I’ve been a Yankee fan for 50 years. The two worst days of that time were the day Murcer was traded and the day Munson died.
Even though I wasn't living then, and you can't compare a baseball game to a death, aside from the deaths was Game 7 of the 1960 World Series when the Yankees lost owing to a walkoff home run by Bill Mazeroski.
My favorite baseball player of all time was Bobby Ray Murcer. Thank you for this incredible tribute video. I cannot believe anyone would give this a thumbs down. That’s messed up.
Even though they won a lot of World Series in my lifetime I think my favorite Yankee game ever was Bobby’s game-winning hit in the Thurman Munson game against the Orioles. To go from Thurman’s funeral in Ohio earlier that day to play the game against the Orioles at the stadium at night and for Bobby to get the game-winning hit was incredible and very fitting since he was Thurman’s best friend.
Bobby Murcer and Thurmon Munson were my heros growing up in NY.

A great Yankee… a great broadcaster… a great man.
I knew Bobby when I worked at the old stadium, he was a terrific person.
I will never forget what Bobby did the day after Thurman Munson died. Murcer was a true Yankee hero and was a much better broadcaster than anyone we have now.
You are still missed Bobby!

I went to many bat days and always hoped to get the one with Bobby Murcer's name on it. Finally after getting Tom Tresh for 4 years I finally got the bat with Bobby Murcer's name on it. He and Thurman Munson were my idols growing up. When Bobby was traded in December 1974 for Bobby Bonds it made me sick. Murcer will always be in my heart and mind. He was one of the great Yankees and always will be. RIP Bobby Ray.

After mickey mantle retired bobbyy murcer was my favorite player and boy hood hero. He and thurman munson were the bright spots on those early 70s teams and gave us hope the yanks would turn things around after those bad few years in the late 60s. I hated stienbrenner for trading bobby to the giants and was glad he got him back. Rip bobby. Thanks for giving a young kid from jersey someone to look up to.
Murcer was a great Yankee. Very underrated.

Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer...were my idols growing up as a kid...when Bobby was traded for Bobby Bonds.i cried my eyes out...i remember in 1979...Bobby was back..after 2 championSHIP..team s....was hoping Bobby would finally get his ring....August 2 1979..my birthday no less..the tragic loss of Thurman. .crushed me....the Day Bobby Drove in All five runs was symbolic..the type of man he was..his annoucing years were unforgettable with scooter and seaver....how he handled himself on and off the field he was truly a Yankees Legend....Sir i so thank you for the wonderful memories....God Speed....Mr Murcer....Rip.....

I loved Bobby Murcer....he was a great Yankee ! As the video says, Bobby was the one standout player during a low period for the Yankees, when Mantle was retired and fans looking to Bobby to be another Mickey. He WAS " another Mickey" for me at Yankee Stadium on June 24th, 1970 on my sister's birthday, when I witnessed from great box seats behind the plate a tremendous feat that was one of the greatest ever in that stadium. In game one of a double header against the Indians Bobby smacked a homer in the ninth inning.
In game two of that double header, Bobby proceeded to hit THREE homers in a row !!!!.......making it FOUR CONSECUTIVE home runs !!!.....and I was there to witness it !!! Well, Bobby had just equaled Lou Gehrig in hitting 4 homers consecutively in one day...( Gehrig did it in one GAME ! ) and Mickey Mantle, who hit four in a row spread over two days. Bobby became a great announcer and gave the fans a lot of fun while doing so. He was a class act all the way and was beloved by the fans .....like me......who remember him and miss him to this day. I was lucky... I once saw Mantle and Mel Stottlemeyer hit home runs at the stadium in a game against the White Sox in 1965. I was there when Mantle got the 18 minute standing ovation during the ceremony for his retirement, and I was there when Billy Martin was rehired for the 3rd time and they handed out " Billy's Back !" T-Shirts, ( I still have mine ! ). I saw " Donny Baseball" hit homers in New York and Boston on his way to setting the grand slam season record. However, it was Bobby Murcer who proved that day he was a real Yankee hero in the tradition of the great ones who gave us fans hope and thrills whenever he donned the pinstripes !

