The guy who played Knightley in the new Emma movie (Johnny Flynn) is the same age as Knightley, 37 years - I love that people think he is too young, but he is actually the exact same age

I was just about to comment this! Johnny Flynn is also 13 years older than Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma). Everything matches. In addition, I think he is the most likeable Mr Knightley of them all. Loved the new Emma.

@@KatsLifestyle yeah something that I hate from other adaptations (except 1996) that Knightley is really dislikeable. I mean Emma 2020 is "dislikable" but at least it was supposed to be like that, but Knightley being so dislikable is just a NO for me, also Emma has a lot of chemistry with him in this adaptation.

emma 2020 is so far my fave because i feel like they captured the humor of the book! the only thing i didnt like was emma being mean so upfront compared to the gwenyth's emma. and i also like how effeminate mr knightley is. btw!! the actor who played mr knightley is actually 37 which is the age of mr knighley in the book

The new 2020 Emma is my absolute favorite Jane Austen adaption of all! This Knightley is my fave too. He’s exactly the age as well I thought? He’s 37. I think the comedic timing was so on point and clever. Felt like Austen wrote the screenplay herself

1995 “Persuasion” in which Ciarnan Hinds WAS Wentworth and Emma Root WAS Anne!
1980 miniseries “Pride & Prejudice” in which Elizabeth Garvie IS and will always BE my Elizabeth Bennett!
In fact, it is really too bad that a biography of Jane Austen was not done then, as Ms. Garvie would have been the Perfect Jane!

Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle’s Pride and Prejudice, Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones Persuasion, Felicity Jones and JJ Feild’s Northanger Abbey and Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant’s Sense and Sensibility. Unfortunately Colin Firth was just SO dreamy as Mr Darcy that Matthew Macfadyen couldn’t live up to that role for me. I also watched the latest film adaptation of Emma and I simply could not bring myself to finish it. I wasn’t impressed by it at all and much prefer the Mark Strong and Kate Beckinsale variant. Theo James in Sanditon, LOVE!

The way the film chopped to bits the last scene drives me mad they needed to have kept the orginal narrative the whole walk scene with Jane and darcy (colin) is just beautiful imo. Persuasion should be higher the letter scene in that is just beautiful also

I just can't agree with you on the 2020 Emma or the BBC P&P, sorry. I understand your opinions, but honestly I think those two were cast incredibly well. That P&P is truest to the book and I felt the emotion was played really well. I think some people were disappointed by not seeing as much affection between couples, but you just wouldn't have behaved like that in the Regency era. Also I find the other characters like Mr Collins, Mrs Bennet, Mr Bennett and Mrs Gardener hilarious.
As for Emma 2020 I think it's great to see a protagonist that you actually question. She doesn't appear perfect and always correct, she is often clearly in the wrong and dislikable, but that makes her relationship with Me Knightly and attempts to make up for her behaviour even more endearing :)

How did you not like the Lizzie Bennet Diaries?!!! I loved the way it was shot and the cast completely blew my mind for an early TH-cam show. It was suspenseful waiting week by week to see what happened even though we all already knew. And the wait to see everyone was the best part! The minute we were given Bing Lee and wickham and By the Lord Darcy. It was soooo much fun! 😞

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I really don't like Pride&Prejudice 2005. Too many things different from the book, also
Matthew Macfadyen wasn't totally convincing as Mr. Darcy to me. The 1995 tv show is a much better adaptation, the cast is on point and the attention to details is beautiful. I also like the new Emma, even though the dynamics between certain characters aren't totally true to the ones in the book.

I was studying abroad in London in 2014 and only could make it for 1 day but it was incredible getting dressed up and parading around the city with everyone else all in costume. The best part of the day was randomly meeting Adrian Lukis and getting a photo with him while I was in costume 😭 (BBC P&P Mr. Wickham). Apparently he’s a patron of the festival haha I am hoping to go again in 2021 but for the full 10 days with my mom. Maybe I’ll see you there! ☺️ (but girl BBC P&P is god tier and I have read P&P)

Warning: if you love the 2005 P&P then do not read this comment, it's just me shitting on it continually.
I know so many people who love this movie, what I don't know is WHYYYYYYYYYYYY?! It's not a good adaptation, it completely misunderstands what the novel is and what's great about it. It felt like instead of actually reading P&P Joe Wright just read a synopsis and thought "OK so it's your basic haters to lovers story". NO! It's so much more than that: it's an analysis and deconstruction of economic and social structure; class prejudice; gender relations, and an exploration of love and the different types of love people experience and what makes a good relationship. None of that translates into the movie: it's just a basic love story.
The movie also fundamentally misunderstood the characters. The writers portrayed Darcy as a socially awkward introvert, but his problem isn't that he's too shy to talk to people; it's that he considers them beneath him. Although he still behaves with common decency to everyone, he judges people based on social class. Lizzie is also made too perfect. She might have razor sharp wits but she makes snap judgements about people and sticks to them even when provided evidence to the contrary and her judgement is guided by how people behave to her and the people she cares about. You could almost say that the most significant flaws in both of these characters is pride and prejudice. IT'S LITERALLY THERE IN THE FUCKING TITLE!
On a more shallow level, it just looks bad. It's almost like the costume designers thought "period piece" and just made a bunch of floaty shirts and floor length dresses to indulge the fantasies of tween girls, which is an insult to tween girls. Historical accuracy goes completely out the window; lizzie's wearing wellies, Caroline's in a spaghetti strap dress, and everyone looks like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards.
The only thing I can honestly say I like is the cast. Keira and Matthew actually have quite a compelling dynamic, Tom Hollander's Mr Collins is iconic, and Judi Dench couldn't be bad in anything if she tried. Too bad these brilliant actors had to put up with such shitty writing.
Well. Except for "what excellent boiled potatoes". That will never not be funny.

Okay.... your number 1 choice makes it SO clear that we do not have the same tastes in Jane Austen adaptations, like AT ALL 😂🤣😂
Okay, I don't exactly HATE it, but yeah... when you have the option of the, in my view, FAR superior 1995 series I just never feel like settling for the movie version. To be fair, the same is true of Sense and Sensibility, even if Allan Rickman and his voice HAS caused me to see that movie WAY more than I will ever watch the Pride and Prejudice movie. I tend to prefer the mini series as they can go far more into the story, and don't have to cut too much, which gives you a more full experience of the story.

A couple more you might want to include is the Kate Becksindale Emma from the mid 1990s. There was a Northanger Abbey from the late 1980s with reasonably decent production values. The best Mansfield Park is from the 1980s. The production values aren't the greatest, but it is truer to the novel than the others. You might also want to watch the 1980s Pride and Prejudice with Elizabeth Garvie.

I am not going to rank all the adaptions right now, as I'd really need to think about it, but I will try a top 5:
    1)Pride and Prejudice 2005
    2)Emma 2009
    3)Sense and Sensibility 2008
    4)Pride and Prejudice 1995
5)Northanger Abbey(kind of weird for top 5, but I really like NA and there's so few adaptions of it and I really liked the 2007 movie) I think this tale is type for a dramatic film version spiced up a bit to make it more weighty - there's plenty in the story to work with.
OKaay, that was hard. 6 would be Emma 2020 or 1995 Sense and Sensibility.

I really love the new Emma movie and i like that it is really comedic because it fits the book. It's actually really comedic. It's like satire of the rich people of the time that wanted to teach them that their ways are not always so great. I also really love Emma, it's my favourite book. Maybe it's also because i didnt like the actor that plays emma in the 1996 movie. But honestly they are all solid movies and people should watch them all in quarantine:) also i really like that :)
