Just heard a very touching story from Yankee play man, Michael Kay, about how Yogi used to drive every day to the Assisted Living Home that The Scooter lived at towards the end of his life. To comfort the very sick & scared Rizzuto, Yogi would hold his friend's hand until Phil fell asleep. Two of the nicest men that I had the great honor to meet. R.I.P. Yogi & Scooter.
Yogi is one of the greatest players ever to play the game.Yogi is also one of the greatest people to represent the game,he is a true classic. The Hall Of Fame would not be the same without him!!!!!!!!!!
My former boss at work fought in World War II, and one time during the war he played in a basketball game against a team Phil was on. A guy on my boss's team got hurt bad and lost a couple teeth. He was laid up a few days because of it. The next morning after it happened he had a visitor who came to see how he was doing and wish him well. The visitor was Phil Rizzuto. Rest in peace you sweet soul.
A great man; years ago, i worked at a private golf club he belonged to. used to hand out tix to the caddies, when he had them. i still miss him after all these years. rip
I remember first hearing his broadcast in 1977-78 when I was 7-8. He was one of the first teachers I ever had preaching the fundamentals of baseball. While my playing career ended when I received my H.S. Diploma, I will teach my son what he taught me. Rest In Peace.
I remember Ted Williams being asked in an interview by Suzyn Waldman: What made the Yankees better than the Red Sox when you played? Williams replied: "Phil Rizzuto".
I had opportunity to meet Mr. Rizzuto in Brick Town where he called home in his latter years. Such a nice man, and his baseball legacy speaks for itself.
Yogi's athletic accomplishments while legendary , record setting and we'll chronicalled Yogi Berra's character and personality has overshadowed these world class feats of strength and conditioning - it takes a lot of courage and toughness to be a catcher in the Big Leagues- The position is part psychology, part intuitiveness , and a lot of savy mixed in with durability and a strong arm with good eyes - Yogi , you'll always be one of my favorite Ballplayers And People -Please Say hello to Billy and the Mick for me and give a wave to Papaw cause I'm sure he's watching right behind home plate -
I grew up listening to Rizutto, White and Messer. As a 10 year old, the scooter made you interested in the game with the "Holy cows" and getting exited and raise his voice when the Yanks made a great play in the field or got a hit. When Phil got excited, as a kid , I got excited. He made me a baseball fan. I still watch old Yankee games on You-tube just to hear Phil, Bill, and Frank... R.I.P. Yogi and Phil
Miss Scooter, Yogi , Munson, Murcer, Hunter and so many other great players that the Yankees had. My dad took us to see them every year they came out to play the Angels? I may have have never been to New York, but I'm a Yankee fan to the core!!!
Life long Sox fan, since 1972 but i gotta tell you that i just loved Scooter....loved him on PIX and have never enjoyed watching baseball more than when he was doing the games. i love Yogi as well...great yankees and better men.
How good is that we lovers of baseball get so choked up when we lose someone that we feel is almost part of our extended family. Another anecdote about Yogi is that when Joe Dimaggio was to Marilyn Monroe Yogi quipped: I am not sure this is good for baseball but it sure beats the hell out of rooming with Phil Rizzuto. Farewell Yogi we are going to miss you so much.
Wow. If anybody wanted a true friend they could not do better than Yogi Berra. Just blown away. A real unpretentious true American Hero and baseball hero. Who can say enough. So thankful to see this video.
I had some much like & administration for Yogi & Phil both. You can see Yogi almost broke when he said “He’s my sons Godfather & I’m gonna miss him.” RIP to 2 great baseball players but more then that they were great people who brought the gift of laughter to not only sports fans but in Yogis’ case the general public we the people still quote his Yogi-Isms to this day.
First and foremost, I am a fan of the game. I love the history of it. I miss playing it. All the time, when I was a kid I would play, always behind home plate cause I was too slow to do anything else. Second, I'm a Cubs fan. Proud of it no matter what. Thats just me. Third, I have a lot of respect for the Yanks, especially during Yogi's era. All the great Yanks like Yogi, Whitey, Don, Phil, Roger, Moose, Elston, Billy and especially Mickey. Man, thats a great lineup. I love this game.
Two great Men, Yogi and Scooter. I got to meet Scooter once, he came out of the broadcast booth at the Oakland Coliseum and I introduced myself and he was so nice to chat with me for a few minutes.
@fek2000 Thank you for your comment. I am truly stunned by the viciousness of some of the comments. This generation was so.....well, every positive adjective you can name. I appreciate them for it. God bless Phil, Yogi, and the rest of this era, who thought they owed baseball.
Very sad to see Yog lose his best friend. I can only imagine how painful that was for him. I loved watching games back in the day when I was a kid and Scooter was doing play by play. As bad as our Yanks were in the late 80's and early 90's, he always kept things entertaining. Some great summer memories of those days!:-)
During this press conference it became abundantly clear to me that Joe Torre was every bit woven into the fabric of the legendary yankees where he could not only sit amongst them, but speak on their behalf.
back in the day my Uncle and his brother in laws cook in the kitchen there after my Uncle passed away they held his after funeral party there lots of memories
@mvp91593 Yogi won three MVP Awards to Bench's two, and Bill James said Yogi is the greatest offensive catcher in history. There's room in the Hall of Fame for both. No need to cut one of them down. This is baseball, not war.
Yogi Berra, arguably the greatest baseball ever. Playing the most important position on the most successful and important professional team in baseball history. Ruth? great Williams? incredible DiMaggio? class personified Mays? great athlete but Berra won it more times than any other player. He's the Bill Russell, the Tom Brady etc; of baseball. No ones close
Phill RIZZUTO TOLD A GREAT STORY. about yogi playing right field near end of season whity ford trying to win #20 .with 1-0 lead in last inning yogi bats a ball over the right field wall for HR for opposite team. whity didnt get #20 THAT DAY . yoGI tells a different story that the HR went way over his head in right field. it was near end of season yanks were trying to preserve yogis knees by playing him in right field that game.
i agree, but a lot of guys should not be in like bill mazeroski, and i dont like ozzie smith being in, he was a one dimensional player, i would put tim raines in over ozzie smith, Phil got a lot of support and so many people were campaigning for him
people dont realize that playing for the Yankees were important because playing the world series nearly every year gave the players extra money....their yearly salary hardly paid all the bills.....as a lifetime Yankees fan..though i rarely watch the game these days....i can say listening to Rizzuto was a pleasure...the main reason i stopped watching and listening to the yanks is because i cant stand the announcers

