  • VOCES8 performs the Simon and Garfunkel classic 'The Sound of Silence' arranged by Alexander L'Estrange.
    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
Fools, said I, you do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence

I don't think either is straight better than the other (beatbox vs. no beatbox). They are just different styles of music for different tastes and occasions. When you don't have a dedicated beatboxer, you can sing a lot of old music which was written for unplugged performance in big rooms (churches and later concert halls) by bigger choirs where a beatboxer simply would not carry. Personally, I like to be able to have a much more clearer sound of the beautiful harmonies without the beatbox "getting in the way". But overall, I am glad we can listen to both styles and it would be sad if all acapella ensembles would sound the same.

I love the dissonance they pulled out of this song. Like this song is awesome by Simon and Garfield, and somehow a song sung completely different than the original is just so amazing. I think I love both of them because they are almost completely different songs in the ways they sing it. Another glorious job by Voces 8. Also, that base is just ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's really great performance! And I'm really in love with the colour and sound of Sam's voice in "SONGS" in the sentence "people writing songs" - such a heavenly clear tone.
