- This is a video recording showing a magnetic compass and its parts (compass bowl, soft iron and hard iron corrector). I have previously put up a video showing the parts of a compass in pictures only. But I thought I will try something new today.

I believe, the Flinders bars has wooden blocks at bottom (seen at the video) and the top has soft iron magnets(partially seen)

the shephees of the magnetic compass only move horizontal? or there other types that can move the position vertical or rotate them? thanks
Only horizontal:)
The spheres used because when we realised we had to adjust compasses with soft iron a huge supply of unused cannon balls were available. The "Flinders bar" is soft iron for vertical adjustments; you could design a compass using "flinders balls" and quadrantal bars.
