    I have my first ever marathon in February, but last weekend's long run was 42.5km to get a feel for the distance. Biggest issue for me was boredom! You're lucky to have your dad come along, he's great!
    What blows me away watching runners at your level is how effortless you make paces like 3:20km/min look. I only hit that pace for maybe 20-30 seconds during a stride and I reckon I look like I'm about to die 😅

    • @Ryan.Thomson
      @Ryan.Thomson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah even when he keeps his jokes to himself, just knowing there’s someone there with you helps a lot. Do you listen to any podcasts or music? I think that would really help for the training days. I wouldn’t expect you’d feel the same boredom when race day comes. Marathons really are amazing days!
      Haha, thank you! I’ve been doing this for a really long time. If you just keep stacking the consistent training weeks you’ll be amazed at how much you can improve!

      @@Ryan.Thomson I'd just watched your previous video (15 running tips) a few days before and actually grabbed a few of the podcasts you mentioned on that. Got through a few episodes of 5 Miles Easy during the session.

    Impressive fitness, but I’d reconsider your recovery diet… there’s got to be healthier choices than Snickers bar!
    I get it, though! On the one hand you’ve totally earned all the junk food you got after 48 km… on the other, after such a great workout, you’d want to be able to absorb it… berries for oxidative stress, some sweet potatoes to replenish carbs and salmon or other source of protein… 🤷‍♂️

    • @Ryan.Thomson
      @Ryan.Thomson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I definitely try to eat as healthy as possible but I think post hard long run it's just about getting something in as quickly as possible. I find the protein bars give me something to look forward to and I can face them. I probably couldn't face a proper meal for at least an hour after this which would definitely be outside the recovery window

    When I started running back in the mid 70's, all the old boys who were 2.30+ runners, advised me to do a VERY long run as the culmination of marathon training, like 28-30miles.
    But that idea fell out of favour during the 1980's marathon boom

    • @Ryan.Thomson
      @Ryan.Thomson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the big volume approach to running at all distances fell out of favour for a while. The results speak for themselves though as so many guys from the 70s and early 80s are still well up in the UK all time lists. 9 of the top 11 in the road 10K are from the 80s which is a pretty crazy stat that I just noticed when fact checking myself haha

    • @shawfield
      @shawfield 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Guys who ran marathon times 'way back then', off regional-standard 10k times that would make todays top 10 rankings.
      We dont seem to get that many regional standard guys these days doing this - Which makes John Graham's well publicised comment that 'these days they dont train hard enough' ring true. There are quite a few more such performances not included as their 10k times don't seem to be readily available.

      Glad to say I recognise quite a lot of these names through conversations with my dad over the years. I’m probably biased but I think in the past few years some people have gotten back into proper hard training and the results are showing that. Strong run Ryan your progressing is looking good you should try and get a sports massage once a week or a fortnight if you can afford it keeps the niggles away and helps loosen your tightness on your legs and body good luck with the rest of your training Ryan l use to run a lot on the canal from cadder Glasgow to bishopbriggs out to kirkintilloch 🙏

    • @Ryan.Thomson
      @Ryan.Thomson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A strong run, but it's important not to run the race before the race. Beta fuel gel is caffeine free, except for nootropics!? I also hope to run in Valencia...Good luck!

    • @Ryan.Thomson
      @Ryan.Thomson  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fully agree with not running the race before the race but I can definitely say that this is not an example of that haha. You’re probably right about the caffeine. I just checked the label on the apple flavour and assumed all flavours contained it. Thanks and good luck to you too!!
