For sure, all of us know the third symphony of Brahms. But the accurate work of Chelibidache on this famous score lets us hear about tones and details that we did not notice inother interpretations or in the memory that we have of the work. This is true especially for the extreme movements, but it applies indeed to the whols symphony. At the same times, the global architecture of the whole is perfectly clear. This is indeed a great rendering of this rich score. I just see that there is a rendering by Furtwaengler on line. I am eager to make the comparison. Probably two very great but very different interpretations.
I fully agree, Brahms has ever been underestimated, i think he' s comparable to Beethoven, just one question arises: why only Germans can create such a deep, timeless music ? Human mankind might live good, or even better, without jazz-pop-rock yet might not without Brahms, Beethoven, Bach, Wagner.
Most probably..., if you haven't heard the astonishing version by Fürtwangler. Noise (monoaural) by the audience (it seems everybody suffered by a serious flu), but the music the Berliner Philarmoniker delivered under the immense knowledge and inspiration impossed by the maestro was just jawdropping.
