Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, also called The Mad Messiah,[1] is a 1980 television miniseries about the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones, and their 1978 mass suicide at Jonestown. Based on the book by Charles A. Krause, entitled Guyana Massacre: The Eyewitness Account, the film was originally shown on television on April 15, 1980.
This dramatic feature traces the story of Jim Jones and the People's Temple from its roots in Indianapolis in 1953 to the November 16, 1978 tragic mass suicide of more than 900 people in Jonestown, Guyana.
Sparked by rumors from renegade members, Congressman Leo Ryan goes to Jonestown to investigate reports of bad conditions and members being held against their will. With him are members of the press and a few relatives of Jonestown residents. Ryan's visit only increases Jones' paranoia, and only one of his blindly devoted followers ambushes Ryan's party at the airstrip as they are preparing lo leave.
Jones, who knows his movement has reached the end, congregates his people (many of them unwilling) for mass suicide.

My husband is from Guyana. My MIL says she remembers this very well, the land has now been taken back over by nature.
Kinda poignant really, maybe nature can somehow cleanse that land. I have heard the people in Guyana didn't want them there, understandable.
They thought they could grow crops, but the locals told them it wasn't possible, and it wasn't.

I saw this movie in my teens and also on People Magazine investigates on Cults they did one on Jim Jones. Here were some of the best words by Laura Johnston Kohl who was Jim Jones staff member when she said "That's not suicide that's murder he murdered everybody." Well spoken words Kohl.
No disrespect for this lady at all because she is deceased, but when she got out of this cult, she jumped back into another one. You would think she would've learned from what happened with Jim Jones. but no, she walked into another one because if I recall correctly, "That's where I fit in, being told what to do, when to do it." I saw this when I was approximately 5 or 6 years old and this show traumatized me. I couldn’t tell if it was real or a movie but then I recognize Randy Quaid and it says “based on the true story”. It’s shot like a documentary that’s why it fooled me! But this is how I was taught about never “drink the kool aid”
The guy on a tragedy the story of Jim Jones is a movie to stay with me for a long time and it never gets old I enjoy watching it every time I see it Powell's Booth Lavar Burton Irene Cara Rosalind Cash and Madison Claire and Brenda Vaccaro were all superb stalls in this movie thank you for allowing me to see such a great film
The sad thing is, Jones started out with very good intentions. He believed in what he was doing and really wanted to help everyone. He was doing all the right things, but he was trying to move too fast. The extreme racial tensions at the time worked against him. He had to come up with something to overcome that, and that's when he went sideways. Evidently, "Father Devine" encouraged Jones to use whatever was necessary to bring wealth to his church, whether that was women or convincing members of his flock to give up to him everything they had. We know the rest.

This movie had a HUGE impact on my childhood and entire life...I SO appreciate my mother for not deciding that I was too young for this. The fact that this was a real life event is still unbelievable but a lesson in being absolutely careful who you consider a leader and who you follow. I don't really "follow" religious or political figures to this day...and who knew what 2016 would bring back then? Everyone should be aware of cults. I'm glad I learnt at an early age.
This is good movie. It has that weird late-'70s bad-acid vibe that's totally appropriate to the subject matter. It's worth remembering that for every person who allowed themselves to be taken over by this monster, there were probably dozens who recognized that he was controlling weirdo.
When I moved to SF just three months after this happened, one of the first places I visited was Jones' by-then abandoned People's Temple out on Geary Blvd. A repurposed 1920's Synagogue, it faced the street with a big arched doorway flanked by large stained glass windows; and above hung a cheap florescent-lit plastic sign reading PEOPLE'S TEMPLE in big red letters... that somebody had already shattered by heaving a brick through it. As SF Housing Commissioner, Jones himself was tightly connected to City Hall and in particular his best buddies Dianne Feinstein and Harvey Milk. The irony was that Milk and Mayor George Moscone were both gunned down on the second floor of City Hall just nine days after Jones blew his own brains out in Guyana. So that old town was fairly reeling when I arrived and everywhere you went people still whispered about the ugly details of both events, many of which went unreported by the press..
And I totally agree that Powers Boothe is spooky-good in his portrayal... to the point of channeling him! But what this miniseries doesn't make fully clear is how Jones used his total influence to sexually abuse members of his congregation including women, men, minor girls and boys alike.
Another sad thing that went unnoticed in the press at the time was the shabby reception some of those bodies received once they came home to Oakland, since more than a few families were so ashamed at what happened to their loved ones they barely held any funeral at all. And even as recently as several years ago, when an Oakland cemetery built a new memorial the victims were again briefly in the news as a few names were still omitted at the request of the family.
So: this excellent film's title says it all: it WAS a tragedy in more ways than one!
TRIVIA: Guyana even has a lasting place in pop culture with the phrase "don't drink the Kool-Aid!"... even though in reality it was the cheaper brand of Grape Flavor-Aid.
BTW: Am I the only one who noticed they misspelled "November" in the opening titles? But, I'm hoping that was just a subtle jab at Jim Jones and not an accident!
I heard and read in many places that Jim Jones was very into the man-on-man action, it seems natural he was drawn to San Francisco. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't just the teenaged girls he molested in Guyana. We'll never know for certain.