I really loved listening to him broadcast a game on WPIX. Murcer won me over with his relaxed style and deep knowledge of baseball. He is missed!
My hero growing up in the 70s still got my Bobby Murcer bat I got at bat day and I’m 58 this year in 2020

one of my favorites. I will never forget when Bobby drove in all Yankee runs in a 5-4 come from behind victory versus Baltimore after earlier in the day giving a eulogy at Thurman’s funeral.

Wonderful player! It was a shame that there was such great pressure put on him to become the new "Mickey Mantle". Geesh. He was nowhere near Mantle's size! But, he had a lot of heart, a lot of talent and a lot of love.

When men were men, they played baseball and left the game and family to serve our beloved America. Thanks for the memories, Bobby! I still have your glove ;) TH-cam will never let you be forgotten.

I grew up in southern Connecticut and saw bobby play many times when I was a young kid at the stadium
He had a lot of lofty expectations put upon him having to follow mickey and I'm sure he felt a lot of pressure from that . But he really was a solid player . He played only 13 seasons and missed 2 seasons while in the military and his career numbers are still solid . And he was a classy gentleman
Bobby was my favorite player of that era. I was at the game the day they buried Thurman. I’ll never forget that game winning hit.
My first game ever was Bobby Murcer day in 1983. I was 7 years old. It was a very hot summer day in the Bronx.

I have your uncle's autograph, along with the late Thurman Munson and several Yankees players who were hanging out in the lobby. I got it at the Grand Hotel in Anaheim when the Yankees were in town to play the Angels. This was in 1971, and my family and I were vacationing at Disneyland that summer. I also saw him play as a Giant at Candlestick Park- Bobby was right...had Patty Hearst been hiding in the upper deck at Candlestick no one would have ever found her.
DeDe Murcer Moffett I grew up in Cincinnati and was and always be a reds man that being said your uncle Bobby Mercer playing in the jr. circuit that's the American league. but he was a favorite player of mine. always liked him and I remember watching that game after Thurmond Munson died and thought to myself that's a hell of a ball player to do what he did that night!! god bless your uncle!! he was nothing but class!!
Your uncle was quite literally one of THE classiest men I have ever known. We loved and respected him dearly at the YES Network. Working on his obituary was one of the hardest and most meaningful things I've ever done in my career.

He was a favorite as The Yankees began to rebuild. Those were fun teams Murcer, Munson and Bloomberg gave hope for a young Yankee fan who missed the last dynasty and only had a crippled Mantle of what was.

How is there not a movie about Thurman Munson and that game?Hollywood makes endless bad sequels and tries to turn 5 min SNL skits into mostly bad movies because they run out of creative ideas yet a story like this about the most successful sports team ever has never been into a movie.Greatest game ever!It was meaningless as far as the standings went and I've seen the Giants, Devils, Alabama, and Yankees win multiple titles but that game outranks them all!
Because Munson does not fit the agenda.
Hell yeah!!! As a 15-year-old kid in New Jersey that lived only 20 miles from The House That Ruth Built, this story has drama, tragedy and raw emotion in spades. And, it's a 100% true story. I remember how the entire Yankee team, and every fan in the stands and at home was collectively in tears. This would be an incredible movie.
Actually, and sadly, you might be right. Munson was a family man, and not a showboat. His actions took place on the field and he didn't put up with shi* from reporters. He was too real a man and a action hero who didn't talk the talk and make a show of himself.
Munson was NOT a nice guy.
@@ErichLRuehs there was talk at that time Munson was possibly looking to play for Cleveland to be closer to home and be with his family. With Thurman dying in when plane crashed practicing his "touch and goes", to get his pilots licence to comute from New York to Ohio, again to be with his family.

A shame he missed out on those 77-78 teams. Just bad timing in terms of never having won a ring. Class act. And maybe men of his stature didn't need a ring to verify who he was.
