- This is how we take care of our ASF Rats (African Soft Fur). In this video we show you from start to finish on how we care for our ASF'S, We start off by showing you all of the substrate that we use, and go on to show you the types of tubs we use for our main rack and our growout rack. After that we show you how we set up our tubs and go on to show you the process of transferring our ASF's into their new tubs. Lastly we show you how we feed them and the protein we use.

Hey boys, I breed my own rats as well. I was told in the beginning that cedar and pine could be deadly to your rodents. I guess they give off some oils that are toxic to rodents. Just passing some advice to brother breeders! I use aspen and sani chips!
What are "Sani Chips" we breed and use pine,pellets, ammonia powder, and meadow grass/hay. I'm always looking to for ways to make breeding rodents easier.
Kiln dried Pine and Aspen are completely fine, Cedar is toxic though.
Most of the pine Is Kiln dried so it's not a problem..... the cedar is also kiln dried but I don't think I would choose to use it..... Aspen is OK but it's really dusty and molds when it gets any moisture on it and the dust could cause respiratory issues
Kiln dried pine (has been processed a certaiin way to neutralize phenols and other aromatic oils) is great, but you are absolutely right for cedar. It's to be avoided altogether.
Aspen is also my preferred shavings!

Cedar is to be avoided all together; phenols are aromatic oils are so high, it can affect their respiratory systems and death is a possible outcome.
Pine is great for some species of rodents like ASFs, but make sure it’s KILN DRIED, which means it’s been processed a certain way to eliminate/neutralize phenols.

Cheap tube socks or panty hose fill with Cedar Chips and zip tie to the racks, benefits of cedar smell not in the bin

Great video! I heard the cedar chips can also help with repelling mites and fleas when mixed with their bedding. Have you found that to be true? Have you had any issues with the cedar since posting this video?
Cool video guys. I'm curious how many jump out when your swapping tubs? We breed rats in a rack like that but our ASFs are in tanks. Those little asfs are freaking jumpy. Lol.
We've thought about moving our ASFs to racks though. Again, I just worry about them jumping out or chewing thru the plastic.

What size chicken wire do you use on the side where food is? Do you change it from the rest of the wiring on lid or is it the same across the whole top ?
Nice set-up. I like the space-saving tall racks you're using and the way you have their food at the top!
For bedding I use Hemp for my Norway rats and a product called Bedding Buddy which is a natural mineral product in fine powder form to absorb ammonia. Mine are in bin cages and also some in Critter Nation cages with a bucket watering system similar to yours, and I use steel trays with a 3 inch height in my Critter Nation cages that are made by Bass Equipment. I like them much better than the shallow plastic trays that come with the Critter Nations. They are a little pricey but well worth it because they can't be chewed, and are relatively easy to clean.

Vanilla extract pure vanilla extract helps take away a neutralize the ammonia smell in my ASFs my rats my hamsters my gerbils my ferrets too and my male dogs I got two male dogs that they're urine is geez could knock you off your ass cuz it drink so much water but male dogs especially have that strong odor and I give vanilla to all of them and it literally works I highly recommend it it's by Foodtown quality and value one fluid ounce but I'm sure you can get a bigger one but that's what I use in my water for my animals
ASF rats are absolutely no joke LOL I kept one as a p e t I keep Burmese pythons my roommate has ball pythons we went and got feeders one day and I felt bad for this particular one and he was actually kind of cool he was a lot chubbier than the rest of the asf's we named him a Capone well one day I was petting Capone he seemed like he was being as nice as could be until he turned around and latched on to my finger I got startled as hell of course I wasn't expecting it let me tell you if I had to choose I would take a bite from a large ball python or an 8-ft Burmese python any day that dude held onto my finger and was dangling in the air their teeth are absolutely no joke and they mean business LOL needless to say I don't pet Capone anymore😂
