The Man (1972) | James Earl Jones is the First Black President |

  • The Man is a 1972 American political drama film directed by Joseph Sargent and starring James Earl Jones. Jones plays Douglass Dilman, the President pro tempore of the United States Senate, who succeeds to the presidency through a series of unforeseeable events, thereby becoming both the first African-American president and the first wholly unelected one. The screenplay, written by Rod Serling, is largely based upon The Man, a novel by Irving Wallace. In addition to being the first black president more than thirty-six years before the real-world occurrence, the fictional Dilman was also the first president elected to neither that office nor to the Vice Presidency, foreshadowing the real-world elevation of Gerald Ford by less than twenty-five months. - Wikipedia

Because of the great James Earl Jones passing yesterday, I watched "The Man" this morning after putting it in my "Watch Later" queue ironically just last week.
I have watched this film three times in the past 50+ years, the first being when I saw it rerun on ABC's Movie Of The Week in 1974.
But this morning's viewing was the only time that I fully understood what it all meant.
    And oh yeah!
I could've just heard my mother lightin' up "Mrs Eaton" at that dinner party... (Whistling in crescendo)
That was when my late mother was at her best, and if someone cut their eyes at her or said something backhanded, that would've been seeing her at her worst...
And PLEASE don't let her have a couple of sips of wine...
    LORD HAVE MERCY!

Wow! What a treat, I never even heard of this film, but am not surprised, Rod Serling has something to do with it! He was a visionary, who always turned the tables on Societal norms! Wonder, whether there is a film conceived about the Trump years & his refusal to concede his loss, for the Presidency, when Biden was elected in 2020. If there is, I do hope someone will post/upload it for all of Us. Thanks for this. I am also re-watching the bio film on Richard Nixon, directed by Oliver Stone, as I watched a video online, in which he talked about that era. Much appreciated. R.I.P. James Earl Jones, a fine actor, who passed away recently - a great loss. ---------- Psalms 27.

This movie I consider it to be one of his greatest pieces of work even though it was of its times of 1972 but it showed us a future that many of us were children of the times would have never thought that within the span of almost 60 years we would see ever again the first movie in the history of this nation and of this world of a black man becoming president of the United States of America. Now ask yourself this question why hasn't this movie ever been read surfaced to show a whole new generation of black Americans???

Yes, not only that, but James Earl Jones remind me of when Obama was elected.
Even though I've always felt that the Presidents job is the hardest job, and I wouldn't want it, but I always felt that those who chose it wanted it. Even though James Earl Jones was just an interim president I thought he would be e 16:56 lated to hold that position, and was very surprised to see his response and nervous ness. That's when he reminded me of Obama how he was placed in a presidency expected to be some miracle worker, trying to put back together a train wreck, America was in. Although Obama, smilingly and confidently did a very fine job to me.
I'll get back to the movie and hope it ends triumphantly. I had to pause from watching for a minute, when he cried at the fireplace. I am so use to seeing James Earl Jones in movies where he's so strong and beautiful, so that was a little hard to take. But I know it's real life, and you can't be strong all the time.

It's bizarre that this movie begins with Jack Benny doing his usual "cheap" routine as stand-up comedy.
Also, this film was co-written by Rod Serling, of "Twilight Zone" fame.

Fun fact: Janet MacLachlan who plays Jone's daughter here, was just 2 years his junior. She was around 38 during the filming and he was 40.

In 1972, White people must have seen this as a horror movie.

mid 70's me remembers that paperback. I loved the premise .. but Irving Wallace said to me .."too commercially shaped". It has merit. The designated survivor premise works well with an academic black with moderate credentials. The Rodney King, George Floyd urgency of the South Africa subplot..? It found plausibility for me. I wish the daughter was more delved into.
