Daniel you’re on the right track! Anyone out there wanting learn “tooling” my advise is to listen closely to Daniel!
I think this format is helpful and really shows exactly what you are talking about. It also is refreshing to watch something other than flowers and vines being tooled in a tutorial.
I think it would be fun to see a bunch of people tool the same image (not necessarily this image) as a contest or something and demonstrate the value of different levels of experience, styles and techniques using the same image. Then after showcase some of the images and talk about how they helped/hurt the end result. Just a thought.

I really appreciate the use of the tablet to highlight what you are doing, and what direction you're doing it in. It makes it much easier to follow and for a beginner like myself I find it easier to picture what my bevels are going to look like without potentially ruining my project!
In this day and age of the computer age, It actually makes this more comprehensive and understandable how to do things when you incorporate the tablet...

Daniel, I think this way is perfect for not only the newcomer but also the intermediate leather crafters that are now perusing tooling for the first time. I’m one of the later ones that felt it was time to get into tooling. The problem, is that there are very few places out there that take tooling one step at a time teaching as you go. Putting out a tooling pattern that we can download is a great way to do it. That way we’re all on the same page together. Hopefully when we’re all done, our pattern will look as good as yours or close to it!

you asked for comments on the format. I like it. I, being a somewhat experienced leatherworker, and a pencil, paint, woodburning artist, not to mention a little cocky, I figured there wouldn't be anything "new" on the subject. HOWEVER, I was refreshed on the fact that...just because it's a single line on "paper" (or pad), doesn't mean you always follow the line the entire length. in short, where you switched from one side to the other , of his mustache, leant a different depth than following the entire length of the mustache line, on the same side. On other channels, I would say the tablet and amount of detail would be a little overkill. Here it works. I come here for this kind of detail and level of information.

I REALLY like the use of the design on the tablet, then showing what you will do with the tools. Could you zoom in a little closer to the tool when working? YES! Let's see this painted.
EXCELLENT video on demonstrating which side of the line to bevel. I had never heard of switching sides and the tablet was particularly helpful in understanding the concept. The use of the tablet was helpful throughout the video as a teaching tool in showing in detail what you were going to do and why, before you actually did it.
The tablet is a great idea. Especially with something like this, where it may not be as obvious. I would've totally messed up with the nose to mustache transition. Beveling on opposite sides of the same line isn't what everyone teaches, and when I get going it's like I've got tunnel vision, not noticing such subtle changes. It makes it much easier to plan the next move on a pattern that is new. I wish I'd have thought of doing this when I first got into tooling.

Well as i beginner im liking this format as you call it ,as a viewer, watching theses tutorials ,its vary hard for us to see that kind of detail,As i get the reasoning for doing the beveling or shading the outline of a pitcher on the outside ,to make the pic stand out ,but its when you get the lines that run inside the pic ,like 2 lines that run up and down or beside each other as in vine work.hope that came out right lol
I totally get that! So two things. I'm doing my best to get you the closest shot I can while still having it in focus. Working on getting closer.
And...I think we're going to do a floral design version of this video... We've gotten a few comments like yours, so I think it makes sense.

The use of the tablet is fine. Nice balance between 'preparing for the tooling' then the tooling. I just wish there were a couple of really tight shots in real time to show the effect of the tool on the cut line. I have a huge monitor but I am probably missing how you angle the tool and how you overlap the taps.
I totally get what your saying. One of the challenges I run into is getting tight shots that are still in focus. Just know that I'm trying to get you the best shot possible while still maintaining good video quality.

love the new format, from a newbie with this craft it answered questions I would otherwise would have had. I do have one question though, how did you get the pattern to the leather?
I am very new to the craft, for me it would have been helpful to see up close what tool you were using. The links provided don't show the tool, sometimes it only shows the impression the tool makes. I love your grumpy guy :)
I like the tablet shots. Thank you for these Daniel. I'm getting more confident to start carving. I've been leatherworking for a while but never carved only stamped. Weaver has a new tool for hair, does it work for human hair like this? These videos are very helpful and I appreciate you for doing them and taking your time.

