  • I ride the London Underground (Tube) from Sloane Square to Hammersmith as a native New Yorker. Initially I got confused with the branch of the Circle Line that served this station thinking it was going west to Hammersmith, but I found out I could just hop on a District Line train instead!

just a little explanation as to the button on the door. at all stations on all underground lines, the doors will open automatically. however, the s-stock trains used on the subsurface lines are air conditioned. to keep the cold air in, if the train is waiting at a station for a long period of time (like a train waiting at a terminus station for it’s departure time), the doors will close after 45 seconds. you can see this happening at 14:35, when the train waits at earl’s court, likely due to congestion or other reasons. if the doors are closed but the button is still illuminated, that means the doors are still unlocked and you can press the button to open the doors. anyways thanks for the vid AK!

Excellent video review of using the Tube, ActionKid. Very informative and also very fair. We are Americans who visit London fairly often. Once you get used to it the Tube is really very easy to use. Safe travels.

That big green pipe above the Sloane Square platforms is the enclosed River Westbourne, AK.
That’s a nice section of the District Line though. South Kensington is where the major museums are and also the Albert Hall and a short walk from Harrods.
Gloucester Road at street level is just lovely.

Interesting video, about standing room, I notice you board on the middle and most crowded section of the train, when the front and end sections are often quieter and generally have spare seats, locals and commuters tend to know this but unfamiliar visitors tend to group together and stand when they don’t need to.

"See it. Say it. Sorted." is a slogan of the British Transport Police, so applies to all rail services nationwide, not just TfL services. The 'sorted' part just means sorted out, rectified, or dealt with.

TfL provides 24 hour bus services every day all over the entirety of London’s 606 square miles. It’s very comprehensive and there is a flat fare. The 24 hour bus routes are longer so you’re not changing buses so often to get to your destination. You only pay once for your bus and/or tram journey within one hour of tapping in on your first bus or tram. We would not require 24 hours Tube coverage over the whole network every day. As you say it’s limited to the lines in central London’s entertainment/tourist areas on the weekends as that is usually when most people are out partying. Also having the lines closed for a few hours overnight allows for track, signalling and rolling stock cleaning and maintenance. The same is true for the National Rail services across the UK and the Docklands Light Railway in London’s Docklands and the Trams in south London (where there is little to no Tube coverage) and the London Overground railways. We have less of a blanket coverage of 24 hour openings as we have fewer people needing to work 2-3 jobs (although that is getting more common under the present economic conditions).

Hi there. Another enjoyable video. Thanks. Just to say that “see it. Say it. Sorted” is the British Transport Police’s slogan so it’s on all forms of public transport all over the UK, not just TfL services in London. Sorted in this context means it’s been taken care of. You saw it, you told the BTP about it. It’s been taken care of. 😊

The Circle was made a spiral to make it easier to regulate the service, rather than trains having to keep moving they can now terminate and leave when needed. It's quite normal to have a wait when leaving Earls Court because the line splits three ways going west.

The doors on all underground lines open automatically, if the driver closes them because it's waiting idylling at a station for some reason then press button to open door again. The only networks where you have to use the door button to open the doors are the DLR and Overground.

The reason the exit from a public platform is labelled”way out” and not “exit” is that there are two laws that have to be adhered to.
    1) in the UK exit signs have to be green.
    2) if a sign can be seen by the driver of a train, only the track side signals can be green, this is to ensure the train driver is not misled.
    3) the text “way out” can be any colour so it is used and coloured yellow so that passengers can find a route to exit the station from the platform, and a sign not capable of being seen from a train can be coloured green and use the text “exit”.

At 5.34, you complain about confusion on the train on the circle line. I would advise that the electronic board on the right shows the time the next train arrives and where it is going so as a tourist, that should make it easy, unless you are unable to read? I would also like to add, there is an excellent tube app you can download to a phone that shows every station and line, live information on trains running times and stations, you can even plan your trip on the app and it will show you what line and station you need to take including any changes. So if you have plans, there is no reason to get lost or confused as a tourist.

Great vid, I don't know how you don't get nervous with people staring when you're talking!
    A few things:
    - The doors automatically open at all stations. The buttons are only for when they close automatically to maintain temperature on the train
    - 'See it, Say it, Sorted' isn't TfL's slogan, but the British Transport Police - the rail network uses it too
    - South Kensington is really busy because of the Museums
    - We do have some express trains, but only the Metropolitan Line during peak times (and skips Jubilee line stations all day). The Piccadilly also runs 'express' skipping District line stations from Hammersmith to Acton Town

The buttons on the doors are just for show and you don't ever need to press it yourself as the driver will always automatically open all the doors, regardless of how busy the station is. It is only tourists who think that they need to press it. This is the same on all the different lines and it is only on the long distance main line trains that you need to press the button to open the doors at a station.

The doors on these trains close after 45 seconds to keep the aircon working properly. The button remained lit, so passengers could have still pressed it if they wanted to get on. So to say you don’t ever need to press the button ain’t so. 🙂
