Liverpool 2-1 (aet) Manchester United, League Cup Final 1983

  • Liverpool were aiming to become the first club to win the League Cup three years in a row. Meanwhile, Manchester United wanted to end a barren run that had seen only one trophy since 1968 - the FA Cup in 1977 when, ironically, they beat Liverpool in the final. It was to be an emotional day for Bob Paisley as he led his Liverpool side out at Wembley for the last time. The commentator is John Motson.

I love the way both manager's just sit on the bench throughout, only standing up when a goal is scored and half rising for a contentious decision. No ostentatious stalking of the touchline as happens today, together with performative badgering of the officials.

40 years ago today. I was an 11 year old Blackpool fan who attended my first game at Wembley with my Stoke supporting dad and 18 year old Utd fan elder brother. Dad (RIP) and I were in the seats opposite the royal box. My bro was in the Liverpool end and was pretty safe due to the amount of mancs in with the scousers. It was one of the best days of my life. I didn't support either team, so could enjoy the game as a neutral. I treasure days like these that I spent with my old fella.

My grandparents ( United supporters) told me about the amazing FA Cup Final between Blackpool & Bolton in 1953 as they were living in Blackpool at that time. My United friend was so distraught after the game he went straight back to the hotel to bed lol. Rest of us hit Central London to celebrate. Long hungover journey back on the Sunday but well worth it! Football was great in those days. Paisley inherited a successful club with a boot room full of experience from the man who built Liverpool Bill Shankly and then presided over the club's most successful period.. If anyone deserved a Knighthood for his contribution it was Shanks- he actually got an OBE as did Bob. Paisley was a very good and modest man but Ferguson's achievements far outweigh Paisleys. Ferguson BUILT clubs and teams. Look what he did @ a comparatively small club in Aberdeen against the might (in those days) of the Old Firm. Back then Glasgow Rangers( the richest club in Europe) could have bought and sold both Manchester United and Liverpool. He then went on to win trillions of trophies @ Manchester United.
I actually do believe that Paisley should have been knighted and he was a lovely modest old bloke but he was never the manager that Shanks, Ferguson or Clough were!!!

    • @ervineokuboh7459

Paisley was manager for just 9 years. Ferguson managed United for 27 years. Paisley won 6 League titles and 3 European Cups in 9 years. Ferguson won 13 titles in 27 years (three times the amount of years Paisley managed) and 2 European Cups. Therefore how can you say his achievements far outweigh Paisley's ? The only way you can quantify that statement is if they both managed their clubs at the same time and for the same tenure. Otherwise Paisley matches Ferguson easily.

They even beat Real Madrid in the ECWCF which is absolutely astonishing!!!!! Paisley inherited a fabulous club from Shanks and fair play he didn't rock the boat and made the most of his opportunity however Ferguson built his teams. Shanks was the true genius @ Liverpool imo.
