Hi Robers. Yes loose straw does work a lot better. Undortunately we had these bales on the floor as they did not fit in the shed. There will be a video thst includes the straw delivery soon. 😀
Is straw hard to find in the area you live, Not having a go at the set up you have to work with, But live stock farms in east Anglia and Lincolnshire would not allow beef or dairy herds to be kept like that, But they also have available bedding at minimal cost apart from the bailing, Please don’t think I am having a go, It must be so difficult to obtain wheat & barley straw in certain areas because of costs, Thousands of hectares of wheat straw gets literally chopped up by the combines, 🇬🇧🇮🇪.
Straw is brought in, nothing is produced locally to hill farms in Wales. I do not know how straw is priced through the country but we are looking for ways to make it go further. We have to try different things and see what does and does not work best for our application.
I can remember thousands of loads of straw, Small bales being loaded on a flat purpose built body and towing huge trailers, Being loaded in different areas of East Anglia to be taken either to Wales or Scotland, Way before the round or Hesston bales were available, The Hesston 500 KG were ideal for this, Easy to load didn't move hardly at all because of the size and weight Lisa.🇬🇧🇨🇮
If I couldn't afford to keep them cleaner than that I wouldn't bother and just rent the shed to someone who knows how to bring on young calfs you can't expect them to thrive in that mess
Thanks Richard, these calf are a lot wetter than the ones we had last year. these ones need cleaning out a lot more than the ones we had last year. Not sure if it is the cake going through them or what at the moment?
They have access to the straw bedding at the back which is pretty dry . The wet at the front is only ½" deep. And they do not stand in it day and night.
Hi Lisa, You have got your hands full of things to do, the animals, the equipment, etc. All the best, Ken

Hi Brian. Thank you.
LOOKING GOOD HARD WORK ON THE GO
Keeping busy as always
I thought a straw blower would speed things up, just drop a couple of bales in and shake up with a fork
