- Clear and concise guide to building your own sturdy aquarium stand for any size tank. I'll show you step-by-step everything you need to know to build a stand for your own aquarium fish, including materials and supplies and detailed instructions. Easily build your own fish tank stand after watching this video.
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

What do you think? Pretty easy to do? Let me know, and also tell me if you have any other words of wisdom for build a stand. Thanks for watching!
I think you did a great job, brother.
Awesome getting your old man involved.
You definitely can save a lot of money when homemade is done right. It is always more reliable than a PetSmart plywood contraption.
Great video
OMG your Dad says the exact same thing as mine: "Measure twice cut once" 🤣
lol - and it still makes good sense. However I’m prone to mistakes so I measure like three times and cut once 😂
That's awesome! Had my 12 year old helping me install extra beams and jack posts in the crawl space last weekend. Found a good deal on market place and have 2 75 gallon tanks with matching stands right next to each other now 👍⚓🇺🇲
Good times ahead!
WOW, you did it, good job! Nice to meet your dad, this tank is going to be a huge with the size of that stand, really cool I'm getting excited to see it and just can't wait! Thank you for making another video for us the peanut gallery when you are so busy and see you when you can make the next one.
Thanks Polly! Next I have to move some big tanks around 😬
@@CichlidCharmer Yikes I feel for you on that nasty task!
Love this video! Good info, hanging with Dad, great timing (I’m collecting info and ideas as I prepare to build a diy stand) This channel has quickly become my favorite aquarium channel. Can’t wait to see what the new tank will be stocked with!
Wow thank you! What size aquarium are you doing?
@@CichlidCharmer Going to be a 75 gal angelfish/cory tank with my current 36 gal and 20 gal tanks underneath it. Im building a practice stand for a little 10 gal tank this afternoon as a practice round! I’ve become totally obsessed with aquariums in the last year!
Very similar to the stand I built for my 125g tank. I've always enjoyed wood work.
I built my own stand also for my 210gallon tank, I used 2 supports on the outside corners and 4 legs per side with supports. Used 2x4 as my tank measured 72x24x30 as l now would have done it a little shorter so getting access from the top to inside tank is easier as I need to stand on a step stool. Nice video mate, well worth the effort indeed doing it yourself. 👍👍👍
Thank you! Yeah it definitely feels good too, to know you made it. I appreciate you taking the time to share your stand info 🥰
Love this !
Thank you!
Looks great and I look forward to seeing your new tank!
Thank you, Sir Gerbil!
Absolutely dig the final, rustic look of your Alcatraz aquarium stand. Did you upload a follow up video on the 10 ft stand?
Thanks. No. I still have to finish the stand, but it’ll be a bit. Probably won’t do a finishing video, as that might be a bit to specialized for most of my audience.
I like it! May even build a new stand so I have excuse to get another tank! Awesome video and stay happy and healthy 😊 ❤
Good to see you, chillyhappy. Thanks for coming back my faithful friend!
Great video I have built several stands from a 7 ft a 6 ft and a 4 footer. Building them is just enjoyable for me. And oh yea I have an Custom Aquarium with the seamless sump and love the heck out of it.
Oh that’s good to know! I’m really excited to see it!
@@CichlidCharmer Yes you won't be disappointed for sure big tanks cost a lot so investing in a quality builder is important. My tank is 3 years old and Zero issues.
They have been wonderful to work with so far. Good to have a quality tank like that!
“Subscribe, or someone dies” 😂😂☠️
Glad you liked that! Haha
Nice stand you did a really good job!
Thanks, Sam!
@@CichlidCharmer yep, can’t wait for the New tank you’re getting!
You’re a brave guy lol
Hey I would really like to see how you finish off your fish tank stands they are beautiful.
The finished ones were done by another person locally. This one should look like them when I’m finished with it.
Great tutorial- thanks for making it. I love how you built this with your dad. Looking forward to seeing what you put in this giant tank. Based on your channel, I suspect it will be some fancy goldfish.😅
Thanks! Yep you’re close. It’ll be those beloved neon tetras 😂
that horizontal line in the video across your eyebrows at 8:36scared the shit out of me , i thought my screen broke , thank god
lovely vid , short and sweet
Darnit I checked for that and couldn’t see one. It’s that like button thing. Glad your tv is fine though! Thanks!
At least your dad helps! My father said im an idiot lmaoo. I cant wait to see what you're going to stock! Central American? Large South American??? The suspense is killing me!!
Haha - who says he didn’t call me an idiot? He thinks I’m crazy for having such big tanks. But yeah, he was happy to help 🥰. Thanks Dennis!
@@CichlidCharmer hey when I showed my father my cichlid room, he just looked at me and shook his head. Lmao
Looking forward to seeing the new tank! What’s your stocking plan for it?
Thank you! Still a secret, but I can tell you it’s hard to find everything I want. It could take a while to get it all!
CC,
Wow that is a huge tank and stand. How many gallons it’s it going to be. I can’t wait to see the finished project of both the stand and the tank.
It’s a lot bigger than my wife was expecting 😂 still figuring out the stocking, but I do have some of it already here and some I’m about to order. But for now it’s 🤫. I think you’ll like my choices, Jeremy, but not sure
Wow that's awesome. I can't wait to see the aquarium. How tall is it going to be. Maybe I missed it on the video. Great video.
Thank you! I haven’t said how tall yet. Still a secret 🤫
Ok thanks. Can't wait.
Exciting news! My guess is 530 gallons
530… 🧐 Them’s a lot of gallons. Thanks for guessing! I should have the setup video out in a few weeks.
I thought having more contact points on the ground helps to distribute the load and reduce stress on the wooden structure.
