I started out with a cichlid my brother gave me in a 30 gallon tank. And now I have a 300 gallon I built and have 30 african cichlids and maintenance regularly. I found this legend on TH-cam and learned a lot from your videos when I wanted to learn more about african cichlids so I could have my very own tank like this
Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing your journey with us! 😊💪
Thanks brother, you hit everything right on the head again… I’ve done everything you just said and still doing it is what’s so bad. 😅
At least now you know lol 😁💪
I have a 60 gallon freshwater tank. I have cycled with prime and stability. 7 days. Everything looks good. I have a 306 fluval. Not sure what fish to start with. I'd like super colorful fun fish. ?? Also have a sponge filter in corner.
Done almost all of these. Actually I'm still doing some of these.😅 It's a learning journey for sure... Thanks for looking out for us beginners. You have a great personality and your videos are both entertaining and educational, keep it up!👍🐠
Thank you for that positive feedback! Glad you're enjoying the channel! 😊💪
#11 add too warm or too cold water at water change time. Should be within 4 degrees of tank temperature. Wish I had seen this years ago. 5 stars!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! 😁💪

@@Handygrrl Thanks bro, appreciate that! It’s designed for beginners but very functional for veterans too 😁
I said dang so many time because i did like 4 or 5 of these
Every months detritus come on my tank? Whats the solution?
My wife and I watched hours and hours of unhelpful or conflicting videos before we found your channel. We did the impulse buy and were completely unprepared for the ich, nitrate-saturated water, aggressive cichlid behavior, etc. After several tragic deaths and watching a bunch of your videos, we are finally in a stable place. Thank you!!!
The story sounds very familiar. It's a path many of us have taken. Glad you found the channel and that I was able to help! 😊💪
Kev...my journey started (can't believe I'm going to tell you this)🤣Started when my one of my niece's won two goldfish at a fair! 🤣 She came to me with two plastic bag's with goldfish inside and wanted me to take them! Started out in a bowl! Then... I went to 5 gallon aquarium. Then a 10, 20, 30 to now..71/2 year's later to my 55 gallon tank. Same two fish.Lol.( I'd say these two goldfish are pretty darn lucky) 🤣 The longer I had them, the more I grew into loving this hobby! From 1 thru #10....all me! Found you and your channel and never looked back! Thank you for everything you do!❤❤❤😊
LOL I remember the story well! Those are some spoiled Goldfish!! 🤣🤣 and yes, Very Lucky to have you!! 💪💪
@@KaveManAquatics😊❤❤❤
@lisakinoti1839 I do!! 🤣 Then awhile back I developed a few issue's and started to research online. Came across Kaveman Aquatics channel and watched alot of Kev's video's. Started to do weekly water changes, added a spongefilter which made a world of difference. Been here on Kev's channel ever since. Still learning though! Never in a million year's did I think I'd have these Goldfish year's later! 😂❤️
Just a quick comment in regards to cycling, I don’t have city water I have well water, I’ve literally cleaned the tank and popped the fish in a 30 mins to an hour later after getting air in after filling. I’ve never had to use chemicals without having fish unhappy due to having well water. Take into what type of water you have.
Too funny....do we get bonus points if we have made all the mistakes? I bought a tank with cichlids and a Bela shark without the knowledge I needed for cichlids.
Yup, all the points in the world! 🤣💪
I just set up my sisters fish tank I got when she passed and I think she has given me the fish bug 😂 it was her very first tank and now it is my first tank. I am so thankful I came across Kev! I’m learning so so much, thank you for not judging us newbies 😂❤
Sorry to hear about your sister but glad you have the love for the hobby she also had! This channel will always be kind to beginners because I remember where we all started! 😁 Good luck, and keep learning!
Like he says, if you’re a brand new fish keeper or a seasoned veteran, this guy is absolutely NO bull shit when it comes to advice. Really, you won’t need much else. 😊
Appreciate you bro!!
