I don't know for sure, but my bet is that the origin of the Yiddish "gevalt" is indeed like you said from the German word for violence, it's just that words sometimes change their meaning when transitioning from one language to another. The similiarity of the two words is too great to be a coincidence imo. My point wasn't to say that you are wrong, it was to say that in Yiddish gevalt is not associated with violence, just with a very undesireable thing taking place.
@@AntiM1001 Words that sound similar but have a completely different meaning are called false friends. For example, the word "Huren" has completely different meanings in Dutch and German.