You know I don’t think that’s so much an issue if you’re running your tank perpendicular to the joists and there is enough support but it wouldn’t hurt. However, my joists are running horizontally to the length of the tank. There are so many extra joists that the space can hold 6500 lbs. However, you got me thinking and in my situation I think it’s a very good idea to have more contact points with the floor. So because of your question, I have moved the bottom cross bracing so that it touches the floor. Thanks!
Love your videos It is Liam my Severum is doing good
Hi Liam! Glad your severum is doing well. I have a few of the Americans I wanted now, and I can see why people love those cichlids so much.
Yeah, they’re a little bit easier going then the African cichlid’s what South American cichlids did you get
I just have a few of what I’m looking for, but I’m keeping quiet until the tank gets set up 🤫
Ok sounds good are they monster fish like Oscar‘s Arawana’s pacu
Can not Wait for your tank to be set up. bye have a great rest of your day
Is there a video on how you made the exterior of the stand?
No. Bought the other two, and I won’t be making a video of the finish work on this one.
You can save a lot of money building your own I build all of mine
Soooo much less expensive! And if I don’t mess up with the finish work, it should look much better than one you would buy.
did you seal the top? Either way looks fat fish dsignz approved. Cant wait to see the finished stand w doors and then the tank set up, ill be following along.
Thompson’s, yep. I’ll mention that is the finishing stage video. Thanks, man!
To my calculations it’s about 600 gallons ? I can’t wait to see what you do with it !!!
Not quite that big. Thanks Ian!
@@CichlidCharmer ohhhh the stand is 40
Inches high. I thought the aquarium was the dimensions in the video. Still sounds pretty big. 30 inches deep and 10 foot long ! So awesome
Your aquariums are super beutiful. I have a 6 gallon tank with mollies and i am having trouble keeping them alive. But one of them had fry and non of them are dying so what could be the issue? Also my sister who is much more skilled at taking care of fish tanks. She used to have a salt water one. She has mentioned that she wanted a big tank (probably 75 gal) and have oscars. Im planning on getting it for her birthday because she would absolutly love it. What all would i need to get for supplies. I already picked out a stand and tank. But what type of filter, chemicals, and other things do you think i should get so she can properly run it?
Better check your water parameters including pH. Make sure all the conditions the fish need to thrive are being met, like type of scape, temp, tank size, etc.
That’s a great gift for your sister! Just keep in mind that a 75 is only large enough for one Oscar, and I would personally say that’s too small also. However, here’s what she’ll need:
Gravel and decor.
Good filter (the biggest Tidal hang on back) or a canister filter. The size filter really depends on the amount of waste produced by the fish
Light of some kind
Lids
Gravel or sand
Heater (I use Eheims. You’d need two 150 watts)
Heater controller (Inkbird 306a)
Seachem stability for bacteria
Seachem Prime for dechlorinator
I’d probably let her pick out decor and fish and probably the light too.
She’ll be thrilled - you’re a good sis!
Oh and there are links to some of those things in my video descriptions
Thank you so much for replying! Her birthday is in December so I'm still saving and planning. So I think I will try and find a 100 gal, if you think 75 is too small. Thank you for the list. And I was planning on letting her choose decor and fish. I just want to get her the basics so she can begin her fish adventure. I'm down to 3 fish on my 6 gal. So I'm going to let it filter and cycle for a long time and maintain my tank before getting any more fish. I do have a snail and a plecostomus that seem to be doing fine. Thank you so much for this information. I'm still educating myself before purchasing anything. 😀
Also now that I'm looking I'm having trouble finding a 100 gallon tank with a nice stand. And if I do it is $1500 I'm looking for one at least under $1000 but would be better if under $700. For just the tank and stand. Other things I'll find. I'm just trying to find the right stuff so everything turned out well.
Also... lol.. I know I'm asking a lot of questions but, I'm trying to learn and figure it out. Just for my personal research for her. What other fish would go well with 1 Oscar if I get the 75 gallon?
Bro, what type of camera do you have?
I use the Canon R6 Mark II for some things and my iPhone for others.
We need an update brother!!! Wheres the tank!!! Lol
Dennis! Good to see you man! I had some personal things come up that set me behind. I also had to wait for some parts I needed for the sump. The next video I make should have a completed tank but still just the frame for the stand. Maybe two weeks??
@@CichlidCharmer all good brother. Take care of the priorities! Same here on personal things. I just purchased a mesoheros festae aka the red terror. She's 4 inches and currently in my 40 gallon breeder. I have make room for another tank to permanently place her in.
Red Terror - nice! Those are beautiful. Absolutely.
@@CichlidCharmer take of the priorities and we'll be here waiting brother!
I appreciate that, man. I’m not gonna stress about rushing it. Gonna make this tank perfecto
One thing I’ve noticed on your tanks. Heavy ! Should you really have all those large tanks on your first level of home ? I’ve been told anything over 75 gallons needs to be in a basement or you can warp your floorboards
Where else should you put them? His tanks sit on load bearing walls and sit perpendicular to the joints so the weight is spread out. His floors have no issues. Depending where this one is going, he may have to reinforce the floor. I've had to do it to my floors in the crawl space because I don't have a basement and I have 10 tanks! A lot of old old homes were built with 2*8 floor joist that can't take the weight where as most newer homes are built with 2*10's or thicker.
Thanks - and kind of. So Alcatraz actually runs horizontal with the joists, but here’s the thing when we had the house built they engineered that part of the floor with extra joists so it can support up to 6500 lbs. the 180 sits right on top of another thick beam that can support anything. However, beyond those two places, I’ll have to add extra support myself. Thanks for asking, StumpDaddy and for your help, Dennis. I appreciate you both!
