Excellent video, mine failed in the parking garage at work, I did have to use a 1/4” drive to take the 13 mm nut off because there wasn’t enough space for my 3/8” drive set. This was an excellent source for information, and was able to change out right there where it failed.
Just some advice. I just did my first one. No need to drop the driveshaft as stated in some videos. I used a long flat screwdriver to pry the positive lead off and then bend it to put it back in place. The 13 mm nut is a pain with a rachet. I took the 3/8 socket and attached a small needle nose visegrip to it and that made it so easy to tighten without cursing. Honestly. Its a 30 minute job on the floor.
If you have a non-lifted JK, make sure to raise the vehicle with a jack or lift. This will help move the front driveshaft out of the way far enough to get the bolts out. Also, make sure to spray the bolts with some penetrating fluid because if they haven't ever been removed like mine, they are usually stuck in there pretty good.
God damn I wished I had read this first! I did this on my buddies jeep the other day and this makes total sense. We struggled to get both 15 mm bolts out but we got them, getting creative! This makes all the sense!!! That little bit of drop from the front drive shaft would have REALLY, REALLY, helped!!!
Can I get this explained cuz I have been trying to remove this bolt for a week and I can't get it at all I have a right angle drill and all the things and I can't get in there to remove it I have a jack and have lifted my jeep but that doesn't seem to do anything
My jk left me stranded the other day down the street from my house! When I tried to start it the power sounded weak to start! So I thought it was the battery! So I went and got a new battery and it started! The next day I was gonna go somewhere and it clicked and made a winding noise! So my guess the starter was starting to go, so I replaced it with a new one. Then about a week later it left me stranded at the post office! At this point im getting so frustrated and pissed off!! After messing around with the ignition and wiggling the key, by luck have it! It started again! So I drove back home park it in the garage, turned off and when I tried to start it back up! It just went “click” nothing!! Just “click” so im scratching my head at this point! And doing some research on the internet looking for some others that had this similar issues as mine! Found out that some people had issues also with the ignition switch, so I went out to the local part store and got a new ignition switch! Replaced it! And again! Nothing happened! So by now im so pissed off that im wondering if I have a gremlin on my Jeep! So to top it off the parts store doesn’t take back the ignition switch because it’s been installed on my Jeep and removed! So they call it “used” now my thoughts where! What do I do now?! After looking at all the fuses and cables, everything looked fine! So I left it like that and went to rest for the day! The next day im thinking to myself! I wonder if the wires that connect to the starter are loose!? So I disconnected the negative on the battery, lifted the Jeep and got under to check for loose wires! To my luck! After scratching my head and wasting money on a new starting switch! The wire with the connector that connects to the starter solenoid was loose! Somehow I didn’t connected right when replacing the starter! It came loose, somehow I broke the locking pin that helps the connector stay in place. So just to let some others that have this similar issues! Make sure you connect the plug connector to your starter solenoid correctly and make sure that you don’t brake the plastic lock tab that keeps it in place, otherwise wise when your driving and stopping and turning the Jeep back up! That wire will get loose and leaves you stranded! Great video though!
NOTE: There is a spacer/gasket between the starter and the trans. When I removed the starter this part slipped into to trans preventing the new starter from sliding on. It took me an hour to figure this out. In all of the videos and blogs I looked at regarding starter replacement this part isn't mentioned.
Great video. I appreciate the good camera angles. I've replaced starters before but never on a JK. I just wanted to make sure that I knew where everything was located.
Good video, man. My 2013 crapped out on me four days ago. I have tested my battery and alternator, and my cables are good. My next step will be to pull the starter and take it to a place to be tested. I have worked on my 2003 TJ for years, but my JK is only four years old and has never needed any sort of attention from me beyond installing my lift and the typical Jeep aftermarket goodies; zero mechanical or electrical issues until this. So I am very unfamiliar with the JK's various systems. Your video will help me get the starter motor off this afternoon. Thank you for posting this. Good job!
Looking around for ideas. Assuming a bad starter would be good battery, but turn key and nothiing happens? Because, that is my symptom. I thought it was the battery at first, but trying to jump now and turn key and nothing. Any input appreciated of things to check. Other option maybe ignition not sending signal to starter, but instrument display does change when I move from on to start, so I'm assuming it's not that.
Since I found the answer to my own problem, I figured I'd post here to help others who might have same issue. Red light on dash is anti-theft device. No idea how it activated, but found another video that said pull out the fuse, wait 30 seconds and put it back in. Did that and it started right up. Thanks Internet.
Jeff M I tried this fuse pull out thing and my 2014 still won’t start, should I get a new battery first, (battery is Original and 5 years old) and then try the Fuse removal for 30 second? Or should I just get a new starter and and hope this is the issue? Thanks in advance. My 2014 wrangler Sahara unlimited has 46 thousand miles, battery NEVER gave me issues and started up in the AM, drove 1/4 mile to get coffee, came out jumped in the Jeep and TURNED the key and then NOTHING! I am the original owner and I am frustrated. Please help.
@@MARKLINMAN1Did you figure out why your 2014 Wrangler wouldn't start? I am in an almost identical situation. My Jeep Wrangler is a 2015 with 46,000 miles. I tried disconnecting the 20 Amp fuse for 30 seconds & then plugged it back in. Tried turning the key & nothing happened. Then I tried my spare key that I never used before and the third turn of the key, then it started. Red security light was blinking while it was running so then I switched back to the other key and then the red light stopped blinking while it's running. I changed the battery in both keys and changed my Jeep battery. Try to start it again and nothing happened. I'm gonna try to pull out the 20 Amp fuse for 30 seconds to maybe reset the security system tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work, then I'm thinking it's the starter relay or the starter itself. Let me know how you resolved the problem with ur Jeep, thankyou.
in one video for 2013 jeep wrangler they said to disconnect the positive cable on battery, but this video shows the negative cable being disconnected before replacing the starter. Which one should it be?
Unless you have an air ratchet, you're not getting that top bolt out without removing the drive shaft. No room to swing a wrench. This video clearly has the drive shaft removed before doing the work.
terrific point. I managed to get that top bolt out of my 2009 JK without removing the drive shaft but OMG, what a ***##*** pain in the butt that was. I am putting the OEM from Chrysler back in, hoping I don't go thru this frustrating experience again anytime soon.
Uh yes it is hard when they be showing it's so simple just 15mm and turn..that's not even a little true. If it said the tools needed to properly do this then it would be easy I have what the video has and there is no way that's coming off that way .. without dropping the shaft. I even tried with a right angle drill adapter and it's a real pain
Jeep has a real hard-on for these connectors that goes back a long time. The red tab is a locking clip. It has to be disengaged. Some of them slide out to a stop, some slide all the way out. Some need to be pressed and held in. You have to sort of figure out which type it is. This particular one is the slide type that stays on the connector. If you accidentally snap it off that is okay. 1.) The red piece will still be able to be clicked back into the locked position, even if, when opened, it falls off, and 2.) these connectors tend to be water tight and *very* snug (due to the rubber seal) so something weird would have to happen for it to ever come undone even if the red tab was completely missing. Good luck.
This is not for the 2018, has two batteries and power disconnect located on the passenger side fender between the two for the starter otherwise you still have power to it. Also you will have too remove the driver side engine mount to get it out.
heat shield depends on year or model i think. the video didn't specify year or model but i think this might be for 2012-up or sahara and sport models or vice versa, most likely year though
My 2009 JK came and still has the heat shield. I"m assuming it's there for a good reason, so praying to don't destroy it in the process of working around the blooming drive shaft to get the starter off of this non-lifted JK.
Why the fruit is mine nothing like this? Judging by the extra bolt holes, and the 5in long bolt I had to remove I'd say the dealership cobbed something together
"Same two bolts from a different view, please don't get confused." Best help of all time.
I know. I swear I would have gotten confused.

