Met Neil Young at the Old Time Pickin' Parlor in Nashville one afternoon in '77. He picked out this cherry sunburst thinline Gibson thing that had round holes in the top but no soundhole. It looked like the prototype of a huge mistake. I'm playing a 55 Martin D-28 I eas thinking about buying.
I didn't recognize him at first when he sat down across from me. He was wearing a John Deere mesh pulled down over his eyes. I was playing some bluegrassy thing in A and he starts playing along. Then I hear somebody playing a dobro back behind me. This went on for 4 or 5 minutes. When we stopped he asked, "Whatahyah think of this? Sounds kinda old-timey, doncha think?" I said, "You really wanna know what I think?" He said, "Yeah, I'm thinkin' about buyin' it." Always the diplomat, I replied, "I think it sounds like sht." He looked at me square in the face and started laughing. Says, "Hey Ben, this guy thinks this guitar sounds like sht. lol Ben says, "Well he's right it DOES sound like sht." They laughed, I laughed and all the customers in the place started to laugh, too. I looked around and recognized Ben Keith and it hit me in the gut. My head snapped around and there he was. Neil fckin' Young and he was smiling...at ME. lol He just said, "Hey man, I appreciate your honesty. I've got more money than sense, sometimes." Ben says, "Sometimes?" They both laugh and Neil hangs that pos back up. "Check you later, man. You're a good player." He and Ben walk out and vanish like a couple apparitions. RIP, Ben Keith.

Solo acoustic set on a Martin, followed by blazing electric songs on Old Black, culminating in feedback workouts on long jams towards the end of the night. It's copyrights, not "copywrites". You're telling us, you're a professional studio musician who doesn't know how to spell that word? Neil has never re-recorded and re-released the "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" album with strings on "Cowgirl". It would make absolutely no musical sense to have strings added to that song, since it's a guitar-driven jam with extended guitar solos. Also, that song is included on several of his live albums, including "Road Rock Vol. 1" from 2000. No need to re-record the studio version in 2009.
Neil released the "Archives Vol. 1 1963 - 1972" box set in 2009, with three versions of "Cowgirl In The Sand". The studio version is the original from the 1969 "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" album. The two live versions are Neil by himself with an acoustic guitar, at Massey Hall, Toronto from 1971 - and a 16-minute Crazy Horse band jam from the Fillmore East in NYC in 1970. None of these versions have any violins, violas, or cellos on them. I just checked, in case there was something I forgot since I had last listened to them. I have the box set right here, next to my desk.
Post a Discogs link to the album, your version is supposedly on, please!
      -

Still truckin man. Ok cool ! From Springfield to now. Wow. What a ride you have had as well as myself through all of these years. I think back on the early days of a very cool place, at one time, and that is La Honda. The stories that lay in that tiny spot are as big as the day and small as the night. Later. :O)

This is interesting to hear Dan Rather interviewing some great and seasoned musicians for AXS. I haven’t watched tv in years, so I can’t remember where he came from - but he asks good questions and he’s cool in an old fashioned way - he’s mellow and genuinely interested.
“Hey hey, my my: rock and roll will never die”. I still like Neil Young. Someone has to stick it to Uncle Sam and call him out on his bs. There’s more to life than follow the rules. I mean, sure don’t hurt people obviously - but man I don’t need someone to mandate it and otherwise shove morality down my throat.