I remember there was an awards show being boycotted during a strike I think. Powers Boothe was the one guy who showed up to pick up his award. “You don’t mind if I take some time here?” he said, getting some nice applause. I recall it was for this movie, and I thought this charming guy played the very evil Jim jones. Never watched this movie but had it in mind to watch it for boothe’s performance so I’m here on TH-cam all these years later.

Seems like Jim did some good early in his career, then really lost his way.

If he would had stop before he starting beating ppl, having affairs & claiming he was God; Jones could have went down as 1 of the greatest philanthropist & civil rights activist of the 70's. If "your own worst enemy" was a person it would be Jones. The problem was he didn't want to go alone. So he murdered those ppl for nothing. 1 night he had a meet there & ask who all wanted to commit suicide; Tim Carter testified that only 3 ppl raised their hands. Also just think of the tremendous loss of life; just the senseless death of all those ppl. In some cases whole bloodlines were wiped out!
I was 13 years old when this happened and it always stuck with me. On the one hand it was almost inspiring to see a man lead so many others in a powerful way. Yet it was always haunting at how the guns Jim Jones equipped his camp with for security changed the direction they were pointed from outward to inward. From the air above the settlement, a helicopter captured footage of hundreds of bodies sprawled across the grounds. It was truly a gruesome sight to see. Images so stark and horrifying i don't think the news media will ever try to capture them again. This event and the 1980 massacre at the San Ysidro McDonald's restaurant will forever remind me just how badly things can go so horribly wrong.

On the surface the things Jim Jones said at the beginning about equality are great, but when he picked members of the church to be hall monitors he only picked white members. You can see this at 1:02. Maybe originally he believed in equality in some way, but he mostly preyed on people who were poor and disenfranchised and desperate and promised them power when they had none. All it got them was death or fear. I feel bad for the members, I think they weren't crazy cultist but really people who wanted to make the world a better place. Who I blame is Jim and his closest allies in Jonestown.

Even though this story didn't actually take place in Jonestown, I know people who felt that way about someone after a death.
And to see this woman get drugged and taken away for having real human emotions - to me- is more impacting on a human level than the rest of this movie.
I know what happened in Jonestown. I've read deeply about it. But never watched this movie until last night.
The scene where the young man gets put in the box is perhaps the most powerful demonstration of Jones power in this movie.
But this scene with the poor woman being drugged over realizing the truth gets over looked sadly.

I met this one girl in my boot camp who always talked about Jim Jones... she said she had left her 3 children with her mom, who was in Jonestown... then in 1978 she and I were in San Diego in training class... she was called out of class... a few minutes later, we heard this screaming... I ran out of the class to her... she had just learned her mom and her 3 children were dead... the base clinic sent a corpman and a doctor with an ambulance to take her to the hospital. I stayed in contact with her for a couple of years. But then I heard she had taken her life... when I hear about Jonestown or Jim Jones I see the photo she showed me. It was her, her mom and her 3 children. The photo was taken in Jonestown...😢

I was involved in a church in Davis, California. One of the sisters left Davis and went to a church in Oakland and they were to migrate to S. America. I remember when it happened in 1978 and since that time I have wondered if she went and was among the casualties.

He should've played it smart and kept those people alive and Jones fooled long enough to really save everyone.