The short answer is yes.. the hair blade is great for this and were going to get pretty deep into that in the next video.

Very nice teaching experience I'm new my problem is which way to hold the beaver is it flat side toward you or away
I'm not sure which side you're considering the flat side, but if you think of it like a hill...(up hill / down hill) the highest part of the hill should be closest to you, and the bottom of the hill is the part that creates the bevel.
Maybe a better analogy would be that it should look like it's standing on its tip toes. Does that help?

Well for tooling id say its a good format to do the reference and the actual work. Id also say that this is definitely not something for all projects though.

Is there any time you would consider using a figure carving beveler? Maybe around the stick and the outside of the guy and other areas.
Yes! Absolutely! I typically use my figure carving bevels in areas I want to blend. Lots of ways to use them, but that the most common ways I use them.

What’s the difference between a standard bevel punch and a steep angle bevel punch. What was the part numbers of both bevellers that you used
A traditional bevel is almost flat, where a steep bevel is about a 45 degree angle. An extra steep is almost vertical.

I do artwork in all medias, but I have never seen anyone use the drawing glove for tooling leather. I have several of them. Do they help when tooling? Just curious. I am ready to start tooling and I will use glove if you think there is a benefit to it. The video is great. Tooling is very much the same as wood burning as I can see in this video. That should help me as I start as I have done tons of wood burning since I was a kid. (I'm old now. Teehee) Thanks for sharing. Stay well.

The glove was only for the tablet. When I'm tooling leather, I don't use it. 🙂
@@DanielReachCreations Oh. That's what I use it for on my Wacom tablet. Hey, when you do art stuff these days, anything goes. It's not the old days when everything had its own purpose and don't go outside of those lines. That's how I grew up and my dad always laughed at me when I did things differently. 1960's. More of the detail, please! You wrapped the tool in burlap? I get the swivel cuts and spoon marks in the beard/mustache, don't you care for the hair tools, or just a preference? Coloring - paints, or dyes, or both? But show it in blow-up detail, some of us only have phones, not full-size monitors ...(holding hand up in the peanut gallery!) SHOW ALL THE TECHNIQUE, AS DETAILED AS POSSIBLE, PLEASE. Thanks for your help!
All great questions. Let me take them one at at time.
More detail: One of the challenges is to get all the detail in and still have a video length that is appealing to most people. The solution is to do a mix of "project" focused videos and "tips and tricks" related to tooling. That will allow us to have a library of all the info and avoid the hour long videos. Things like the "burlap" will definitely be a "tips and tricks" video. In fact...I think its coming up in the near future.
Swivel cuts/spoon vs hair blade: Yes! The hair blade is a great option. The video coming out next Monday goes into great detail on how to develop hair texture and how to best use the hair blade. This was just a sneak peek at how to do it.
Color: Thats one of the upcoming videos as well. I know how important that info is as someone who wants to learn. So, I'm doing my best to get it to you in time blocks that are easy to digest.

Technically, yes. But it's going to take a lot longer and won't have as much depth. But yes, there's a lot you can do with just a modeling spoon
That looks like a big - time consuming project. How long does the casing usually hold up? Do you have to re-case the leather after some time?
You may have to re-wet the leather a little bit if it dries out as you are carving and stamping. But, you don't have to redo the tooling and stamping, that will stay as long as the item itself.

Use of red or purple was good to be inside or outside was good but I still got lost.

and who says an hour long video wont work? I much prefer longer, more detailed explanation type videos over short ones with less info.
@Weaver Leather Supply - Ya'll need to get out of this "shorter is better" mindset. Anyone that is truly interested in this craft more than likely has a longer attention span than a gnat. If a video is less than 10 minutes, i typically dont bother watching them. I want REAL info!
