    Hey Daniel, I'm just starting on this type of tooling. Even though I've done the stamping, I thing doing a video on the steps leading up to the tooling would be good. Also if you would show the proper method of sharpening and stropping the swivel knife. Please and thank you. And as always a great video

    Making mistakes is natural. Knowing how to correct the mistake while leaving it in your project is skill! I’m at the stage in my leather craft where “tooling” is something I really want to achieve. I would really like to see more in depth tooling project videos. Daniel, I can’t count how many times my wife criticized my projects when I thought I was finished only to step back and look at it from a different prospective, my wife’s prospective and the art of give and take resolves the problem.
    Best regards, Richard

    Thanks for the video. My first thought was "those things are LARGE, I don't know anyone who will wear those". I can make the basic cuts but I don't have an artistic bone in my body. When you started adding features there at the end I was lost. Is there any way to help explain how you knew to add that tooling? It would also help me if some of the information was documented in a form I could print out. Thanks again.

    loved this video and definitely want to see more of simple and beginner tooling and i always want to see more jewellery :) decided to add on to this, mistake videos, you made a mistake on here and had a fix, but could these be trimmed down into earrings and if not why not, or how "not" to use certain things and why, or if your tooling leather and you make a mistake is there any way to fix it or cover it or do you really have to start again? Veg tan leather is pretty expensive so fix videos for novices like me would be great as I'm gonna make mistakes :p

    Nice earings. I am a very beginner with only a little experience making a hatchet cover and some gouge covers. It was amazing to see how the details just kept coming and coming and intricate the earings were when finished! Nice.I was wondering about preparing the leather when done.I do not prefer painting but keeping it fresh and preserving it. Also that deer foot looks very interesting. Also I see that you strop on the swede side of the strope and am wondering how sharp you want to get the tool, or not so you do not hammer through it.

    • @DanielReachCreations
      @DanielReachCreations ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I can definitely add those to the list of videos.
      You can use the finished or flesh side for stropping. You just want a nice sharp edge to the blade when you're done. If the blade drags or stutters, you either need to strop it a few more times or moisten your leather.
      When you say "So you don't hammer through it" I'm assuming you're talking about when you're beveling. If you cut roughly 1/3rd of the way through the leather (less for very thin leathers), you shouldn't have a problem with "hammering through it."

    Nice video. My dad passed away last year. He was doing leather work since 1970. He was always told to start a business. But only did it for family and friends. Never charged. I guess relaxing for him. But i received his tools. So i tried starting a project for my two girls( small purses) and what i think is 2- 3 oz or 3-4. Very thin. We i got to the point of stitching. And it just blows out the edges. Big mistake trying that. All the patterns where cut and dyed. 😞. I do have some 8-9 oz. But dont have a skiver tool. My nearest shop is 45 miles away. And im unemployed. So thats out of the question. Wish i learned more from my dad. I have been watching Chuck on here did my first mystery braid and 4 strand braid. 👍

    • @DanielReachCreations
      @DanielReachCreations ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry you lost your dad. I can imagine thats very difficult. Learning leather craft has to feel like a way to keep him with you though. For the 8-9 oz leather, you could make a belt for them. Just add spots and decorative rivets. That would add a lot of shine, which young girls usually love. Keep at it...lots of projects you can do when you're new to leather crafting.

    Thank you for these videos. I really do appreciate them.
    I’m a total newbie at leatherwork. I bought the tools, books on leather work, various leather thicknesses and I’ve been watching TH-cam videos. One thing i find is no one tells you which leather is being used. To say “ a thicker leather” is not helpful, as i bought 5 ounces or 10 ounces.it’s confusing for me. Give specific parameters please! If there is a specific video on that subject, not general but for carving use between 4 and 6 ounces… I’d love to find it! . I’m sure most others will think it obvious, but this is the reason why I’m not working the leather. I have practiced on scraps but when i go through i don’t know if it’s too much pressure or leather is not thick enough. I have found that videos from “leather people “ go through this part so fast i can get frustrated and just move on to something else.
    Thank you so much

      Lots of great ideas, and great feed back for me. Love the idea of a steampunk tophat.

    I am just learning. How do you get good clean edges when you cut out patterns? I have tried using a straight edge and utility knife. But I almost always have to sand it to try and get it straight. What grit do you use when sanding?

      Simple answer to your question, is to use a very sharp blade, and make multiple passes over it, letting the blade do the work. That being said, it's still very common to need a bit of sanding to smooth it out perfectly. It's so common, that Weaver even sells machines for it.

      Agreed! I hope I never get so arrogant that I think I can't learn something from everyone.

    why pick just one since this is for beginners why not have both tooling and airbrushing to get people a taste of both since many will be tooling and painting
