Mike Oldfield is an amazing talented musical genius .He composed the music and played all the musical instruments in Tubular Bells at seventeen. The musical album for the movie The Exorcist.
Mike Oldfield had some excellent albums. The vocals in this song were performed by Scottish vocalist Maggie Reilly, who had collaborated with Mike Oldfield since 1980.MichaelOldfield is an English former musician, songwriter, and producer best known for his debut studio album Tubular Bells, cheers young lady.
Mike Oldfield has had a prolific career, debuting at age 17 with Tubular Bells, which was used at the theme of "The Exorcist". He spans Folk, rock, prog-rock, new age. Mike does sing, but has often favoured females singers like the featured Maggie Riley, and Cara Dillon. Check out Mike Oldfield's "To France" which also features Maggie Riley, and "Man in the Rain" which was something of a sibling song to Moonlight Shadow, but wasn't released till the mid 90s
Mike Oldfield is a multi-instrumentalist although primarily a guitarist. He famously played all the instruments on his debut album 'Tubular Bells', part of which was used in the horror film, 'The Exorcist'. Although he is not renowned for his singles, 'To France' and 'Flying Start' are well worth hearing. His albums are mostly instrumental but some vocals do appear. I particularly liked the album 'Crises' which featured this song as well as other notable musicians such as Jon Anderson from 'Yes'. The album was one of the first to use synthesizers to good effect. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this track - it's one of my favourites too.
Hi Lulu Great to see your reaction to this classic tune released in 1983. Mike Oldfield is multitalented plays various instruments and has composed some awesome music. You should check out Tubular Bells when he was just a bit older than you are now. Have a fantastic day on Wednesday. I am currently in the Isle of Man watching the TT races. Motorcycle Riders race superbikes on public roads (which are closed during the races) on a small Island between England and Ireland. It started in 1904 or thereabouts and runs for 2 weeks every year. I've been numerous times it's quite an experience. Enjoyed your reaction.
His performance of this live in Berlin (The Art in Heaven concert) is stunning. Miriam Stockley was the vocalist and his guitar playing was just awesome.
It's great to hear that you enjoyed this song Lulu, it us Mike's biggest vocal hit song, he regularly had Maggie Reilly sing his songs, more from them to try are To France and Blue Light. He has another great track called The Time Has Come, which is sung by Anita Hegerland. If you want to hear Mike sing, listen to his song called Heaven's Open. He is more well known for his instrumentals, though, and he is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
He can play most instruments ever made to a very high standard-he played pretty much all the instrument parts on his classic albums like Tubular Bells & Ommadawn. A lot of his music would fall under new age/electronic-but he could certainly rock. Check out his 1981 live performance of Punkadiddle at Montreux.
In most of his songs, since the early 70's he played all the instruments, sang and did the videos himself. In "Portsmouth" you can see him playing all the instruments...
Mike Oldfield is a brilliant songwriter and always has outstanding guest singers on his songs, and his thing seems to be shadows, because they are the subject of at least 2 songs
Mike Oldfield is super talented & can play 25 different instruments on all instrument types, Woodwind, Strings, Brass, Keyboard, Drums, Xylophone, Harp etc. He was the first artist on Richard Branson's Virgin Label back in the Early 1970's. His Tubular Bells is an absolute Classic.
Info Dump: This song is actually about the famous magician/trickster Harry Houdini and his wife. The shadow part of the song is about his wife trying to communicate with him through death. We don't really know what caused his death other than officially it's stated that his appendix ruptured. There's no concrete answer to why. The song (directly stated by Mike Oldfield) was inspired by the movie Houdini which of course is a movie take on the real Houdini. Added Note: Groove Coverage has a really famous cover of this song as well.
Mike Oldfield later said that his lyrics may have been influenced by the death of John Lennon, because he was staying in New York on the night of the murder in 1980.
Its just a really nice song from back in the day, with a typical 80's video! Sadly, I remember the video quite well. I had this on Cassette and played it through my Walkman in the back of the car, me, my mum and dad & sisters could never agree what to play in the car, so the Walkman was a godsend
Hi Lulu, the whole album is worth listening to. 'Crises' was the first time I got to listen a 20 minutes instrumental track, and got hooked to the idea. I was daydreaming a lot at that time (I was 11 or 12) and his music became part of my daydreams OST ^^
Mike Oldfield. Used to live 6 miles away from me in Kington in herefordshire. Tubular bells , his famous album. Hergest ridge popular song To. Pronounced. Har guest ridge.

This a later work by Mike Oldfield - with the greatest of respect to him, he's a phenomenal multi-instrumentallist and a true master of multi-tracking to play ALL the tracks in a song... but he himself has criticised his singing. Working with specialist vocalists as he did for his later albums was one of the best moves. You DO really need to listen to "Tubular Bells" where NOTHING on the album track wasn't performed by him.
I'll never be a dad, but I'll take watching a tween looking at the songs I'd show her as second price. If I had a kid, and she'd react like this, I'd be quite pleased. "Yes, child, enjoy what I provide you. Providing you with things you enjoy makes me happy." Apologies for being weird. 3 AM and my user name is accurate. I just like seeing kids enjoy what I like.
Ommadawn is.... by far.. the best album in the world..... even better than Dark side of the moon. Guilty is good discoid. Crises live is super super rock. Incantations for the brain.
Actually it's not - MO said that might have been a subconscious influence but it's not "about" Lennon - the Houdini influence was more significant, but even with that in mind, he still had to piece the lyric together synthetically with the help of a rhyming dictionary
Other great Maggie Reilly moments - To France which everyone else has mentioned, Oldfield's original version of Family Man, the non-album single Mistake, and, for an example of what Oldfield usually had her do which is just plain scatting, this: th-cam.com/video/JhSnd-Mw34A/w-d-xo.html

It wasn't the musical album for The Exorcist, the producers just happened to use part of it.
musica de una epoca inolvidable e irrepetible... que afortunados los que existimos durante los 80 ♥
Thanks Lulu. Great to hear that song again, came out in 1983, written by Mike Oldfield who plays all sorts of instruments.

You should try "Shadow on the Wall", a Mike Oldfield song featuring the unique and fantastic vocalist Roger Chapman
Maggie Reilly was and is pure class, I recall Mike Oldfield saying this was about the shooting of John Lennon
Crime of passion an understated gem

Mike Oldfield - To France (ft. Maggie Reilly): th-cam.com/video/WLMw9SPcFBI/w-d-xo.html
or To France, also with this singer
In the 70's he had a great tune called Portsmouth, some say this song is a reference to the shooting of John Lennon in December 1980
Try MO's "To France" and "5 Miles Out" ( both with MRs vocal ) & "Man in the Rain" ( with Cara Dillon ).

I can also highly recommend the song Pictures in the DARK