Saving life's one video at a time ! Straight to the point as usual, great content very useful information and amazing idea on doing a beginners month 👍 d
Thank you bro! I appreciate that feedback! 😊💪
I started the hobby in March 2023 after I saw my dad with 4 gold fishes in a 5 gallon tank lol. Now I have two 75g tank😂 one with African Cichlids and another with South American cichlids. Got a 40g tank because I got some Electric Blue Acara that are breeding and a 20g tank as my hospital tank and I blame Kev for this 😂😂😂😂 jk
Also, if you have a new tank, remember your test kits test for the TOTAL AMMONIA present in your tank, and doesn't give you the actual numbers of nh3 and nh4 present. It gets really scientific, but nh3, if I'm not mistaken, is the killer, and there is a conversion calculator online you can access to get the almost exact amount of nh3 present, which will fluctuate depending on your ph and temperature, again, if I remember correctly. My memories really foggy on the topic, but I know prime time aquatics is a channel that has a video on the science of ammonia readings if you wanna learn more about the subject.
Kev,
I did all this and more. You forgot one crucial thing buying to many fish at one time before the tank is ready. I did this to fast and ended up crashing my AF cichlid tank and killing them all. I was so upset. Lessons learned. I have learned a lot from you bro. Appreciate these videos and the time you put in to educate the newcomers. Even as veterans we make mistakes and sometimes it costs the fishes life. Appreciate you brother.
He literally mentioned this in number 2 mistake!
LMFAOOOOOO the beginning had me 💀,did exactly just those things😅,money was right, mood was right, sale was right🤣🛒🤷🏾♀️
I have a 10 gallon tank going to add 4 to 6 dwarf secrets only and just enjoy this
Another great video 👍🏽
Appreciate that bro 😊💪
You’re a great teacher! Appreciate you sharing your knowledge! 😊
I definitely suffer from MTS. I bought a 20 gallon for the first time. Quickly realized i need bigger. I’m on my third tank now. Love all the African cichlid info i get from you. Just found you recently. Do you have a good source to get info on keeping Oscar’s? That’s the next journey. 🤣🤣🤷🏽♂️
Hold-up! First u are making me rethink my choices from the past. Second, where is the bonus in the end of the vid😢. Jk jk. Love your vids Kev!!
You remember those old school bonuses huh! lol 🤣💪
@KaveManAquatics Yes sir! Long time viewer and learned a lot from your vids! Please promise me that you stay humble, positive and keep those comment trolls out of your awesome community (always cracks me up 🤣) ❤️
Everything he said about the ITS is true. Definitely buy the largest tank u can afford in money and space. Trust me just do it. Also I’ve done everything he’s stated.
Hi. I started my first tank when I was 8 years old. Now I'm 33 years and still enjoying having tanks. 2.5 weeks ago I started a Malawi tank for the first time.
What Malawi fish do you recommend in a 120cm tank?
What is best practise to add these fish, because I read a lot about adding all the fish at once.
What about the water condition and adding all the fish at once? Usually I add fish in smaller groups
Do you recommend a water change before/after the fish are added?
I was referred by my coworker Tyler to your channel. I started a new position in the fresh water section of a store in Michigan. As a former employee of a big box pet store, I never realized how undereducated I was. I spent three years there selling fish everyday.
Now, I'm excited because I am starting fresh with you as I begin researching the steps to get my dream set up for a future Jack Dempsey set up
Question for you, what is a recommendation for research and planning? I set a goal of four months.
Sorry I have had this bloom now for almost 2- months and most things I can't handle this one seams like it going to get better and then it comes back... clear in the morning then by late afternoon it's back ...just don't get it, could it be alge problem??? tnahk for the reply
No petco or petsmart but finatics aquarium in Toronto with a 3.5 gallon with a Betta no idea what I was doing week later so much ammonia smell
Lol 10/10
Your videos helped me get started and now on to MTS
Guilty. But I'm getting better now.
🤣💪
Always on point! Why would anyone follow any other channel 🤔
Let’s Go!!! 🐟
Appreciate you bro! 😊💪
Has a beginner's first big mistake is going to PetSmart. Like I've done in the past about 80 percent of the fish I've bought from them die within a few days. I've tried 4 Oscars and all died. So all my other fish are online orders.
My anglefish has flakey scales does anyone know wot it could be???
