  • Today's video discusses the all important topic of police corruption and how to avoid being scammed by the corrupt police in Chiang Mai. I get asked all the time by people who to avoid being ticket by Thai police. Hopefully this comprehensive guide is enough to help you avoid being ticketed.

    There is another easy way! Before you come to Thailand, get an International Drivers Permit. Cost's £5 in the UK and I would imagine similar amounts elsewhere. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE M/C BOX STAMPED. I'm lucky in that I also have a bus and lorry licence, so every category in the IDP has a stamp which impresses the hell out of the police. One of the police told me lots of people get an IDP, but don't have a stamp in the motorcycle box. They get fined. I've been pulled over countless times now. In fact, I don't even wait to be flagged down, I just drive into the checkpoint with a smile on my face. Never been fined once, and never shown my UK licence either. IDP with a motorbike authorisation is the ticket to no fines.

      +Ian Wheldale I agree and disagree with what youre saying. In my own case I didn't have any motorcycle experience until I took classes at the Honda Safety Riding Park, which I will be reviewing quite soon. Motorcycle classes here are a fraction of the cost of what they are in the states and in my experience class sizes are smaller. If my options are to get a basic motorcycle license education and permit back home or come here and take a couple weeks worth of lessons and drive without a permit I'd much rather have the instructional time and take my chances driving illegally but to each their own.

    • @IanWheldale
      @IanWheldale 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't have to take any test, written or practical to get the IDP. Just went to the post office with my UK licence and £5, and had the IDP within 5 minutes. Good point about the classes here, well worth checking out. I actually worked as a professional driver in London for 24 years before coming to live here in CM, cars and buses but no bikes. Hadn't driven a bike for 40 years before coming here. However, the extra training (like Smith's advanced driving) and all that experience make adapting to driving here easier than for most. Most important thing to check out is the Thai philosophy of driving (areas of responsibility) before going on the roads. If you expect western style, you will end up in an asylum within a few weeks.

    I’m 100% Thai. I was born and raised in Thailand and i can tell that there’s so many corruption here. For example there’s a corruption case that The guy ran over an old policeman and that policeman died but the guy didn’t get any punishment. Because that guy is Chaleo’s son. Mr.Chaleo Yoovidhya was the originator of Krating Daeng and co-creator of the “Red Bull” brand of energy drinks and their family so freaking rich. In Thailand if you’re really rich you can do whatever you want even killing someone.

    I didn't need my international drivers license for months...untill I was driving around Chang Mai. Unfortunately I forgot to bring it with me from the hostel. I said to the policie officer that I can show it later at the policestation, but still...cost me 500 baht...not sure what they ask you if you don't have one at all.

    Section 42-2
    In case there’s a treaty between the Thai government and a foreign government regarding mutual acceptance of driver’s license, an alien who doesn’t have an immigrant visa may drive a motor vehicle with a driver’s license issued by such a foreign government, or an automobile association authorized by such a foreign government. Most countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA have this agreement with Thailand under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
    An International Driver's License/Permit (IDL/IDP) is also valid in Thailand, and available from a government department or authorized auto club at a small expense. A foreign driving licence valid under the 1949 or 1968 Conventions qualifies the licence holder to apply for the IDL/IDP, and its holders may find that it is more often recognised and accepted by police and civil service officials. Beware of the many IDP/IDL websites that are not legitimate.

      Wrong! An international driving license is accepted as long as it is valid, but a foreign license is not accepted in Thailand.

    Good post. You implied that "Farang" is Thai for "Foreign". "Farang" is the Thai pronunciation of "Franc" - which is how the 17th-century French visitors to Thailand introduced themselves to the Thai royal household. 17th-century French people considered themselves "Francs" (one of the main ethnic groups in ancient France). The French 17th-century official party which visited Thailand were one of the first MAJOR official caucasian foreign parties to visit the Thai royal household, and, so, this was a big deal to the Thais at that time.

    Like many countries, Thailand requires a legal International Driving Permit. If you have both; car & motorcycle endorsements in your home country, make sure you get both endorsements on your IDP. Most countries also limit how many days, weeks, months that you can drive with an IDP, based on your visa entry date. If staying longer, verify how long it is legal to stay. Within 2 weeks of my arrival in Thailand last year, I got both, Thai car & motorcycle driver's licenses. I keep them in my pocket when driving. If stopped, I immediately show it, and get waved to go. It is also illegally to drive in Thailand without a shirt on. Regardless, of if driving a car or motorbike. Where a shirt and helmet.

    I don't understand how this is a scam... If you don't have driving license 400 is normal fee you go to pay at police station, or if there is chief on the scene who write receipt for the ticket. It's not corruption. Then it's corruption if you try to bribe officer to let you go and give some pocket money. I took rather 1000 baht ticket than paid 500b which traffic cop was asking from me, he was asking me several time to to pay on the scene (no need to go police station) I said every time give me 1000b ticket and I go to station, police was little bit upset but wrote the ticket.

    If you do the right thing, show the international driver's license to the police, you wouldnt do any trick to avoid the police. All of these officers didnt corrupt or scam people , they just do their job. All the ticket that police give to you is the legal document you can keep and ask or show to the court or any government office about the traffic law. Please do not blame other people if you do not understand well how they work. If you live in Thailand , please do the right thing according to the Thai's law. If you dont understand some of thai people manner, you can ask any thai people. This video clip can lead other people misunderstanding about the thai police work................From one of who have good intentions for you.

    • @MitchellMillennial
      @MitchellMillennial  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not everyone coming to Thailand is going to have an international license and I NEVER said that the police in Thailand were bad people or that they had bad intentions. The truth is that they do not get compensated enough and they have found ways of making extra money off of foreigners that have comparatively more money. They are corrupt and they do scam people, that's why they will ask for 1000B with no written ticket when the penalty for breaking the law is 400B and a written ticket.

    Here's something you missed! You wouldn't be ticketed if you ride legally. Know the laws BEFORE you suggest ways to ignore them. A US driver's license is NOT accepted or valid in Thailand. An international driving license is accepted as long as it is valid. There is a difference!

    • @MitchellMillennial
      @MitchellMillennial  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but in most countries your car drivers permit doesn't allow you to ride a bike. You need to ride a bike in your county for it to be valid,

    • @MrEye4get
      @MrEye4get 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MitchellMillennial I was speaking of a motorcycle license as well. A foreign country license (including CALIFORNIA) isn't ACCEPTED in Thailand. Only a valid International Driver's Permit is acceptable. They only cost about $10-$15 so get one before traveling.

    • @MitchellMillennial
      @MitchellMillennial  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MitchellMillennial
      @MitchellMillennial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I understand you're moron. You think all people coming to ride a motorcycle in Asia ride a bike in their home country? An IDP is irrelevant because your IDP for a car isn't valid on a bike meaning you're still driving without a license even if you have an idp for a car. Thus because of this you still should try and avoid police
