It was one of the best performances I'd ever seen from the reds and highlights don't do justice to their dominance. Does anybody else who was there remember the free kick from Case, one of the hardest shots I'd ever seen and must have hurt the goalies hands, but was somehow missed on the highlights? I was proud of the reds fans who sang Keegan's name during the game.
Back then live matches were few and far between. I wasn't allowed to stay up and watch the highlights on Midweek Sports Special but my Dad was working the 3-11 shift so while my Mum was sorting out his dinner, I sat at the top of the stairs listening to this broadcast (darting back into bed when I thought she was going to come upstairs) I held a grudge against Kevin Keegan for leaving Liverpool (still hold it) because I was only a new fan since the 77 FA Cup Final (the first game I watched as a supporter, but have never ever entertained changing allegiance!). I was soooo pumped for us to chin Keegan's new team. If I meet him and he apologises then we can forget the past 😆
Is this the greatest ever Liverpool team? People forget how great this team was. Manchester City in 2018 are a very good side, however, they haven’t beaten the UEFA winning German team 6:0 to win the European Super Cup and won back to back European Cups. If this happened today, can you imagine the superlatives. Furthermore, look at the style of play and football Liverpool played. Brilliant
hey,man from wales. just for Info: the german team is from the second largest and by far nicest town in germany.even HSV is not the best club in HAMBURG...that is called FC ST.PAULI!! you heart about? greetings from north-germany!
cheers for yet another great video. As a Liverpool fan, growing up in the 70s, it's great to see you've found some great Anfield euro matches. If Mcdermott or Ray Kennedy were in any other teams they would have been stand out stars...
HSV was very disappointing in season 77/78. But in season 78/79 they were great and become Bundesliga Champions. Sad that they are so extremly bad nowadays.
Went for the money, you only went for the money... That was one of the songs sang by the kop that night - aimed at Keegan's departure for 'a new challenge'. They sang his name at the end though. Keegan was a big loss, but then we got Kenny and the rest is history.
football as it should be......old times way,,,,without VAR//////// no tatoo.......without losing time, without fake injury/pain/wound .........and above all with very good players...I miss it enormously
Bit of a strange one really as an LFC fan, with his timing to leave strait after lifting the ultimate EURO prize in the summer. No one could believe it really from Liverpool. Here we were starting to conquer Europe( now without him), and he opted to play for "Hamburg" instead. At the same time know one could have imagined the success Kenny dalglish would bring as well to the club- amazing times to be be an LFC fan.
@@webbo9798 with how much money he earned by moving to Germany I don't blame him for that decision. Between getting 250.000 pounds per year playing for a big club in Germany and getting just 12.000 pounds per year while conquering Europe for Liverpool, going for the money was a no-brainer.
You had to feel for Keegan, playing against all the players he won trophies with. I wonder what would’ve happened if he’d stayed at Liverpool and they hadn’t signed Dalgleish?

@@lyndoncmp5751 Reason i asked was because of the attacks Liverpool would have on goal, then BANG! Haha some super-striker like Keegan or later Dalglish would ignite the place . Wondered on how loud the noise was and the buzz of scoring surrounded by the Anfield crowd.
Empty seats due to the high unemployment. Liverpool went out every game and new how important it was to joe public to win as Maggie was making life hell for the scousers. It was also an up yours to the rich south that Merseyside was united and never be defeated.
This was the European Super Cup. With Keegan in the Hamburg team Liverpool had a point to prove. By December Daglish had fully settled into the team both scoring and making goals. This was a very good team but not the best. Hansen was not yet a first team regular and sourness had not yet arrived, nor had Ian Rush.
Remember tho, the pitches were awful the ball weighed probably 5 times what the balloon used today weighs! Boots also in a different class, tackling is almost extinct now compared to what was deemed acceptable yesteryear, and the whole fitness and lifestyle regime is streets ahead, like to see today's players hit that old ball like case and the rest
Terraces packed but you were a wuss if you sat so the stay aways chrimbo weather were always from the kemlyn and main stands the leave earlys were softys bit of rain stay at home anyway was just the super cup me thinks not sure long long time agoooo
Back then it was twice as much to go to European Cup games than the League games thats why the kop and Annie Road end was always full I think the League games were about 50p to get in whilst the European games were £ 1 60p back then that was a lot of money
Who cares about the 70s??? What’s next the 30s???? Liverpool as a modern team are average man united and city are way better Liverpool on par with Crystal Palace

Right in the middle of the kop with me mates great game
Yes I was there that night. Total fabulous football from the reds ❤️❤️
Liverpool were a great team, undoubtedly. One of their greatest unsung players ? Ray Kennedy.
Spot on mate!
Italian football fan, here to see one of the best team ever, one incredibly strong and underrated midfielder, Ray Kennedy, n. 5

Yeah 77 cup final my 1st too ,Snap
From mid 70's to mid 80's Liverpool was the best team of ever ! Dominant with excellent players, really Reds Legends!

