I'm in Orlando, and I LOVE bougainvilleas. There are so many overgrown monsters around me. I bought a decent saw, now have collected and currently growing 5 different kinds. They are colorful, fast-growing, and my favorite part is they're versatile. It can be a climbing vine or a bonsai!

Thank you! My first bonsai was a bougie (pink pixie)...and it's still alive after 15 years (14 years without re-potting!). I really didn't get into bonsai until recently, so the bougie and a dwarf shefflera (also about 15 years old) were the only two I had until earlier this year when the pandemic had me shifting hobbies/interests around (no surprise - I read that there's been an increase in the number of houseplants people have bought since the pandemic). I live in zone 7b and I noticed that the roots of bougies are super sensitive. I managed to propagate (90% success rate) 4 bougies from cuttings and are happily thriving indoors (brought them in a few weeks ago when weather started getting cooler). The mother plant, however, did not like the sudden change indoors since I also re-potted it right before bringing it inside. It lost nearly 95% of its leaves, but new shoots/buds have come out after putting it under grow lights and not watering it as much. The mother plant's trunk is small (1/2 inch) and I don't expect it to fatten up since it's in a slightly bigger pot than the one it was in for 14 years, but with the 4 smaller ones, I might plant one or two in a larger container with regular soil and let it grow wild and fatten up over the next few years.
Hey Rich, great job keeping them alive for such a long time. Tropicals are best repotted in the middle of the summer. I would also recommend that when you repot your trees, use a good bonsai soil mix.

Cool video. Everybody loves bogies. I have the 'normal' one in pink and red and also some pink pixie dwarfs. For cuttings I use the regular black potting soil with lot of perlite and it doesn't give me headaches at all like Jerome says it would in the video. So using bonsai soil is not a must, dont worry. I let it sit in rainwater for 24 hours and then just stick the branch in the soil without rooting hormone. 2 -3 weeks later the new leafs apear. Super easy
Hey Robin, I didn't say it is must I said I prefer to use good bonsai soil right from the start. Black soil also works but the risk of root rot is tremendously higher. Grow a cutting in dirt and a cutting in bonsai soil and see which develops better roots, grows much faster and is over all healthier and happier.
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply I agree, and never use dirt in the first place. I live in an extremely dry climate so we tend to use a bit more organic material in our mix, but still I use lava rock and perlite as well for example. I have been using Fox Farms Ocean Forest for propigation with great success. Then switching to bonsai soil after I have a good root base.

Hey Zachary, I did this in July. If you are in a tropical climate you can do this anytime of the year.

Hi Neil, yes you can also use honey as a rooting hormone.
could you talk about other ways of doing cuttings to root? like Fukien tea or Ficus Retusa or micorcarpa. and maybe the best way to get ariel roots.? left a like
Fukien also easy to root cuttings, just follow normal cuttins procedure, but Ficus is the easiest of all, thats almost a joke. I live in a tropical climate in the caribbean, the aerial roots of my ficus plants are driving me crazy. Stick any branch in soil and it will grow roots.
@@abstract200 Unfortunately my future and tea through 6 shoots I cut them off this phone stuck them in potting soil with Thomas and sphagnum Moss and all of them died within the first 2 weeks

@@alixdgaming6667 it most likely won’t unless you are in a tropical climate.
Sand would be a better rooting medium to hold in the stump without wiring and cheaper too. Not beach sand but torpedo sand. Just a thought.
Hey T, cheaper isn't always better. Nothing compares to starting a tree in good bonsai soil.

@@abstract200 Robin is right, you don’t have to use growing hormone nor bonsai soil. The only downside of not using growing hormone is that you most likely won’t get a nice even root spread. Whenever I grow anything with the intend of it becoming a bonsai one day I use bonsai soil from the start.
And i have a regular one thats 50+ years old in my yard its about 13ft tall

Hey Oscar, Lots of heat, good soil, and blooming fertilizer are the number 1 ingredients for better growth as well as flowers.
Please advise, can I use leaf shin spray on my bonsais and other house plants??? Are they good or harmful???
@@gogreen6800 hi, it’s safe to use leaf shine but I don’t think it is necessary and it won’t add anything to the health of the tree/plant

Is that one of the thornless varieties? I don't keep Bougs in the yard because pruning them leaves me a bloody mess. 😂
Hey Michael, This one has thorns but very small ones. I feel your pain, some of them have very large and painful thorns.
Bit exaggerated, I prune mine easily. Its about using the right tools and using common sense. No problem whatsoever with the thorns here
@@abstract200 Good for you. If you buy a property that has three severely overgrown plants that are just a tangle of branches, I suppose you could spend a week carefully cutting them back. Or get cut to ribbons cutting them back to the trunk and just pull the damn things out rather than deal with them ever again and plant something you like better anyway.
@@michaelmccarthy4077 Actually, I have two severely overgrown bogies on my property. I use a long branch cutter to cut and remove the branches step by step. I also have smaller specimen, but the thorns are just as sharp! Stil I have no problem wiring them and working with them.