Ok ive had mts literally sitting with over 30tanks u got me🤣🤣😅
hey kev i got a question i have a 75 gallon overstocked african chiclid tank i have a fluval fx6 and a 100 gallon filter as well i let the tank cycle for about 2 weeks then added 2 fish and did a water test it came back 0 nitrate and 0 nitrite then i added more fish about 15 to be exact within the week and then did another test and came back extremely high off the charts nitrate and nitrite so i did a water change about 80 percent and added seachem prime and seachem stability and waited 2 days did another test it still came back high nothing changed so i did another water change and i tested again it went down very slightly but not by much and i did 2 80 percent water changes within 2 days and i add benificial bacteria and i even used seachem matrix in my filter and nothing has changed inwas hoping maybe you had some thoughts on this
Hey I got a question, if you add more stability to a tank, will the new bacteria outcompete the older bacteria?
Doesnt really work that way. The bacteria amount you need for your bio-load will remain while the extra or unneeded amount will die off.
Ok thanks! I also live on LI too and I go to Tropical Showcase in Hicksville.
Lol to think ive done none of these and ive been in the hobny for 3years i was basically class first then baught my stuff and from there ive never stopped researching on fish i didnt have plants planted tanks tricks never lost a fish yet
Yep. Multiple water changes. That’s me. 🙈
Found your channel last year and while I had made many of these mistakes with my 15 gallon, I upgraded to a 90 AFTER watching the majority of your videos. My fish are healthy and thriving. Thanks for all that you do.
Nice!!! So glad to hear that! 😊💪
just finally got my orandas in my new 55 gal took me a few months but i def made some of these mistakes
Number 10 all the way. I've been in the hobby on and off for close to 30 years and I swear it never ceases to shock me how many conflicting sources of info are out there. Kev's info has always been consistently reliable, but that's just me!
I’ve had fish all my life but never had one I take care of that was bigger than a bata tank till a year or 2 ago love this hobby
Thats the beauty of it...The possibilities are endless 😊💪
@@KaveManAquatics I wish I could afford a video call with you so I can get some pointers with my tank
You can tell us how to take care of glow in the dark fish pleade
This is perfect timing as I am investigating setting up a fish tank. I had a small one many years ago and have time and space for a starter tank! It'll be one of my winter projects 😊🐟🐠
Did all of the above, thank you for sharing our mistakes for the benefit of new comers. New comers stick with kev on this channel.. youll be fine!
Appreciate that reco bro! 😊💪
Great video as always.👏🏽💪🏽
ive noticed that a lot of people dont know how to do research lol
I definitely researched before most every step, but still there's a learning curve.
Absolutely
I have 2feet tank and i change water 10 percent weekly.... Does it good or not...
Water changes depends on bio-load, not the size of the tank. Watch this - th-cam.com/video/U_uBNKeIksQ/w-d-xo.html
In regards to the testing, I started off testing after the first couple weeks every day and did that for a month to get a feel for how the tank was cycling, and I was able to chart the process. It was actually very informative. I have since done regular testing before any large planned water changes and cleanings, and before adding any new fish/shrimp/snails, and because of that rigorous initial process, I can test quickly and efficiently and understand if something is off even if it does not appear to be.
I also recently learned the hard way that if the tank starts to look dirty, it was probably too late. I ended up killing everything in the tank, I believe from a combination of things. 1) I live in a new neighborhood, and found out after this unintended, fairly expensive and stressful purge, that they had connected new pipes and opened them up and likely had overdosed the chlorine levels the day before I performed 2 large water changes on 2 different tanks. It was likely so much that the normal Prime dose wasn't nearly enough. 2) I cleaned the sand substrate in the larger tank much more thoroughly because I had put it off and likely had stirred up some gas pockets all over the tank and while the water levels dropped, the combination of these things likely torched their gills. I also killed my kids betta fish in a separate tank (3rd one we have lost, first 2 were not my fault), which is why I am certain the water going in was over chlorinated.
Took me a few days to figure it all out, but only 2 of the fish I lost were ultimately the intended residents of the tank as the group of Buenos Aires Tetras I had were basically a hardy test fish. This was not the way I had intended to change fish, as I killed both hill-stream loaches in the process, but I am much happier with a group of green neons and pearl danios. Turns out I had 5 amana shrimp hiding in the tank since April, that I was certain were dead months ago, but once the tetras were gone and the water was cleared up, they all came out. I have since added a bunch more smaller Amanas, a group of pygmy corys and 2 new mystery snails. Everything seems to be much better balanced and everything has far more room to live with no aggression. I am likely at full stock on the tank, and if the shrimp start to be overpopulated, I will move a few into my office betta tank.
