I just went to Kazakhstan for 3 weeks, including Almaty and Uralsk. It immediately became one of my top 3 countries that I've ever been to, maybe the top! I would love to live there for an extended period eventually. That being said, I think some people's reaction to this film is over the top. I have a few Kazakh friends that hate Borat with a passion, talking about how racist it is and how it misrepresents the country. The thing is that the movie isn't really making fun of Kazakhstan at all, because it's so far from the reality that it can hardly even be described as a caricature. The movie is making fun of American people who would actually BELIEVE that someone from Kazakhstan would behave that way, and not bat an eye in disbelief. I also have Kazakh friends that agree with me, and yet others who don't really care either way. I agree with the lady at the end of this video, that the movie might actually spark people's interest in what Kazakhstan is really like, and might even put them on the path to falling in love with the country the way I did.

for what it's worth: i google Almaty/Nur-Sultan and honestly wanna visit that city as a starter, and the city of Turkistan for the historical beauty. if there's other recommendations, I'd be up for it. I often start with places like Almaty, or Osaka in Japan, or Dublin in Ireland as places that would honestly be the kind of place I would want to move to (in my country for example, Seattle would be one i'd recommend if you prefer a milder climate); then branch out from there to learn more as i go along. Borat is pretty funny, but even a small bit of media literacy can show that the joke is on American ignorance. so if watching it doesn't spark a little curiosity about the world, like Kazakhstan for example, that's their loss. But, I wouldn't wanna annoy Kazakh people with bringing it up all the time even in good fun, that would take away from the enrichment of being a visitor.

The funny thing is... Borat is so unreal and ridiculous, that it made me curious about what Kazakhstan is really like. Prior to Borat, I knew nothing about Kazakhstan, and now after feeding my curiosity a bit, I really want to travel there and see it for myself. Anybody with a brain understands that Sacha's character Borat isn't really making fun of Kazakhstan, its moreso making fun of how people in the west view cultures in the east that they're unfamiliar with. If you survey'd some of the dumbest and most ignorant individuals in North America, and asked them what they think people in Kazakhstan are like, they might come up with something ridiculous and unreal, such as Borat. The fact that almost all of the movies film times takes place in America and focuses on American culture & American's reaction, highlights that these movies are more about showcasing American ignorance than they are anything to do with Kazakhstan. The fact that the American's in the movie actually believe this person to be real, is what really sets it off for me.

this kid in his 20s used to play tennis around our usta team and try to get in and hit whenever possible. this is when it was only a skit on ALi G about 15 years ago. so one day he says he's from Kazakhstan and i said "no way, you know Borat?" Nobody, American or not, interprets the movie as an actual representation. People see it for what it is. A satirical comedy. That's not too say that everyone thinks it's funny but everyone certainly realizes it's fiction.

@@te0nzin yes I understand that the avg' individual knew nothing about Kazakhstan prior to the movie, many people didn't even know Kazakhstan existed, but I still doubt very much that large #s of people would have believed it possible that places/traditions/cultures still exist out there in-which brothers marry sisters, pimp their mothers, and violate the town goat. Obviously I'm being a little crude in my exaggeration but I think that's more or less what you're suggesting.

The joke is on British people and other people like Americans who don't even know where Kazakhstan is and what KasakiStani's look like. The fact that the people in the supposed Kazakhstani village were actually Gypsies from Eastern Europe is part of the joke. This is not hatred directed towards Kasakazani's this is taking the Mickey of British and Americans people's lack of geography knowledge And general stereotyping.

this kid in his 20s used to play tennis around our usta team and try to get in and hit whenever possible. this is when it was only a skit on ALi G about 15 years ago. so one day he says he's from Kazakhstan and i said "no way, you know Borat?" He goes "you know Borat? I am going to kill this man". He sounded dead serous LOL . Super offended. But not a super heavy accent. Sounded like someone with a slight russian accent.