Yes, helped a lot to lift it! Thank u
I had no problem without lifting it, 2012 JK Sport

I did mine without a jack today. Bone stock jk 2 door. Nearly impossible to get to anything. It happened though.

I’m having the Same problem. How did u fix it
I did'nt find one on mine, its a sport 2013, 3,6 (25k miles, first owner ), should I worry?
Did not find one on my 2012 sport JK
I think that's an automatic transmission issue only
Great video. I appreciate the good camera angles. I've replaced starters before but never on a JK. I just wanted to make sure that I knew where everything was located.
Wow!! You get two thumbs up for this video. Very detail!!! Great lighting, excellent angles and to the point. Thank you!!!
Thanks, I try my best to get good angles

just did mine. thanks for the simple but detail instructions.
You make it look easy brother. I hope when I try it out, it works just like your video. Thanks.
How do you get it out with the 4wd shaft in the way?
Thanks for the video. I use this video to help me change the starter on my JK tomorrow.
NP, its really easy, thanks for the comment
Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for before I tackle the job myself.
Nice video, thanks
What were the torque settings for the bolts when you replaced the starter?
Tight.
Can you jump the starter solenoid on a 2102 jeep wrangler

Couldn't have done it without ya. Thanks! Great vid.
thank you for watching
Do all JK’s 2007-2011 use the same starter regardless of manual or automatic?
Any one who doesn't state the year should have a Carolina ghost pepper jammed up their tailpipe!!
Thanks a million ❤❤. I've just replaced my starter by following your procedures so simple. 👏👏
in one video for 2013 jeep wrangler they said to disconnect the positive cable on battery, but this video shows the negative cable being disconnected before replacing the starter. Which one should it be?
Negative
Exactly what I needed. Thanks my dude!
You need the heat shield on that starter. It's right next to the catalytic converter.
Question. Did you drop the drive shaft to install yours?
Berto264 no, the instalation is really simple, you dont have to remove anything, just the starter or course
My bolts were stuck hard but I got them! Thanks for the video
Great video.. does the new starter has to be oem chrysler starter or can i use aftermarket starts ??
And where is the exhaust in all this?
What brand starter did you had on the jeep .. ??
Hi,,how many miles you had on your Jeep before you replace the starter??
Moses R for me personally I just got mine replaced today on my Jeep Cherokee 05 after 90,000 + miles. 11 years
Went through 3 batteries in that time.
My drive shaft is making hard to get to those bolts
Thanks for this. Super video, made me confident I could do it myself!
Did the red tab on the cable break off for you like it did for me? LOL
Did you end up zip tying it like I did? 😂
@@DonZaloog88 Nope XD Just plugged it together and knew if it didn't start I'd have to crawl underneath and plug it back in
@@DonZaloog88 good idea 👍
Hi,, what time of camera did you use
, or was it a small phone?, really good angles, btw, thanks for reply!
My drive shaft gets in the way I can't get to the top bolt, and almost have no room to unscrew the bolts..
how?
@Seriously! How?
Great Video, Good Instruction. Thank you!

I just changed mine out in a parking garage at work with just hand tools. 2012 JK
Not that hard man just need a decent fine tooth ratchet

Good video! Went really smooth
KingsDisasterGarage thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great how to! You make it look too easy!
thanks,, its my job to make it look like that,, but it was really super easy,, Just 2 Bolts and 1 nut.
Tanks, very good help to solve mi work. thanks again.