The office tank was going to be strictly for cherry shrimp as it is a HEAVILY planted nano rimless, but it sat fully cycled for a couple months with just plants until I could get the kH/gH right for shrimp, and decided I'd like at least 1 fish in it, and the betta is doing great.
Overall, your channel and Aquarium Co-op have really given me the confidence to do this, and I feel like, while I will definitely make more mistakes as I go, no longer a beginner in this hobby. So thank you.
You have the best info in my opinion!❤
Thanks Tiff! I appreciate you! 😁💪

Just getting back into the hobby and have a 20 gallon right now. Tank is ready to go with sand rocks and cycled. I really would like to add some peacocks. Am I even able to? Maybe some parrots. What can I really do?
20 gallons is not big enough for peacocks. If you wanted to keep African Cichlids theres a lot to learn, Start with this playlist loaded with tons of info on African Cichlids - th-cam.com/play/PLP5OXTIIDO8MG9hyJ8PjbC33zEbcyy8__.html

Hi can you help . My nitrates are slightly high after adding some Cichlids. Should I ad stability and prime together if so how lomg for Thanks
Yes! But a water change is the first step with high nitrates. Then watch this - th-cam.com/video/dfxs8MDlWV8/w-d-xo.html
I used to test water weekly. Now I'm basically on autopilot and haven't tested in months.
Exactly! 😁👏
When you purchase a new fish and you say to quarantine for a little bit. What exactly do you do with those new fish?

I researched like crazy before buying. But the one extra guppy just happened to come along. LOL
Hey Kev, in how much time should my nitrite start spiking? I tested my water after 2 weeks of cycling my tank and my ammonia was at .25ppm while adding Prime and Stability. Should I keep adding Prime everyday and add Stability even after the recommended 7 days? Thanks!
👏
👋🏼
Watching this because I DON'T want to make these mistakes. I had a 60g as a teenager and did Ok, not perfect. That was back in the day of under gravel filters and no internet!
Now I plan to build a 150+ to have Florida native fish that I catch myself - possibly some FL invasive species. I'm going all-in up front after watching you and a few others.
Thanks for the info.
Exactly cycled tanks is key for first timers and research of new tank to know all parameters of COMPATIBLE FISH, but with that being said Danios are extremely hardly so first time in the hobby I highly suggest these as my first time I kept these in a tank 1 week cycle and they survived 3 years
I inherited two goldfish against my will lol. I took them to keep them from being flushed. They were living in pure filth. I’ve had them for 3 months, and they’ve been ok until the last two days, when I noticed some weird behavior and found out there was high ammonia in the tank. I found your channel when researching what to do. I’m still not sure if they will make it, but thank you for the great info! I’ve made so many mistakes in the last 3 months. I wish I had found you sooner.
All ten are good. #10 I find interesting because when I got into the hobby I watched a bunch of different people on TH-cam. Now I have about five, including Kev. That said, I’ve even found my local fish store has disagreed some on fish capability vs TH-camrs. Just got to find the sources you trust the most and not overthink everything.
Damn those panic warter changes man! XD
🤣🤣🤣
Great video kave I've done all of it now I got a 15 flex a 30 gallon and a 65 gallon. The 15 flex is way more maintenance then the other 2. In my two bigger tanks water changes 1 to 2 weeks the smaller one every week. But great test results weekly
My biggest mistake that i have done was when I first got a fish tank (it was a 75g) I didn't get fish right away because they told me it needs to cycle for about a week or 2, but here's the mistake I did I went to go get 10 goldfish and I was fine and I was enjoying them but when I did the first water change I didn't add declorinator because I didn't know, the next morning they were all dead 😢
Hey kev, would you be able to do a short video to show people how to use the API GH and KH liquid test kit? I bought one specifically for my Ram cichlid tank. It's pretty easy to use
I swear the guppy followed me home 😁

I’m so guilty. I made those mistakes
