What to Buy for Your Electric System?

  • Going electric requires you to design a whole custom electric system for your ship. The challenge with electric systems is the interaction. The requirements for one minor component may determine key settings for the whole system. Today I cover some key settings for the electric system. After deciding these points, the complexity of shopping should simplify into a few simple paths.

So, NIck, serious question: what kind of considerations need to be made if one would want his yacht to be EMP hardened. I'm guessing having spare components on board, e.g. nav displays, etc. would be one consideration.

I think NOT being a prepper is the safest thing to be. Not being prepared for a collapse provides maximal incentive to work on preventing the situation in the first place, rather than surrendering to any perverse incentives to disengage and do nothing. As I tell my crews, "The most effective piece of PPE is your brain--No gear will save you if you allow yourself to be in a bad situation."
Nick's advice would be to hire a competent professional. At a minimum, I'd go for an electrical engineer.
As a surveyor, my advice for your specific example is to learn to use a sextant, compass, and paper maps, because your nav display is going to be useless without satellites.

I'm 99.9% sure that ABCY rules on traction systems require that hotel/house batteries are NOT same bank as traction power. So you can have 48V or 24V hotel since accessories are more available here, and make you traction voltage something else. So this might break the same voltage for everything rule...

I was concerned about that as well. I checked ABYC standards E-10 (storage batteries), E-11 (AC & DC Electrical systems), and E-30 (Electric propulsion). I could not find anything that requires the traction battery and hotel battery to be separate. There was an expectation that the starting battery for engines should be separate from the hotel battery. But I could not find a requirement to separate the hotel and traction batteries. If you find the reference, I would love to know about it.

@@DatawaveMarineSolutions You are probably correct in that case. My 99.9% confidence factor was too high; now that I think about it, the comment was from a colleague who I respect and 99.9% was the person, not the information :-) Here in Australia we have ---nil--- guidance from regulatory bodies for DC marine system, other than it falls to the ELV/LV rules where you can do what you want under 120V DC. I also heard AMSA (our peak regulator) is going to limit battery ESS to 30kWh, for vessels outside of a class type. I assume they'll make new classes and survey rules for > 30kWh but have no idea today.

An exceedingly interesting and informative video! As usual... :) One small point: From an electrical engineering point of view the output from an electrical machine of a certain size does not depend on the voltage. A lower voltage requires thicker wire but fewer turns so the torque stays the same, power stays the same. It does depend on speed (that is why brushless motors running at high speed can produce huge amounts of power in a small package). Voltage sometimes does practically have an effect because the terminal blocks for low voltage are so huge they add to the volume of the machine! I'd expect that over time the voltage for small - moderate power installations will end up at 250 - 400 VDC, maybe slightly higher. This matches up well with semiconductor device ratings and costs and wiring costs.
