Gotta say that 2 player is defnitely competitive simulatenous multiplayer mode here, since both players's marbles can colide to each another (as seen when one marble bumps the other to fall and shatter in 0:34). First player to reach goal gets bonus points and extra time. Kind of sad that most of the ports of Marble Madness are flawed in one way or another, mostly relatable to the quality, sound, and especially the game controls. (And some of those ports are 1 player only, or do not have simulatenous 2 players) Also, notice that the game can actually handle a player's remaining time over 99 seconds, but it only starts ticking down once there are actually less than 99 seconds ledt

Definitely ahead of its time. I remember always being wowed by this game in the arcades in 1986 and finally got a near equivalent home version on the Amiga in 1988, showing off its graphic glory back in the day.
This was Atari's first game using a Motorola 68000, same chip used in the original Macintosh. This chip is a whole lot easier to program than an Intel 8086, and lent itself to graphics.
You lose 5 seconds off your clock if the game has to "catch you up." You can actually see it happen once at 2:16. I'm sure this has been keeping you awake for the last five months!

"With MAME4droid (0.139u1) you can press coin + start access service mode in game ... config "1 coin 1 player /1 coin 2 player ... set mono or stereo sound output ... 50000 pts or 100000 pts reward you player extra live etc" I can't say for sure whether or not that works, because I never used MAME on Android. If you know how to bring up the menu to set the controls for a specific game, you can probably remap the service menu key to something else.

I don't know how it works on the PS2, but here, you need to add at least 2 credits, and then press player 2's start button.

I have this on IPad, but it is different. One thing is that there is arena mode, but to get it, you find secret locks in stages you play.
