SAMETOP sent me their Floating Hand Grip and I wanted to see how it stacks up against GoPro's The Handler floating hand grip. In this video, I unbox the SAMETOP then use it in the waves of one of the World's largest bodies of fresh water, Lake Michigan. I let you see for yourself how these two floating hand grips keep my GoPro HERO5 Black and GoPro HERO7 Black action cameras afloat in the choppy waves. No fancy edits, no quick cuts...I just let you watch and compare the two so you can make your own best judgement.
I found the SAMETOP Floating Hand Grip performed remarkably well and it has the added advantage of a water-tight storage compartment built-in to the handle itself. This would be convenient for keeping a few dollars safe and/or a boating license, etc. At roughly half the price of GoPro's The Handler, the SAMETOP Floating Hand Grip offers good value in my opinion.

@@chrisworkandmachinesOh, I'm well aware of the problem being heart and lungs made for a 160lbs man installed in a 250lbs man...tends to make the pair work overtime simply sloshing through the gentle waves and sandy lake bottom 🤣. Unfortunately, doctors have more immediate issues to deal with on me at the moment but I do appreciate your concern and hopefully will be around long enough to get the weight down 🙏. Classic Murphy's Law this video gets so many views when I recorded such an ugly "bad water quality day" compared to so many other times the water is crystal clear 😆You'll have to take my word for it that Lake Michigan at least along the Western Michigan shoreline is usually beautiful clean fresh water...just not this day or place. Surprisingly the blue is more bright and visible
I do think it has a way of standing out in these conditions. I think in more "clear" or "bluer" water conditions the orange may have a slight advantage and the GoPro one seems to stick up just a bit higher in the water, too. The SAMETOP definitely does the job, though 👍
Not exactly the same thing, but There was research done on color of pfd underwater for rescue purposes…color and turbidity of water had a lot to do with visibility…
@@johnrobertson7583 You make a very valid point and I love your vocabulary using "turbidity"...great, proper terminology 👍In my hometown back in the 1970s, the fire department changed firetruck paint color from classic "fire engine red" to a "florescent green" because study had shown at night the color red was actually harder to see. As a child, I remember explaining my coloring actions to teachers suspecting I had learning challenges or was color blind after grading my renderings of firetrucks in book report drawings and participating in civic group wall painting projects as I portrayed my firetrucks in green rather than traditional red. 🤣The conditions and environment in which a color will be seen is critical! Is that orange one the one that comes with the GoPro package/kit?
The orange handled one is the official GoPro Handler floating handle. GoPro offers many different combination kits so I'm not certain to which package/kit you're referring. If it's an official GoPro package/kit offering a floating handle then I'd presume it's this official GoPro "Handler" floating handle. Thanks for watching.

Did you take it without underwater cover? Or is the underwater cover on the gopro?
All three of the GoPros are water-tight down to 10-meters as-is without the external deep-dive external case (HERO5, HERO7 and HERO10) and that's what you're seeing in this video. The optional GoPro external dive case/enclosure increases the depth to 60-meters. Thanks for watching!

I've lost my gopro with the gopro floating handle in a shipwreck at -30 meters deep. Incredibly must be negative at this deep, the gopro luckily sink down like a rock

With GoPro rated to 10 meters without protective underwater case I wonder if its seals allowed water to infiltrate internal audio and minute compartments making it heavy enough to counter balance the buoyancy of the handle? You have lovely underwater shorts so I’m sure you know better than anyone with your experience…again sorry you lost your GoPro to the depths.
@@WorksIRL Typically when we go down to a shipwreck we put on the protective housing. So water does not get in anywhere. I usually keep it clipped on to my BC or to my wrist.

I think that's a great idea! Check your user manual but if I remember correctly your Osmo Action4 is water-proof as-is down to 18 meters and 60 meters if you use the protective case. Even though it's already water-proof up to diving down 18 meters under water, I think having that protective case is a good idea in salty ocean water to save having that salt water residue on rubber door gaskets, etc. At minimum, I'm sure your user manual will suggest rinsing it with clean, fresh water after every underwater use. Even used in fresh water I think rinsing with fresh, clean water is prudent as you see in my video even "fresh water" can be a bit "dirty", too. Thanks for watching and sharing your nice feedback! 👍

No, the GoPro using the media mod with its external microphone is not waterproof. It might withstand a light rain but I'd not want it to get doused with water. Thanks for watching and sharing your question. 👍

I recommend you download the GoPro HERO12 manual from GoPro's website and/or watch some of their "how-to" and "instructional" videos on their website and GoPro's various TH-cam channels so you can learn the proper way to use your GoPro HERO12. Using my GoPro HERO10 in water, I need to remove the media mod and make sure all the GoPro HERO10 compartment doors and covers are properly closed and sealed to ensure no water intrusion into the GoPro HERO10 camera. Good luck and be sure to follow GoPro's instructions before submerging your GoPro HERO12 into any amount of water.
What case do you have on your gopros id like to get one.
GoPro HERO5, HERO6 and HERO7 used to come with an exterior plastic cage which had the typical GoPro screw mount hole tabs on the bottom. The GoPro HERO cameras themselves didn't have any built-in mount so they fit inside the plastic cage which had the mounting tabs. Starting with HERO8, GoPro started the design concept of integrating the mounting tabs into the bottom of the camera itself. If you have a HERO5, 6, or 7 then you should be able to get these plastic cages still or at least from 3rd-party vendors as they made many different styles. You wouldn't need the cages if you've got HERO8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 since they have the mounting tabs built-in on the bottom. I hope I answered your question. Thanks for watching!

Congratulations on getting such a cool xmas gift! Yes, GoPro HERO10 as-is is stated to be waterproof to 33-feet under water (check that figure first...just going by memory).

is gopro hero 11 safe to drop in ocean salt water without any dive case on?
Yes, my understanding is all the GoPro HERO5, HERO6, HERO7, HERO8, HERO9, HERO10, HERO11 and HERO12 are water proof down to 33 feet (11 meters) underwater without an external dive case. The optional external dive case increases the effective water-proofing depth beyond the 33 feet to some much deeper limit. Rinsing the camera exterior after being submerged in salt water or any water is prudent to clean out salts or particles from drying inside any crevices or microphone/speaker openings.
Is safe but if you open it up on the beach to change batteries sand and salt may come inside the battery door. It happened to me and now im debating getting a cluncky protective case or swapping the door and getting a floaty or silicone case that would be much easier to carry on a strap

Honestly, our "normal" Lake Michigan spots are crystal clear waters but of course, we chose a closer-to-home location when I shot this video and what horrible water conditions! Classic irony, I normally put a ton of effort into a video and get 12 views so figured it's not likely worth reshooting to save upsetting the few folks watching my video...go figure this shorts and long-form video get 173k views! 😆. I don't think the Michigan's travel/tourism board would be too likely to use my video in their "Pure Michigan" marketing campaign..."Come swim in our brownish-green cesspool we call Lake Michigan!" 🤣. I wish I could but I suspect shipping costs would likely cost as much as the camera itself. Do you own any camera now and if so, what is it? Do you have a smartphone with a built-in camera? Is that a waterproof case...if so, which one?
Neither of my GoPro cameras (HERO5 and HERO7) is in any waterproof case. Just their mounting cages. They’re both naturally waterproof to a depth of 11 meters (if my memory serves me).

GoPro definitely seemed to have rested on their laurels of inventing the "action camera" and is now in "catch-up" mode to its many competitors who have been so innovative in their own right.