The 1979 team in league 16 goals all season and the team between 86-91.and 2000-02 league cup,fa cup, uefa cup, super cup charity shield.
Did HSV play with ? them at all they should have lose 0:10 so many chances Liverpool had. embarrassing for Germany
What a magnificent player was Keegan, outstanding and gentleman!!
Good night. Thank you so much for the exellent qualuty video. Enjoyed and liked of course. Bravo! Greetings from country Azerbaijan

For me, this was the greatest liverpool team ever. I believe they finished a 42 game season with only 16 goals conceded.
That was the following season. Souness adding value.
KEEGAN couldn't do anything against his former team. Thanks for the video again
keegan and Dalglish two of the best
The relentless Red Machine , all cogs working in perfect harmony
A superb analogy.
I was there,Keegan got a great reception, his name was sung before anyone else-even kenny
& I never even noticed tommy smith at right back& neal at left, strange reversal
Kennedy always looking for terry mac's running from deep, absolutely brilliant those two, kennedy assisting for 2 of mcdermott's goals that night ❤
Liverpool at their absolute best!!!
Lovely to hear the Kop sing for Mighty Mouse at the end.
RIP to our real childhood heroes:
Ray Clemence, Ray Kennedy, Emlyn Hughes and Tommy Smith.
HSV was very disappointing in season 77/78. But in season 78/79 they were great and become Bundesliga Champions. Sad that they are so extremly bad nowadays.
Terry Mac was on fire.
Kennedy really knew how to pass a ball.
Was in the Road End watching this southside

Aye.Great player was Kenny
Never understood a word he said but great on the pitch.

Must have been strange for keegan to face his old team mates so soon after leaving

Larsson had to score for Barcelona, a true pro that he is, against Celtic in a major tournament, so yeah.

Winning our first UEFA Super Cup here
thank you so much gr8footy
Was at this match on the kop
So many nights like this at Anfield in the 70s as the Reds pulverized European teams unable to cope with the unrelenting press and sheer pace
What a team this was.
Gerald Sinstadt - a southerner like me who like me went up North and spent many years watching LFC blow other teams away.
Why do many empty seats in the Kemlyn Road stand?
the decade when even england was at least a semi mustache nation...
(never mind argentina, italy, jugoslavia, turkey & hungary being a full on mustache nation)
Absolutely right. I was 6 and my dad let me sprout a full Mexican!
Ground improvements?
Why is there no footage or even any photographs of Liverpool with the super cup trophy they won after this game?
It was a two legged affair.
The Mid-Week Match!
The third goal... Back then you had to actually KICK the ball real hard... What they play with today is a joke.
Has the hamburg's number 5 some kind of rheumatism (0:14, 1:13, 4:54)?
Those so called Liverpool fans who complain about non local fans taking seats should watch this. A super cup final and anfield is 50% empty
The super cup was a non event back then and Hamburg were hardly a big draw
All seater stadiums - the death of the authentic football experience. I wouldn't visit one if it was free admission.
Not 50% at all.
I wonder at this point keegan thought what have I done lol
6:39 Definitely an assist from the groundsman there.
What was the Anfield capacity back then?
Pretty sure it went from around 56,000 in the 1976/77 season down to around 52,000 in the 1977/78 season.
Watched it from the paddock next to lpool dug out.tommo sorted a ticket.kirkby thing.
Bob Paisley said Ray Kennedy was the player he had the most enquiries about from Europe , on this evidence you can understand why ?
Strange to see Kevin Keegan wearing blue at anfield......
I only knew that the name KING KENNY had been around since 1977
Król Kenny KING Dalgisch był był w tym meczu.
gr8 fun seeing HSV getting ripped apart like this ;D
That was the most lacklustre German side I've seen so far
Why was Anfield not full? It takes 11 years to get a season ticket nowadays
MJ B the tories sucked the life out of cities like Liverpool
MJ B Does it really take 11 years to get season tickets? ?
great vid i remember this game as a kid great team n era an jealoua as hell of em.no one sold out every week in those days.
The Super Cup was not really rated as that prestigious, to my recollection.
Empty seats due to the high unemployment. Liverpool went out every game and new how important it was to joe public to win as Maggie was making life hell for the scousers. It was also an up yours to the rich south that Merseyside was united and never be defeated.
Supercup,SuperLiverpool!!
3:0was Supergoal!!!
5:56 Terry Mac
Back when footballers didn't cheat every time they breathed (and fans preferred it that way).
HSV didn`t do his job as so often german teams playing internationaly .
kev chasing the money not the glory
❤
Why the empty seats
Suits, innit?
@@darganx Kemlyn rd-always got stick from the kop
Because nobody gave a fuck about the "super" cup, it was a non event to us back then

They don’t make them like that anymore!!
I was at this game. I thought it was a friendly. I remember it was played like that. No real intensity about the game.
👌👍

Modern football stars are an embarrassment! Sad it's so very sad
Modern footballers today are miles ahead of these ability wise, not sportsman wise

Lots of empty seats.
Remember this game Kevin Keenan got a lot off stick from the kop and it shows how much better king Kenny was