I've never seen Kay break down like that, shows how good of a person Yogi was and how he was genuine in and out of the limelight. R.I.P.
+lemmiwinks09 I thought there was something wrong with my radio, because there was about 30 secs of dead air, because Kay couldnt talk.
The Reese, Rizzuto debate will go on as long as the Mays, Mantle and Snider debate. Who was better? To me, they were all great.
I love Yogi Berra! He is one of the greatest personalities and talents in the game EVER. You are missed✌️❤️⚾
I miss them all Yogi, Phil, Mickey, Roger. The heroes of my childhood are fading away.
phil and yogi were the best i hope they have fun in heaven
Yogi is one of the greatest players ever to play the game.Yogi is also one of the greatest people to represent the game,he is a true classic. The Hall Of Fame would not be the same without him!!!!!!!!!!

I miss Phil Rizzuto and Yogi Berra and I wasn't even alive when they were playing
Yogi Berra is an American treasure! He is truly one of the greatest ambassadors our nation has ever had...
I remember Ted Williams being asked in an interview by Suzyn Waldman: What made the Yankees better than the Red Sox when you played? Williams replied: "Phil Rizzuto".
R.I.P Yogi
I love the way Joe is there with his arm around Yogi to support him. The old ball players were the best.
Made me think of Thurman Munson #15
I had opportunity to meet Mr. Rizzuto in Brick Town where he called home in his latter years. Such a nice man, and his baseball legacy speaks for itself.
The Yankees had some special old timers that really knew how to play as a team. The players then played for the love of the game. RIP Phil 🙏
Phil take care buddy!!
You will be missed.
Thanks for all the fun times.
good friend ....lucky to have him

One legend discussing another legend...RIP to the both of them, I'm surprised they didn't mention Phil's work on that Meatloaf record.

This was a crummy thing to do to Yogi. He loved his friend and it had to be hard for him to talk about him. He should not have been subjected to this.

Berra, Rizzuto, Mantle, etc. are the great Yankees. They never made millions but they loved the game and each other. Never see their likes again.
HOLY COW !
Yeah me too
Phil told me at a tryout that I didn't have the skills to reach the majors as a second baseman.. he was right...then I became a Chippendales dancer.
