    I feel so fortunate to have had 10 minutes chatting with Sir Stirling at a corporate event in 1989. As a child in the 50's he was my hero watching him on a b/w tv with Raymond Baxter comentating at races all over the UK. Fangio in his opinion was the best driver ever, closely followed by Jim Clark. A true ambassador for Motor Sport. RIP Stirling.

    I did 3 Mille Miglia events back in the late 90's as support for clients driving an OSCA MT4 I'd prepared and I have to give credit to the Italian Police who always cleared the traffic in time and waved me through the towns and villages while at high speed in my truck, as soon as they saw the huge red support vehicle sticker on the front of my vehicle and heard the blast from my horns they went into action clearing the way! of course the crowds went mad at the sight of this mad horn blaring 7 1/2 tonne truck doing 70+ mph through small village high streets and with free Miglia merchandise being hurled out of the windows as we flew through but due to the incredible efficiency of those cops it always went very very well, happy days indeed

    Boy, Stirling can drive like hell whilst at the same time navigating far better than Ian Wooldridge the so-called navigator.

    Thanks for posting this. I was the editor but I've lost my copy. The producer was Mike Begg, a pal of Ian Wooldridge. Quite a character and enthusiastic imbiber. I never met Stilrling Moss, but we had some good times on this programme, and many others they made together.

    I’ve watched this vid quite a few times over the last 5 or so views as it came up on my feed. Brilliant & v funny, but makes me realise how crap camera quality was back then! Cheers.

    I still have this on VHS but it ran out of tape with ten minutes to go...at last I know how it finished! Excellent film of one of the greatest racers of all time enjoying himself in one of the most iconic of all of his racing cars, the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SLR...rest in peace Sir Stirling Moss.

      I couldn't find it on TH-cam and I knew I still had it on tape. It's a shame I recorded it LP to fill a tape up and glad you have now seen the ending 😊

    I went to Brescia in 2001. And when the cars started the same exact submarine conditions prevailed. I remember dashing between doorframes on alleys just a bit wider as the racecars trying to avoid their fast noses. Another beautiful thing to see were the roses given to the soaked navigators by spectators at slow corners. The sights, sounds and scents were, obviously, unforgettable. Thankyou 🌻:)

    I wonder if anybody has a copy of Ian Wooldridge's documentary on the Confederate Air Force from 1980?

    Wonderful to see Stirling Moss in action...but REALLY enjoyed the narration, mere mortals could only dream to have a vocabulary and the ability to use it, like the late Ian Wooldridge !

    Racing cars of that vintage _really_ don't like to go slow. Tall gears, wild camshafts, and finicky carburetors, you know. Thing sounded like a bucket full of bolts most of the time, but when we saw Stirling get it into its stride everything came good. Very cool.

    The term "navigator" here is being used in the loosest possible sense of the word. Stirling, despite occasional profane expulsions, clearly has the patience of a Saint!

    The date- I would be guessing, around 1970- & Im getting a part at Monterey Honda, & in rides Sir Stirling upon a Honda astride a red/ white Honda 90 Passport, loafers, jeans, T-shirt & a leather leashed timing watch about his neck. Coming in for a simple part, from Laguna Seca 4 miles away. No helmet, no gloves, determinedly relaxed.

  • @jcgabriel1569
    @jcgabriel1569 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bloody hell, what Sir Stirling just did is just gun the car throughout the course, then stop near the timing line and wait until the time *they're supposed to be there!*

    I'd hate to be a bumbling navigator for one of the great drivers. He should never have been filming in the first place, and he should have been completely prepared. What a plum.

    Thank you for this video of one of my childhood heroes, although I prefer his more elegant Jaguar D Type ride. Mercedes will never match that Jag for combined refinement as well as power.

    • @AmericasChoice
      @AmericasChoice 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The D-type wasn't really refined, and couldn't hold a candle to the C Type. The D-type was designed for only one thing, the straight at Mulsanne...
