. Totally brilliant. Okay. I'll buy a trumpet tomorrow. Might get one of those small ones so's I can take it in the car, practice there sometimes. No reason why not? Very interested in what you say about the sax. Can you say more? Can you give advice on that aspect of the sax - blow soft? I never see any vids talking about that, beginner or not. I came from (poor part time amateur) clarinet to the tenor and got along with it alright - many fights with getting the low C - and blowing quite a bit. Noisy. Videos, forums, told me 'it is a noisy instrument' make a noise. so I went with it. Then I recently got an alto. Surprised the hell out of me how easy it was to blow. Made me wonder if my tenor has a leak or something somewhere. Or if the mouthpiece/reed thing is a problem. Still don't know about that. But the thing is I was kinda forced by the ease of that alto blow to cool it a bit, calm down, blow softer. And I've begun to see that as you say the sax is a soft, quiet instrument. To my amazement. BUT: I don't really know how to go about it. LIke it must say something about choosing reeds and mouthpieces maybe? I don't know. But you guys seem to know something. I would love to hear it. And thanks again for a great vid. :) woops.... 9 years ago. Not going to get any replies now are we? Not from them. Their avatar links to a site that hasn't seen any updates for eight years, too. Ah well....
This is great stuff! I looked at my hands and realized my right thumb is bracing the lead pipe and the pinky is resting on top of the hook a the same height as the valve buttons. it's very comfortable. With the concert mellophone I rest the edge of the bell in my left hand. After a few tries it seemed the most natural and stable position. Each instrument has it's own preferences.
Hi Ted, the reason for a tighter and nasal sound could be that you sqeeze your lips too much, which makes the opening too tight. Try to loosen up a bit, make a slightly bigger opening. What also improves sound is practising on the mouthpiece (buzzing), which you can do whenever and where ever you feel like it. Keep a mouthpiece in your pocket and you'll be amazed how much 'lost moments' you will find in a day (and how much practising the mouthpiece will improve your sound). Good luck! Teus (Hello Trumpet)
Hi guys thanks for all ur guidance, it is great and very helpful,i would like to know from james where can i get a good alto sax. I stay in India, bangalore, any suggestions...
Thanks for this video. Please, don't repeat what you have ever said in others videos. Just tell the title of the related video. This will be more structured. And please, continue posting your so interesting (HD!) videos. Thanks a lot.
Really good video! Informative, casual, relaxed... Fantastic English, you guys! (My mother is from Amsterdam, so half of my relatives still live there.) Thanks! ;^)
At 4:45 you don't do 2-12-23-13-123 as you did on the previous and on the following "nature" note. Also I wonder if your use of "nature tones" is from british english. I know of "natural" notes meaning they're not sharp and they're not flat and there are also "partial" tones, meaning they're part of the harmonic series (C-G-C-E-G-Bb-... or B-F#-B-D#-F#-A-... etc.), but "nature tones" is not something I've heard of in my part of the world (California, USA).
hai boys thanks for this video i play trumpet i have played saxophone in 10yers but started on my Yamaha 4335g2 i was told it is good for students that wants quallity trumpet here is my question no one can answer why is my soud tight or nasal it dosent geth that ring or make the trumpet resonate it is tight
Thank you very much for the video guys though, I have a question why if I press the middle button I can make it sound and then if I press one of the other two I also make it sound but, if I don't start pressing any of them I don't make the sound at all? it's driving me crazy.. thanks a lot again xx.
You should just quietly blow air to the horn without pressing any valve, and like the guys said in the vídeo you should manipulate the aperture in your lips, if you are not making any sound in the open position it might be because your apertura is to loose
guys i want to ask you, you said that you dont need to buzz, old trumpet legends buzz but we dont dont need to. we can do it without that much effort. so, i wonder why do the old folks, legends, needed to buzz. needed so much effort, why they didnt say we can do it without much effort and play without buzz?? oh i didnt check. its a very old video. probably you gave up long time ago..
Don't play with one hand? I only have my right hand. I am 68 yo love music and I love challenges. I played trumpet when I was young. I just bought a used trumpet two days ago and started to practice, but please don't tell me not to play with one hand. That is all I have.

When he says nature tones he is referring to the notes of thre Bb serie that you can play on trumpet without pressing any valve
Don't you like nature Mamix?
Boys realy informative! I gues you guys live in holland ha? Cheers
How the hell do you do that trumpet call at 2:02 without any keys?! I can barely do it on a kazoo!
pantano207 its a bugle call (trumpet without valves)
It’s a bugle call like Zachary said but it utilizes notes in the harmonic series which do not require the use of valves

I play the sax and I want to learn how to play the trumpet. I was just wondering where you tounge while playing. Is it the same as the saxophone?
Hello... ; )
Erin Crawford i know things about brass but dont play any wind instrument and i think it goes right behind the lips so you can tounge 👍🏼
I tongue quite well also... How r u Erin? Am a trumpeter player. ; )
Kisses from Italy... ; ))
This is really great
What brand of trumpet are you guys playing?
My neighbors hate me right now
Thanks your your videos.

I want to learn a song from the trumpet
How is this army tune called, which you only played on the basic tones?
+Peter Lang (drumpeter) It's called Reveille. It's a bugle call used to wake military personnel at sunrise.
OMG! i can only hold a note for about 10 seconds... i could never hold a note for an hour (11:50)
Guys ... thank you.. really helpful !!
Where is the saddle on the tuning slide
It broke off :)
+HelloTrumpet too much fondling of the trumpet :D
Some Trumpets dont have saddles on the slides
