What do you use for the cedar detail around windows and and doors? Is it sold in those dimensions or do you cut it from some other stock?

Fab video. We are ready to add cedar cladding to our summer house. Builder wants to fit horizontal but all the ones online seem to be fitted vertical. Is there a reason for this?

Really nice job. I have never installed cedar cladding before but I have some to do soon on my own house and would appreciate if you could clarify some thing for me. As you said Cedar is very expensive stuff here in the Uk, I don't want to mess it up.
Did you oil the back of the cladding before installation?
You seem to have installed the board tight to the window frames, are you expecting the cedar to shrink as it dries leaving the gap manufacturers recommend (8mm I think it was)?
Also, manufacturers recommend 200mm clearance from the ground. I think I'd prefer it closer to the ground as you have it here but how critical is it?
Did you install an insect mesh top and bottom to stop bugs getting in and nesting?
Hi William. Do you always order your cedar so there's no joints on the vertical boards? As in all of the boards are ordered at c. 2.3m so you are always fixing full length boards and not having to butt join over a batten?
generally get 8ft lengths, and trim to size
Hi , any reason for using owatrol oil ? , am considering Osmo uv oil , looking for a more satin sheen for my cedar and longer lasting if possible what would you recommend please ?? I have been using your videos to build my garden room and its been so helpful keep up the good work!.

Osmo oil is also very good UV 12x oil. £63 for 2.5L, great stuff!

I’m a plastering tutor in a college in Wales and would love to possibly get you online in the new academic year (September onwards) to talk to my level 3 students about the pros and cons of being self employed. Let me know. Great workmanship also. You could highlight the plastering more though 😉

william griffin I need to up my prices if that is what he is pulling down. 😂😂 In all seriousness I will be in touch and if you are keen would love to get you to speak with students, I think your honesty will strike a chord cause as much as I tell them it’s hard work I’ve been in education now for 12 years and I can’t speak from experience no longer. I had a fibrous plasterer from Wigan come to see me this year and did a workshop for me, the students loved it. Massive respect for you guys out there day in day out and willing to share knowledge and experience. We need more like yourself.

It’s crazy now, but we generally go home at 3, work all day, then go home and enjoy your home life. Tell your students, I’ve gone from the recession and standing outside b@q with a sign saying , Joiner, will work for cash or food. I needed to feed my family.

william griffin you’d be just the man to talk to them, in normal circumstances I’d have level 3 students with me in September but I am unsure how it is going to unfold as Wales is running things slightly differently to England. As long as I know you are up for it I will keep track of you via this you tube channel and once I know the plan would it be ok to contact you and set up an online session with my students? Obviously I would work around you and wouldn’t want to impact your working day too much. Just think it be really beneficial for young people to hear from someone like yourself on the experiences of being self employed and employing people etc. If you did come to wales then I’d take you for a breakfast but since this lockdown we been told to do everything online!

100%, it’s the face fixing of the 16g that looks like a bullet hole!
Great video, Looking at the suffix and fascia how do you finish the corner? It looks like a small square piece.
upvc soffit and fascia comes with corners so its a tidy finish, also the rubber roof comes with a corner piece too
Try the osmo uv oil. Very high quality and lighter on the pocket

Sorry. One other question....if i'm building on a concrete base and want a 0.5m deck at the front would you just pour a bigger pad to also hold deck area or would you do this as separate once the garden room is built?

A guy on here used a plasterer bead fixed to the bottom last, genius idea, the one thats a mesh

this may be a silly question, can you fit the cladding straight to the walls instead of using battens. ( does there have to be a gap between the wrap and the cladding )

I've only got a framing nailer that takes 50mm D head stainless nails. will these be ok for a ship lap or other cladding board that has a larger overlap? or will 2.8mm nail tear it up?
I got 1m x M16 rods off screwfix. it's only a 3x 2.5m I'm building and using 13 piles + threads. I read a M16 can take up to 1.5ton so I hope. they will be ok..??
Hi, nailer will be ok as long as it’s got depth gauge, we sometimes use the 63mm d heads on the feather edge at the back. Rods are on the small side tbh, but a unit that big should be only around 3/4 tonne in total in my experience on the way we build them.
@@thegardenroomguru wow fast reply.. yeah if each M16 thread can support 1.5ton then 13 of the should be be ok under compressional forces. I suppose it's just the lateral forces and longevity which is gonna be the concern..
So you only need Brad nails ? I'm guessing the tongue and groove gives the joints the majority of the strength. Gorgeous build! I want to do the same on my house.

I'm about to cladd my summerhouse with shadow gap 20mm pine. I bought battery powered nail gun from amazon that shoots type 47 nails, 32mm max, would that be sufficient for my cladding? Thanks in advance guys
Is 18 gauge nails sufficient for outdoor cladding as they don’t have much of a head ?

Firstly, i love your builds. I am currently building a 7 x 4.5 self build garden room which has been helped by you and several other youtube posters. My question I have going forward is you glue your roofing OSB together with Ebuild Lumberjack adhesive ( just purchased it ) but all the reseach I have read says that OSB boards or PLY for flooring should have a 3mm expansion gap. If i use this expanding glue then I will lose this gap, I am worried this will cause an issue later. Please can you explain why you glue the boards.. sorry Im probably not on the right video. keep the great videos coming.
Not sure what you have read, but when you glue the t&g boards they become one big sheet. Expansion would be on the full sheet, but if you think about it, once you fix the board mechanically, it can not move any way. Always glue them
Great video. I’m planning to build one like this but its going to around 30m2. I read online that structures between 15-30m2 need to be made mostly from non combustible materials. Surely a timber frame with cedar cladding doesn’t meet this requirement, or is it ok?
Never heard tgat one mate, and being building these years, if it’s within 1mtr of the boundary, it’s gotta have a non combustible wall, but it’s never checked

Why is the cladding laid vertically when the tongue and groove would allow less water into the joints if it were laid horizontally?
You mention expansion and movement for small pieces around the window... Why don’t you need to leave a mm spacing between boards to allow for expansion of each board on the big areas?
Hi how did you go round the 22 degree angle with the rubber roof? Also could you send me the measurement you use to get all these rooms under 2.5 please I’m sure I’ve seen a vid when you showed all the measurements but I can’t find it haha

Great video, could you give me some knowledge on why lath is used going vertically and horizontally? Have a project on and want to make sure I am doing everything right. :-) doing horizontal cladding tho
The first (vertical) battens create an inch airspace to allow air to circulate and dry any any damp, and allows a free path down for any rain ingress. It is important to have a clear gap at the bottom to allow water out. (You can get perforated bottom edging for this.)

i'm not sure about the cedar, but it's a Paslode (IM50?) by the looks of it, amazing bits of kit
Cedar finishes at 18mm, nail gun is paslode 18g im50 , quality bit of kit

For those who are interesting in building these garden rooms DIY to the high spec that these are, you are looking at a minimum of £550 per square metre in plan. Just a word of advice when you are considering size.

B24FIT Fitness & Nutrition when I used to do pub refits, we painted half the feature walls in a fire retardant liquid, it was exspensive but satisfied building control, I just don’t get the thinking on this, you can put a shed next to a fence and store your petrol mower etc in there, but you can’t eith one of these 🤷🏻♂️