My grandmother told me about Jim Jones as a kid. When she raised us, she didn’t like us going to church except for when I go with my grandparents. She never took us to church because one of our family members used to be a part of peoples temple and that was my great great grandma. I’m so glad one of our relatives told her please don’t go to Guyana. I remember a similar situation as an adult at church. It was communion day and we had not one but two pastors because we lost our church. So the pastor who was pastoring told us to take our communion to our seats. My pastor at the time says no no no. I want all of y’all to stand right in front of me I don’t want no Jim Jones situation.
But Jim Jones was not a priest or a Christian. He was a COMMUNIST.
Part of my family perished over there. I will never forget the day we found out. My beloved mother's favorite brother perished, my mother was never the same. She felt guilty, because her brother asked her, if he should marry the woman who sent them to their graves. But my mother was just a kid when he asked her that. My favorite Aunt she said she was going to sell her house and go over there. Her oldest daughter put her foot down, told her she was Not going to sell anything, and was Not going anywhere. Thank God she listened. She felt guilty the remaining of her life as well. She would get sick every year around the time they perished. I'm sure there was some survival guilt as well.
My family that perished over there was going around trying o get the rest of us to join in the maddness. Excuse me, I should say my uncle's wife was trying to do this. Calling that devil father, listen to his lies, sell our homes and give him the money. Stand on corners beg for money to give to this devil. And to go with them whe he told them California was going to fall in the ocean. The government was coming for them and they must flee to South America. Btw South America is surrounded by water. All the unclean/sexual immoral stuff this devil did.
My ucle wife was the reason they perished over there, she did some business that was Not right. I always felt sorry for my under age cousins who had no choice. My grown cousin took his girlfriend and her four children. My cousin who was 18, got off the bus before it left, with another girl. They told them they had to go to the bathroom and kept walking. That is the only reason why they are alive today. Even though my grown cousin, (her brother) over there wrote letters to her, telling her to come, that their mother was sick. She went around asking some of our Aunts should she go. And one told her if you go you won't come back.
My uncle wife kept trying to get one of my aunt's to go to that demonic church. She finally did. That devil was coming down the aisle and my uncle wife said "here comes the father, touch the hem of his garment". My Aunt said I don't want to touch that N*****.
They worshiped this devil.
My uncle wife thought this devil was really God. The bible says call No man Father.
Jim told her three times he healed her eye sight, so now she can drive. She went out there and caused a massive pile up. You would of thought something would of registered after the first time he told her she was healed, but nope. My uncle, had his reasons for going over there.
That picture of all them lying on their stomachs dead. I still till this day be looking at it to see if I can see my uncle and my two little cousins. And that recording of that woman talking to Jim that serpent, right before they died. She was saying she understood why they had to drink the Kool aid, but she did not think the children had to. I be wondering was that my uncle's wife talking. It reminds me of her.
There are many like Jim Jones, many before and after him. This has made me very cautious about preachers/churches my ears/eyes stay wide open and I listen/look to hear/see if they have Jim Jones in them, that spirit, if they do my feet get to running, running fast !!!!!!

When I was a kid we went to Jones' church in Indiana. I remember him as a dark figure. Something happened one visit, my mom grabbed me and we ran out of his house and drove away, never returning. I don't know what happened.

My uncle begged my dad to borrow some money so he could go to Guyana. My dad told him under NO circumstances would he give him a nickel to follow that false prophet. It was never spoken of again....

The pictures of all those dead bodies laying around out in the open still bothers me to this day. 😭 It just creeped me out and sadden me that almost 1000 people died just because they got sucked by this con-man. 😭

This movie was well played out. In the beginning I was on board with his actions. As it plays out you see the evil grow and I turned on him more and more.
You can see the sparks of greed and evil slowly lighting up in his eyes as the congregation expands. Though clearly a very disturbed individual his entire life, I do think the real Jim Jones _might_ (but on the other hand, maybe not…) have started his movement with good intentions, but he was quickly swallowed up by pride, lust, greed, essentially every part of his very dark half!
What I find interesting with Jim Jones when listening to the handful of tapes, was that he was more aligned with his socialist cause persay than that of "religion". Whereas religions typically use rhetoric like "children of god", "devils", etc., Jones uses phrases like, "aren't we black, proud, and socialist", "revolutionary...", and used the term "capitalists" when referring to his enemies as if they were the equivalent of the devil in his cult (reverse McCarthyism (sp?), lol). He even went on to say there ain't no heaven above so they had to make one down here (jonestown). The "religion" part only really came in when he deifies himself.
Yes. At the end, Jones saw himself as a socialist/communist crusader. He instilled fears in his flock about the "fascists" coming to ex ter min ate them. They committed un-alive to supposedly avoid the "brutal fascists" from attacking them first.
It's not impossible to imagine-- powerful men who were once staunch communists in the former Eastern Bloc are now self-proclaimed Christians and capitalists. The reverse situation could just as easily happen under the "right" circumstances. Jones saw more possibilities in using socialism/communism "commune life" as a way to get his flock to donate everything to him.
Jim Jones used those terms, because most of his congregation was black and blacks use those terms to criticize the “White Establishment”.
I saw this when it came out. I have always felt saddened by this story.. I never understood why they went to the jungle with this evil man. I guess I never will.
They were brainwashed.

They didn't. Most went first and by all accounts, they were happy there. Jones fled the US under suspicion of sexual and financial impropriety 2 years later. He turned the place into a prison camp.
